So our idling about came to an abrupt halt as we had to go to work. We were collected by taxi, which was just as well as the addresses are not easy to find and are usually part of a huge building. Finding the right entrance is a challenge. We got there early and were taken for a coffee in Starbucks, which was a nice start. We walked in like members of the Royal family, the staff all clapped. Oh dear! But the little children were the cutest ever and so polite. Lunch was a takeaway, Chinese food, but not as WE know it. Really interesting although we weren’t too hungry and declined dinner at the end of the day due to exhaustion and needing some down time. The worst part of the experience is the ... read more

Yesterday my connecting flight to Zhengzhou on Air China was disappointingly over an hour late departing, meaning that I finally arrived at the hotel at 1am after 27 hours of travelling and not being sure I was going to love it here. It was easy at Zhengzhou airport. The taxi rank was well organised. I showed the queue guy the hotel address in Chinese and he gave me a meaningless bit of paper. The taxi driver grunted at it and put something into his phone and off we went into the pitch black, no landmarks at all. I didn’t have a clue how long it would take except that Leslie, my buddy, had messaged to say his fare was 72RMB. I asked for a receipt and the driver flapped his hand at the meter. By this ... read more

Once again, I was surprised to wake up hangover free. We headed out for some breakfast and decided to check out the town next to Nanjiecun. We walked through the tunnel in the city wall, Choayangmen Gate. Inside the tunnels, there were some great sculpted murals on the walls of the tunnels. I enjoyed looking at those and it was another reminder that Nanjiecun is different to the rest of China. Through the other side of the tunnel, the contrast to Nanjiecun was quite stark. While Nanjiecun is quite stark and utilitarian with its red trimmed white building, this street in Linying County was full of traditional looking Chinese architecture and was really pretty. There were quite a few restaurants on the street and we just headed into one for breakfast. I had reganmian (hot dry ... read more

Despite the large amounts of beer consumed the evening before, I woke up hangover free. We headed to a nearby noodle shop for breakfast. The food must have been passable, but I can't remember what I had so definitely not amazing. I was feeling a bit dehydrated, so the quest to get some water started when we left the shop. We found a small convenience store on one of the backstreets and stocked up for our journey. Back at the hotel, we packed up, checked out, and ordered a Didi to take us to Nanjiecun. The journey took about 40 minutes and after we left the city, we were just on a straight road through the countryside. We arrived in Nanjiecun, and our first stop wad the hotel in town. We had been unable to make ... read more

For breakfast we headed back to the noodle shop. I decided to try the spicy beef noodles today. They were yum. I really liked both kinds of noodles, I had here, but each bowl left me dripping in sweat. Oh to have Asian genes and to not sweat. We headed back to the guesthouse as the owner had offered to drive us to the place we wanted to visit as it was a little outside of town and it saved the faff of using public transportation or calling a cab. The guesthouse owner is an absolute legend, so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much bother for him. The drive to Di Shui (Water Dripping) Cave was pretty quick, only about 10-15 minutes. After paying our entrance fees, we decided to take the shuttle to the ... read more

So this is not my last Blog enrty but……. I am actually home, back in the US and I still have to tell you all about my visit to Kaifeng, my finals at school (which I passed by the way) and then Shanghai. I will do my best to recount everything but it might take several blog entries to do it. I am so bad at blogging, I commend all those bloggers out there who love doing this. I barely do Facebook, so keeping up with this blog was hard so I am deeply sorry to everyone who was following my adventure to China. Ok now for Kaifeng, this city used to be the capital during the Song dynasty. Let me tell you it was an amazing city. The song dynasty was view as the riches ... read more

Ok, sooooooo I made some mistakes on my last post. SEEE I’m not very good at this L So, on Friday we went to the museum and the mall, Saturday is when we went to Luoyang(洛阳) where the shaolin temple and temple of heaven where located. OK Now that I got that back in order, not I can talk about Karaoke and some other stuff….. I’m a little behind. On Sunday, we gathered as many of us (UTA students and tutors) and headed to karaoke, except they call it KTV here in China. All together it was like 12 of us in the room, good thing the room was big if not we would have not fit at all. It was so much fun, I of course was the first one to sing and not because ... read more

So, before I start talking about the Saturday trip to the shaolin temple, I need to apologies. I am not a great writer and I am so sorry for everyone reading all my blogs, trust me I am pretty awesome in person but pretty awful at writing. Ok now that, that’s out of the way…… on Friday everyone met after class to follow our tour guide/guy in charge of our excursion to a museum. Now that was interesting because we took two buses to get there and let me tell you when I mean everyone, I mean everyone it was like 20 people all together. We were stared at the whole time and people wanted to take pictures with us. I still find that really strange, in the US we are all different but here everyone ... read more
