Day 148 We awoke a little later than expected but still in plenty of time to catch the flight. We packed our bags and made our way to Clark airport which is a long way outside the city and finally made it to our flight which was going to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo so we could see some orangutans and go diving in a place called Siadan. We met some people in the airport that were also in our hostel so we talked to them before the plane and spent some of our remaining pesos buying donuts and coffee before [View Full Entry]

Thailand 3 - Elephants Day 128 We were up early again to catch our flight to Chiang Mai in Thailand. We succesfully navagated the KL subway system and caught the shuttle bus to the airport which was well over an hour outside of the city. Once we landed in Chiang Mai we head straight for the bus terminal so we could catch a bus to Lampang – the closest city to the Elephant Conservation sanctuary. We booked tickets on the 3pm bus so we had time to get some lunch first, then realisd how daft we'd been as Thai time is [View Full Entry]

Thailand 2 Day 90 Today was another long day on the buses as we were travelling back to Bangkok and unfortunately Joe was feeling very poorly. It seems the blue cheese on his burger last night was probably the main culprit of his food poisoning. Border crossing days aren't fun at the best of time s but this one involved a lot of queuing, about 4 different minibus changes and lots of hanging around – not really what we needed but thankfully we made it to Bangkok for around 5pm. We used the opportunity to have an early night and to [View Full Entry]

Malaysia 1 Day 120 After disembarking the night ferry about 5am we had to sit in a cafe and wait until the minibus that would take us down south turned up at 6.30am. We then travelled down to one of the last towns before the border crossing, Satun. We got lucky here as one of the thai passengers wanted to be dropped off at the ferry port that we needed (but wouldn't have known how to ask for) so we jumped off here and saved ourselves the cost of a taxi. The next ferry to Langkawi was at 3pm and so [View Full Entry]

Malaysia 2 Day 131 After doing a little shopping & book swapping in the morning we were back at the airport to catch our flight back to Kuala Lumpur. Unfortunately Joe's baggage was over the airlines allowance so he had to throw away his mahout suit in the airport and ended up wearing 2 pairs of shorts on the flight. When we arrived back in KL we went back to the same hostel but were split into different dorm rooms as the mixed dorm only had 1 available bed left. We caught up on some admin and went out for some [View Full Entry]

Philippines Day 135 We had to get up before 4am in order to head to the airport for our manila flight so we were both feeling pretty tired. The flight itself was fine and we landed about 11am but as we had flown to a cheap out of town airport we then had a 2 hour bus transfer to the city of manila. We were also really annoyed that the bus cost $8 each as we both thought this was very expensive for Asia but as the airport was in the middle of nowhere there was not enough competition to drive [View Full Entry]

Day 75 We had an early 8am start as we were hoping to make it to our Cambodian destination of Ban Lung, in the north east, by mid-afternoon: how wrong we were! After navigating the perilous task of climbing over numerous boats and tiny wooden planks, whilst wearing our big backpacks, to get out at the docks we then drove to the Laos – Cambodia border. We thought we'd managed it pretty well when the Cambodian officials said Joe hadn't got the right stamp in his passport and had to go back to Laos and to the end of the queue [View Full Entry]

Day 65 We awoke unnecessarily early the next morning as the minibus to the border actually didn't leave the guesthouse till 9:30am, an hour after we'd been told. There was a mad scramble for everyone to buy soft pillows to sit on, as the boat is notoriously uncomfy, but thankfully they managed to find enough for everybody in the end. Crossing the Thai-Laos border was a simple matter of crossing from a village on one side of the river, to a smaller village on the other side. We had to get our visa and show our passports at the specified huts [View Full Entry]

Day 57 We woke up knowing that we had to fly to bangkok today so there was not much time to do anything. We nipped out and brought some guidebooks to Laos and Cambodia because we already had one for Thailand and these would help us plan our trip. Then we met Nigel again (our friend from Halng bay) and we had a drink with him and relaxed at a bar for a while before we had to get a taxi to the airport. When we got to the airport we checked in with plenty of time and relaxed for a [View Full Entry]

Day 35 Today was spent largely on the bus from Yangshuo to Nanning, the city nearest the Vietnamese border crossing. The journey was about 7 hours altogether but at least the coach was nice, with big leather seats and air con. As we left Yangshuo at 9am we were pretty hungry when we finally pulled into the service station at 1pm and as the driver said we had 20 mins (as far as we understood for he was speaking Chinese) we rushed off to get some pot noodles. However thankfully Joe noticed 10 mins later a frantic bus driver waving for [View Full Entry]
