... read more

Oh...what a stupid title I have named...What I mean is "Da hong deng long gao gao gua". Blame the translation, not me~~ Beijing as a capital city of China, it has a strong cultural vibe that my hometown, the southern China can not provide. My original plan was to stay here for a month and just to take a rest and learn the basic theory about Guzeng, the Chinese Zither. But I ended up being amazed by its people and its depth of history. After a month of staying, life here becomes normal, it becomes a part of me. We talk about China, all aspects of China. But China is such a vast sea that you can only dive to a certain depth. Much more going on down there that we are unable to see, unable ... read more

He who has not climbed the Great Wall is not a true man. - Mao Zedong Yesterday, Robbie became a true man. __________________________________________________________________ He who wins at cribbage on the Great Wall is the almighty cribbage champion FOREVER! - Robb Modica Yesterday, Sarah became the almighty cribbage champion. _________________________________________________________________ It was obviously a big day for both of us yesterday. We headed out of Beijing in the morning and drove two hours northeast of the city to get to a section of the Great Wall called Mutianyu. This section of the wall is supposedly a little less commercial and offers a more "authentic" experience of the Wall -- (though most of the people in our tour group took the cable car to the top - sigh -). We, however, decided to climb to the top, and ... read more

This weekend 11 of us took an adventurous roadtrip to the grasslands north of Beijing. Five of us were students from the same program while the rest were Chinese friends and co-workers of one of my group members. It was a great time had by all, as we were able to escape the city life and see the more rural side of China. We left around seven on Saturday morning to get on a Greyhound type bus in Beijing. The bus ride lasted about three and a half hours, until the bus apparently ran into a van and we all had to get off the bus. Fortunately we were in a good sized town and were able to rent a driver (and his wife and little daughter) to take us to our destination in a crowded ... read more

Hello, I am in Beijing now, sleeping fine and learning lots of interesting things--like how women have to pee in a hole in the ground and public bathrooms don't provide toilet paper (I thought that opening would spice things up a bit). We climbed the Great Wall today, which was quite interesting...tons and tons of people there. I can't upload a photo yet b/c I am on a public computer...sorry. Tonight we went to a traditional Chineese dinner and amongst other more edible things, had frog, chicken feet, soft bones, and pork skins in jelly (I didn't eat any of them but Peter B did--I think he took a liking to the feet!)...We also saw three boys who were training in martial arts and they were like the matrix, spinning and kicking in the air, they ... read more

Greetings from Beijing! Things have been a whirlwind since we arrived on Saturday afternoon. We found our hotel (amazing race style) and met up with our group on Saturday night for a fantastic roast duck dinner which cost us all of $12....together! Sunday we took a bus to the Great Wall (a - maze - ing) and was able to act out a famous Chinese saying - "The one who wins at cribbage is champion forever" (robbie lost). Afterward, we saw an arcobat show and witnessed a fantastic flag lowering ceremony in Tianaimen Square. Tomorrow we spend most of the day at the Forbidden City and around Beijing before taking the overnight train for Xi'an where hopefully computers will be a bit more updated we are currently typing this on a 1990 style keyboard with an ... read more

Say Good-bye to JB's eloquent descriptions and accurate imagery, not to mention all the BIG WORDS! I'm back in charge, with true blogging enthusiasm and less skill. Beijing offers some of the most famous historical sites - The Great Wall, The Ming Tombs, The Forbidden City, The Summer Palace and Tiennamen Square - of which we have been to see all. As could be expected, the visiting crowds were enormous - and this was not peak season. Large tour groups (Asian, European, North American), pushy vendors, vacationing Chinese families, guides with microphones, back packers and a few beggars present an awesome spectacle in themselves. The pictures we took of The Great Wall are as memorable for the mass of coloured umbrellas filling the width and length of the wall as the grandeur of the Great Wall ... read more

We had class today, then went to dinner, and later attempted to shop. Unfortunately we took the advice of one of the guys as to where we should go shopping and spent the evening traveling across the city, finally ending up not finding a market at which to shop. Instead he took us to an area that had just a couple of overpriced botiques. We have become accustomed to the massive markets that encourage bargaining and are filled with all kinds of knock-offs. These markets are the types of places where you can get the good deals. Not much else happened today, except that I did finish "The Alchemist". I think it is a well written story, and very short and easy to read if you want something light with which to relax. It is mainly ... read more

Well, the reason we spent so much time docked in Hong Kong (5 days) was because there were multiple SAS trips traveling to mainland China. These were all “presale trips”, trips that you had to sign up for before the ship left back in june because they are all overnight trips. I didn’t sign up because all the China ones were just about, or over, $1000. And I just thought that was a little much. However, about a week or two before Hong Kong…I think I was in Singapore at the time, I got extremely upset that I wouldn’t be traveling to mainland China. How could I come this far and NOT see the Great Wall? I just thought it would be something I would regret forever. So I thought about it and thought about it, ... read more
