(Kwesi saved these pictures before we left!) It's smokey. Hard to believe we are in a giant internet cafe with a whole bunch of smokers, but that is life! We arrived yesterday afternoon. It's been hot here but not nearly as hot as I know Beijing can be! We spent part of today at the beautiful summer palace. Kwesi had a lot of fun taking pictures (although we do not have our cameras here to upload anything...) Beijing has been good so far! It raining today. Makes me wonder if they are "practicing" controlling the weather or not. We went out this morning for a quick walk around the block and managed to make it back to our room extremely wet. Good thing we brought more than just one shirt each! ;-) We are off tomorrow ... read more

Today we went swimming at Houhai since our test for tomorrow got canceled. Tons of people warned us against this, but i read an article about how this is one of the coolest experiences you can have in beijing. when we arrived at the lake after a subway ride and a mile of walking, we saw tons of locals swimming. it was an awesome experience. i highly recommend it. It was a blast and, as of right now, i feel fine. ... read more

This next week is gonna be packed so a quick bullet -style rundown of the past few days, otherwise they'd be lost in the hiatus. Rest of Thursday was us running around and forming study groups and trying to prepare for test. I also woke up about 5:30 next morning to study on my own (i just study better when i first wake up). Test was hard b/c a different teacher prepared it so the format was new. However i hope for the best. Week two test was a 90% w/B+ on the speaking. Besides test Friday was pretty chill, took a walk by myself around campus, on way back ran into Tai to told me our group was challenged to a big soccer match by some Korean exchange students in the neighboring dorm. I ran ... read more

Greetings ~ It is currently 6:00am Thursday - China time, 6:00pm Wednesday - Buckeye time. Yesterday was another busy day. For the first half, the kids were in class. We all started with a Kungfu class - and then felt it the rest of the day! It was held on their soccer field immediately after the Chinese students had their morning aerobics...there were well over 1,000 students on the field. They blast "workout" music and all of them go through an aerobics routine together. That was the first time we were here to see that. When they were done, we learned kung fu. I must say, the kids are great sports and everyone gives it a try. The kids were probably fine, but the "older" students found some muscles we forgot we had! The kids then ... read more

We arrived in China. China was great, China has chopsticks like Japan but they drive on different sides of the road. While in Beijing we went to The Great Wall Of China, we walked along it for a couple of hours. It had lots and lots of steps, I got very tired. We went on a chairlift to get up there and back. We also went to The Forbidden City and Tiananmen square, The Temple Of Heaven and we even saw Chairman Mao. He was dead. He died of old age when he was 75. In Shanghai, we visited the Oriental Pearl Tower, it had Space City in the middle. It had ET and a robot. The weather was rainy there. One day we walked along the river area called The Bund. My legs got very ... read more

Our first impression of Beijing was the new airport (only opened last week) and the sheer size of it all. We stayed in the middle of town in the Ma-or hutong, only a short distance from the Forbidden City. The hutongs are traditional narrow alley ways, and have been around for hundreds of years. Unfortunately they are rapidly being pulled down in the name of progress. They certainly are a hub of activity, and not 'westernised' in their presentation. We found our accommodation on the internet, "The Backyard Hutong" , and it came with great reviews. It certainly lived up to expectations. You entered from the hutong into a fantastic/characteristic quadrangle accomodation with four rooms for guests. Our bed was....well see the photo. Being central we did a lot of walking, and visited the local ... read more

We began our 20 days tour through China in Hong Kong. We arrived a day before our tour started and spent a night at Guodadong Guesthouse in the infamous Chungkung Mansions. Our room was ultra compact but very clean and had just enough room for a TV. The ground floor of the mansion was manic and great for people watching. There were West African businessmen in dodgy Savel Row suits, pushy Indian touts and lost and bemused backpackers searching for their digs in the maze of different blocks, stairwells and elevators. The air in Hong Kong was dirty and visibility was poor, so we skipped the obligatory visit to the peak until next time. We went exploring around Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. It was the familiar rather than the new that had us most excited ... read more

JINGSHAN PARK After Me (Renata) pre-explored this park we have both returned here. Here we saw so far the most beautiful Buddha - "Vairocana = Universal Brightness = Buddha of five directions". As we had quite lot in plan shortly we went to our next stop. BEIHAI PARK As this was our second visit to this park we knew what exactly we wanted to see and missed last time NINE DRAGON SCREEN and we have walked trough beautiful park. Next stop NEW SUMMER PALACE We had only 3hours to cover 290 hectares of park in -6 Celsius with strong freezing wind. Move, move, faster you get warmer... scenery was wonderful and as with most of these parks in Beijing, they must look amazing in summer with flowers and lake not being frozen, however the crowd of ... read more

Another intensive business week closed last night when I concluded my conference calls with Europe and North America very close to midnight local Beijing time. Though I was happy to have a few bonus hours that I could dedicate to my continuing explorations of this great city, I badly needed extra sleep this morning, so I did not leave my hotel until about 9:00 AM. Beijing had turned a lot colder (single digits In the Celsius scale) since Wednesday morning so I wore warm clothes anticipating my being outdoors during the entire daylight hours. Prince Gong’s Mansion, my first destination had been open for about one hour by the time the taxi dropped me by the entrance gate. Arriving there early had been highly recommended to me because of the popularity of the site with local ... read more
