Nanning turned out to be my first stop in China. It was also the first time I became nervous since arriving in Asia. I had purchased a lonely planet that was a couple years old thinking it wouldn't of changed that much. To my surprise the hostel that I thought I was going to was now a hotel. I managed to find an internet cafe to find the address of another hostel but they wouldn't take US dollars. That's all I had and it was getting late and nobody would exchange it over to Yuen for me. Luckily for me there was women in the internet cafe who had some spare cash and paid for my time. I went out to find my hostel and to my surprise I ended up getting so lost and by ... read more

Hi all, Another brief note to say we're now spending our final night in China in the town of Nanning which is near the Vietnam border. From Hong Kong we got the train to Guangzhou, where we stayed one night, and then yesterday we took a 13 hour (!) train journey to Nanning. Our first impressions of China were not great, as compared to Hong Kong, Guangzhou was much dirtier and polluted with a lingering smog which meant you couldn't see more than about 50 metres. All of a sudden there were no English speaking people, no English translations and no other English/Western people apart from us! So we left Guangzhou pretty quickly, and thankfully Nanning is a much cleaner, friendlier place, full of trees and green (ish) avenues. Although everyone still stares at us as ... read more

... read more

... read more

Day 35 Today was spent largely on the bus from Yangshuo to Nanning, the city nearest the Vietnamese border crossing. The journey was about 7 hours altogether but at least the coach was nice, with big leather seats and air con. As we left Yangshuo at 9am we were pretty hungry when we finally pulled into the service station at 1pm and as the driver said we had 20 mins (as far as we understood for he was speaking Chinese) we rushed off to get some pot noodles. However thankfully Joe noticed 10 mins later a frantic bus driver waving for us to get back on the bus. Apparently the break was only 10 mins after all so ran back to the bus and spent the rest of the journey trying to slurp our noodles without ... read more

In February, I bought a book. “Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos”. During the whole semester, it has been fighting for place in between of the fat, uninspiring Chinese grammar books. The original plan was to make use of this book in March. But somehow, I felt so happy about being back in China after my work-holiday in Norway - why go anywhere? I dislike tropical landscapes. Or maybe not really dislike. But I find them less intriguing than the vast steppes of Siberia, the crisp, shivering air in the Central Asian mountain ranges, the calm softness of the Mongolian grasslands, the dense, cool taiga or the slim, gracious birches in Russia; Silence. Melancholy. The introversy of the landscape. That’s my thing. So what am I going to Cambodia and Laos for? Mindwork: From procrastination to action ... read more

After my brief day trip to Beihai on the Gulf of Tonkin, I bussed back to Nanning and grabbed a taxi into the city. The drivers at the bus depot are not so picky and greedy as those at the airport and it was easy to find one that didn't mind the casual drive into the ' old city ' on the metered rate. As we drove through the new section, I remembered my drive in the previous night and my mind went back to Chongqing and the lights on the buildings. It was such a wonderful sight to see the buildings of Nanning lit up in a similar way and with the cleaner air, there was not that ghostly aspect to the glimmer of the buildings. I videoed happily as it was still a novelty ... read more

As I move on from Chongqing to Nanning, I recall what I said of Chengdu...that it absorbed me and excepted me regardless of my place of origin and my language. Chongqing was not so kind...I had to try to become one of it's sons....I ordered seafood dumplings ( being a ' seafood/fish only/vegetarian ' type of an eater ) and I repeated at least five times ... " seafood.." reply.. ' yes ' ... " seafood.. " ' yes ' ... yet in my very first taste, there was the distinct taste, smell and texture of pork. After years and years of not eating that type of meat, I was ill for the first time in my trip. It was the first time I took medicine to make it stop...not even the ' hell-fire ' hot ... read more
