Yesterday morning the move from the Chengdu hotel to the airport was a little rough as I wasn't feeling that well and had developed a mild fever. We were also over-weight at the airport check-in. On top of that, because we were late for various reasons I didn't get a good seat assignment. However on the plane the gods took mercy and I was moved to an exit row center seat with a big Chinese guy on one side and an average one on the other. I slept through the flight and shook the fever by the time we landed in Beijing two hours later. After checking in at the hotel we had something to drink and something to eat at the hotel cafe, then relaxed for a short while in the room prior to going ... read more

Beihai Park is behind the Palace Museum, approximately one mile west of the rear exit. It is also south of the Houhai area. I saw some tour group go here after the tour in the Palace Museum. The cost to get in the park is 5 rmb. If you want to go to the temple at the top and the city wall is 15 rmb. The lake is frozen now so is very clam and quiet. There are many lotus plants on the lake. It must be very beautiful during the early summer when they are in full bloom ... read more

This is an 800 years history street in the hutong area. It is about a mile east of the Houhai area. There are many bars and specialty shops in this street. Full of characters and uniquely decorated. The drinks are not cheap but not as pricy as Houhai, and the bars are very small in size. It is in between the Guloudajie East 鼓樓大街東 and the DiAnMen Dong 地安門東( the south entrance of Houhai major street ). If you missed the Yandai Xiejie 煙袋科街 by turning in the wrong street, most likely you will end up here. The forth annual hutong festival is 2 days event, selling a lot of arts and crafts items on the street. It really brings this street in life with all the local people and tourist alike. ... read more

After two days of nonstop stair climbing and touring we were pretty pooped and decided to take it easy on our third day. We still got up pretty early for a free service offered by our hostel: a bike tour of the city. It had been so long since I had ridden a bike that I literally could not remember the last time. Perhaps testing my pedaling skills in a city-setting like Beijing wasn’t the brightest idea, but I survived. It turns out that riding a bike is, well, like riding a bike. Our guide was an enthusiastic young man who enjoyed riding through red lights while his terrified followers tried to keep up. He swerved in and out of traffic, between buses, and through busy thoroughfares. I’m pretty sure he was just the spunky little ... read more

Houhai is newly developed old town of funky nightlife full of small bars and restaurants with different characters around the lakes. Most cafes and restaurants are individual owned not major chains. It is a great place to stroll in the summer nights or days. A little cold and windy during the autumn and winter. Day time is good also but more lively at the night time. You can have drinks, coffee or tea at many places or just enjoy the lakes or watch peoples. The price is on the pricy side; average drink may run you US$ 10. There is no direct access by subway to Houhai. The closest station may be at the Gulou 鼓樓 station exit SW “B” and walk south on Old Gulou Dajie 15 to 20 minutes. You can enjoy see all ... read more

Hey All, Decided to take things a bit easier today and went to Beihai Park (ancient imperial gardens) which is a short walk from where we are staying. It was amazing, there was loads to see and they seem to be going all out with the flowers and displays at the mo due to the 60th anniversary. The Bonsai trees are huge, when I think of the tiny one we used to have and killed, its amazing how they maintain them. There were also people chanting, dancing and playing instruments throughout the park. Seems that it is definitely a place of escape from the city. There is a massive lake in the middle, where there are boats taking people to an island in the centre and you can take boats out yourselves (we didn't since our ... read more

This morning we went to Tiannamen square where we saw virtually all Chinese tourists. Then we went to visit Forbidden city. We have already seen these places in the past except for Tuyen. In any case, the Forbidden city has been restored prior to the Summer Olympics 2008 so they also increase the price tickets now. Then we went to Jingshan park which is just across Forbidden city. Basically, it is just a park to relax and you can see the panorama of Beijing. After having lunch we went to visit Behai park where there is a white Tibetan Dagoba. It is currently very hot in Beijing over 30C and Behai park is a good location to relax since there is a large lake within this park. Anyway, we consume about 20 bottles of water just ... read more
