Ok, bear with me a second, because this might get slightly confusing if you are not paying attention/have had a glass or two of wine/or have a short attent.... As I write this, on Thursday 5th May at 9pm, we are back in China. In a city called Nanning to be precise. Never heard of it? Me neither, but 6.5 million people call it home, making it fractionally smaller than London in terms of population. For 24 hours only, the population has increased by two slightly tired looking Westerners. Judging by the way people were looking at us in the city centre earlier, Westerners are something of a rarity here. Nanning lies near the Vietnamese border, a 10-hour bus ride from Hong Kong and a 10-hour bus ride from Hanoi, our next destination. The reason we ... read more

Hi again!! I finaly sat down to actualy write some of the entries now. So There will be a few! We arrived in Nanning by plane, it was a rather small airport 40 minutes outside the city. We went outside to find a bus or taxi. Again we had som trouble commuicating with the locals. But we met a guy who translated for us and got a cab which drove us in to the city and pointed frantictly in through some trees. We searched the area for half an hour until we met someone who actualy knew where the hostel was. The Nanning City Hoste is more a guesthouse, realy cool. It is owned by an american called Weston, who is very helpfull and a cool guy. It is a "small" town. Only about 2 million. ... read more

A friend once informed me, after I ordered a pint of tap water in a bar, that I was the tightest person he knew when it came to splashing my cash. My arguments that I was just more careful with my spending fell on deaf ears. In high school I attempted the ‘bed head’ hairstyle several years before it came to prominence. Again friends questioned my behaviour, believing I looked not too dissimilar to a wet toilet brush. There have been many times in life when I feel I’ve been misjudged. Always priding myself on my positive attitude and the ability to look on the bright side of life, it came as a shock when a work colleague recently suggested I was negative and depressing to be around. I wasn’t being negative, just telling the truth ... read more

While researching train information from China to Vietnam we found very little info so I wanted to share our recent experience. We took the T8701 train from Nanning, China to Hanoi, Vietnam departing at 6:45pm and arriving in Hanoi at 5:45am(4:45am Hanoi time). Cost for 2 people in a soft sleeper(4 people in a berth) 456RMB=$66.76 There was confusion as when we got on the train half of the train is green(China side) and the other half red(Vietnam side). Anyone getting off the train in China sat in the green side and those of us traveling on to Vietnam were in the red cars. You must depart the train with all your luggage when exiting China at Ping Xiang station 10:11pm, board back onto the train once cleared customs. Then again do the same thing for ... read more

On the train I was the first in the cabin. I opened cookies I brought for the ride and just as I did so a Chinese man came in, I offered him a cookie and within minutes we each put all the snacks we had on the table so we had ourselves a picnic. Minutes later a middle ages man came in as well. I gestured to him to help himself, he was grateful for this and shortly after we were engrossed in conversation. The younger man was a 19 year old high school graduate who spoke some English and thankfully had a translator in his phone so he could show me a word and I could fill in the blanks. The elder man would ask a question which would then be relayed to me and ... read more

At 10am Jacky arrived at the hotel as promised. Our first stop would be his place of work. He’d told his colleagues about a Scotsman he met and they were keen to meet me, so much so that a few of them turned up with cameras to take their pictures with me. I was game and they were all friendly so no harm no foul. I wasn’t made to feel like a circus animal. We met one of Jacky’s friends and our party of 3 headed across the plaza to the Wall Mart where I bought the ingredients for lunch, we got the bus to Jacky’s flat where he had me show him some of many photos from around his country. This took longer than planned so we decided to forego the museum visit. As I ... read more

For the first time in my trip I had knew absolutely nothing about the city including where to stay so when I arrived in Nanning I decided to consult the Lonely Planet someone gave me earlier on my trip and tried to find the cheapest accommodation mentioned. As I trudged through the carrying two carrier bags of food I hadn’t touched on the previous nights journey a Chinese man who introduced himself as Jacky came to my aid (his chosen English name is Jacky but his real name was Hui-Hui). Jacky led me to the hotel where I got a single room including toilet and shower for the second time since I left home. while we walked to the hotel I was hesitant because the Chinese are cunning as foxes, some will give directions and ask ... read more

Our hostel in Nanning was everything that China had appeared to be to us so far: modern, clean and mildly friendly. Food had suddenly become an issue as for starters I'm vego, but also reading a menu was impossible unless is was in English (which was rare). The first night I ordered “Fried Vegetables Just” and got a huge plate of wilted spinach, with boiled rice of course. The second night we went to a vegetarian restaurant where I ordered “Seasonal Stir-fry Vegetables”, and again got a plate of wilted spinach. Nick tucked into some crispy skin “chicken” that I was hesitant about and said it was pretty good. Phoebe was rather miffed about not getting the real deal, as Chinese seem to be very enthusiastic about their fake meat. A specialty here is 'Dog Hotpot', ... read more
