WE DECIDED TO COME TO SANYA BECAUSE OF ALL THE GREAT THINGS THE INTERNET SHOWS YOU. AFTER ALREADY BEING IN CHINA FOR OVER A YEAR I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT IT WAS ALL FAKE! THATS RIGHT! FAKE!! CHINESE PEOPLE REALLY LOVE TO USE PHOTOSHOP ALOT! WE ARRIVED IN SANYA AT THE AIRPORT FROM CHENGDU AT 3AM AND IT WAS HOT, SO AT FIRST WE WERE HAPPY AND KNEW THAT WE MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE....OUR OTHER CHOICE WAS THAILAND AND CAMBODIA. WE ALREADY PAID THE 2 MONTHS FOR A PLACE IN DADONGHAI. FIRST OF ALL LET ME TELL YOU THAT SANYA BAY IS DIRTY WATER AND THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO BEACH UNLESS YOU GO A FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD THEN IT DOES GET A LITTLE BETTER, BUT IF YOU ARE A FIRT TIMER HERE AND U ... read more

The first semester is over, and the first week of our month of Chinese New Year holiday is over. And what a week it was... We left the cold weather in Wuhan last Sunday and headed due south to Hainan province and the most southern city in China, Sanya. It is only a two hour flight from here but a twenty degree Celsius increase in temperature, which is what we were looking for! Being as disorganized as ever, I booked the flight and the "hostel" online at the last minute so did not really have any idea what to expect when we arrived. We would have loved to have spent the whole month travelling but due to our last three summers of cross-country travelling and the fact that we are moving to another apartment in a ... read more

This November, HKIS had its PEAK trips. I can't remember what PEAK stands for, but it's a week when the school closes down and all the kids are off on trips around China. Sixth graders all do the same trip - this year, to Beijing and Xian. Eighth graders go on adventure trips in pretty large groups. And seventh graders have the best trips of all - they get to choose four of the trips on offer and get placed in one of those four. the trips are either hiking, biking or community-service oriented. This year, I went with the trip to Hainan Island, an island off the eastern coast of Vietnam. We cycled 100 k.m. over four days - which, really isn't all that much for real cyclists, but was perfect for me. Here are ... read more

Aside from people we saw along the way, part of our trip involved a service component. We visited a local school and taught them how to play hopscotch and 4-square. They sent a kid to climb a palm tree and throw down some coconuts, which they then cut open for us to feast on the juice and coconut flesh. We also met up with the employees and students of a school for students with disabilities. We hung out at the beach together, and it was beautiful to see our kids trying to help these kids out. ... read more

We biked along rice paddies and rolling hills. The countryside was gorgeous, and to be honest, the kids were great! They cycled without any complaints. And we didn't have any accidents. We were incredibly lucky with the group of students we were assigned.... read more

The food wasn't as good as I expected. I guess I had quite high standards because the food on my previous PEAK trip was soooo delicious! This time there was a lot of meat and seafood, and the vegetarian food was often an oily omelet. That's alright... I didn't starve. The fruit was gorgeous and so was the fresh coconut! Our kids' favorite day was when we had a picnic lunch of cold cuts, peanut butter, white bread, chips and Oreo cookies. The first - and only - non-Chinese meal of the trip.... read more

The last 5 days in Sanya were rainy and cloudy so we decided to give the Nantian Hot Springs another go. We went to the same hostel to see if anyone else posted interest in going as a group to the hot springs. Thankfully, we met a couple Agnus (from Poland) and Thomas (from Germany) who joined us with Cat. Also Mark mentioned that his wife had made a sweet deal with a taxi driver to drive 5 people to the Nantian Hot Springs for 300 RMB including entrance fee and a ride back. SO we all thought it was a good idea to negotiate with the taxi drivers first and see if we can get a better price than going with the hostel package. Well it took us an hour to negotiate 600 RBM for ... read more

The weather in Sanya was not the best for sun-tanning at the beach so we made plans with Mark who we had met earlier and Cat who we met at the Christmas party to go to Wuzhishan. Wuzhishan itself is a renamed city in the interior of the island about an hour and a half by bus from Sanya. The area is famous for Wuzhishan (or "Five Fingered Mountain") which is in a park not far away. We weren't sure exactly what we were going to do up there but Mark had met an English teacher, Alex from London, who we had plans to meet up with. Wuzhishan the town is small as far as cities goes but is interesting enough for a visit. The centre of the city hugs a part of a river that ... read more
