While researching train information from China to Vietnam we found very little info so I wanted to share our recent experience.

We took the T8701 train from Nanning, China to Hanoi, Vietnam departing at 6:45pm and arriving in Hanoi at 5:45am(4:45am Hanoi time). Cost for 2 people in a soft sleeper(4 people in a berth) 456RMB=$66.76

There was confusion as when we got on the train half of the train is green(China side) and the other half red(Vietnam side). Anyone getting off the train in China sat in the green side and those of us traveling on to Vietnam were in the red cars.

You must depart the train with all your luggage when exiting China at Ping Xiang station 10:11pm, board back onto the train once cleared customs. Then again do the same thing for entering Vietnam at Dongdang station at 12:22am.

There was less than 30 people traveling onto Vietnam and the tickets we bought the day of when arriving in Nanning. The train left on time from Nanning and arrived 1 minute early into Hanoi. This was a first as our 2 prior experiences of traveling by train in China was they were always late.
