We have been told that Hainan Island is the “Hawaii of China.” I have never been to Hawaii but based on the pictures I would have to say it is pretty darn close. We stayed at the Sanya Marriott Resort. It was a great recommendation from several friends. Our week pretty much consisted of laying on the beach or by the pool and ordering lunch. After learning to live in an urban setting with its noise, traffic, and general busyness, we were very content to lie around and swim occasionally. Our 2nd or 3rd day there, we went for a walk to see the resort area. There is a portion of the beach that is a favorite for Chinese tourists. Their big thing is to buy matching Hawaiian type shirts and shorts. In some cases there ... read more

SANYA ISLAND, CHINA Sanya Island is located in the South China Sea. We stayed at a lovely resort on a beautiful beach, with very few tourists. Our pictures are from another beach we visited for a couple of hours…many different, unusual sights… and very hot, yet many people were fully dressed… The most fascinating… People, yes young children too, lined up for a short boat trip to “see the sea” from a glass bottomed boat offshore. Donned, for this precarious trip, with wetsuits to keep dry and mouth guards to help keep their teeth from breaking… A week earlier, a small typhoon hit the area. The waves were big but that didn’t stop them! Men, fully clothed, helped guide the boats in the right direction time after time… We sat there and watched in awe… Often ... read more

Wow, I think this may be the most uncharacteristic thing I've ever done. When we were looking at a calendar and planning different trips for different weekends, it sounded like an incredible idea to go to the place in China most similar to our Hawaii, and spend an extended weekend right before finals relaxing/having the best time. And in reality, still an incredible idea. I just can't get over how well the whole weekend worked out. We planned to leave Wednesday night and miss class on Thursday, and booked a really late flight home Sunday night (as in, I actually got back to my apartment at 3am Monday morning), so that we'd have a full 4 days on the beach. I even turned it into a full 5 day vacation, since I took a mental health ... read more

It's been a while since I've had a chance to update so there's lots to say. From Beijing we flew to Guangzhou in Guangdong province. Guangzhou felt like being dropped into paradise after Beijing.... it was sunny and warm and pretty and not insanely crowded. We are travelling with two of Caroline's students: Yang Yang who's from Inner Mongolia and Xiao Sheng who's family we have been staying with in Guangdong. Their english is pretty good and they're both super nice and so eager to show us everything and make everything wonderful. In Guangzhou we stayed with Xiao Sheng's aunt and uncle who actually had a new apartment that wasn't being used yet for us to stay in so the four of us had our own place which was really nice. We spent our days wandering ... read more

I'd forgotten how much I love the ocean. I've been in Sanya, Hainan province for the last 5 days, doing a whole lot of nothing in particular. Exploring. Taking photographs. Drinking coconut milk. Eating fresh fruit. Bartering for pearls. Laying on the beach. Shell hunting. Getting lost. Went diving on Wednesday, which was fantastic. The coral was amazing. We saw sea feathers, huge sea stars, jelly fish, a decent sized lion fish (they catch/eat all of the big fish here), and some other beautiful fish. I found nemo. Actually, he found me. Swam right up into my face. Snuck into Yalong Bay through a 5-star hotel to avoid paying the 60 kuai entrance fee (who wants to pay to use the beach?). 7 km of white sand and turquoise waters. Paradise. Spent a day getting lost ... read more
