Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Off to China
Off to China
It is July 16th and we are on our way to china ....
(Kwesi saved these pictures before we left!) It's smokey. Hard to believe we are in a giant internet cafe with a whole bunch of smokers, but that is life! We arrived yesterday afternoon. It's been hot here but not nearly as hot as I know Beijing can be! We spent part of today at the beautiful summer palace. Kwesi had a lot of fun taking pictures (although we do not have our cameras here to upload anything...) Beijing has been good so far! It raining today. Makes me wonder if they are "practicing" controlling the weather or not. We went out [View Full Entry]

Today we went swimming at Houhai since our test for tomorrow got canceled. Tons of people warned us against this, but i read an article about how this is one of the coolest experiences you can have in beijing. when we arrived at the lake after a subway ride and a mile of walking, we saw tons of locals swimming. it was an awesome experience. i highly recommend it. It was a blast and, as of right now, i feel fine. [View Full Entry]

This next week is gonna be packed so a quick bullet -style rundown of the past few days, otherwise they'd be lost in the hiatus. Rest of Thursday was us running around and forming study groups and trying to prepare for test. I also woke up about 5:30 next morning to study on my own (i just study better when i first wake up). Test was hard b/c a different teacher prepared it so the format was new. However i hope for the best. Week two test was a 90% w/B+ on the speaking. Besides test Friday was pretty chill, took [View Full Entry]

Greetings ~ It is currently 6:00am Thursday - China time, 6:00pm Wednesday - Buckeye time. Yesterday was another busy day. For the first half, the kids were in class. We all started with a Kungfu class - and then felt it the rest of the day! It was held on their soccer field immediately after the Chinese students had their morning aerobics...there were well over 1,000 students on the field. They blast "workout" music and all of them go through an aerobics routine together. That was the first time we were here to see that. When they were done, we learned [View Full Entry]

Lots of steep steps
We arrived in China. China was great, China has chopsticks like Japan but they drive on different sides of the road. While in Beijing we went to The Great Wall Of China, we walked along it for a couple of hours. It had lots and lots of steps, I got very tired. We went on a chairlift to get up there and back. We also went to The Forbidden City and Tiananmen square, The Temple Of Heaven and we even saw Chairman Mao. He was dead. He died of old age when he was 75. In Shanghai, we visited the Oriental [View Full Entry]

Very Impressive
Our first impression of Beijing was the new airport (only opened last week) and the sheer size of it all. We stayed in the middle of town in the Ma-or hutong, only a short distance from the Forbidden City. The hutongs are traditional narrow alley ways, and have been around for hundreds of years. Unfortunately they are rapidly being pulled down in the name of progress. They certainly are a hub of activity, and not 'westernised' in their presentation. We found our accommodation on the internet, "The Backyard Hutong" , and it came with great reviews. It certainly lived up [View Full Entry]

Blown Away by China

Asia » China » Beijing » Beihai Park
We began our 20 days tour through China in Hong Kong. We arrived a day before our tour started and spent a night at Guodadong Guesthouse in the infamous Chungkung Mansions. Our room was ultra compact but very clean and had just enough room for a TV. The ground floor of the mansion was manic and great for people watching. There were West African businessmen in dodgy Savel Row suits, pushy Indian touts and lost and bemused backpackers searching for their digs in the maze of different blocks, stairwells and elevators. The air in Hong Kong was dirty and visibility was [View Full Entry]

Pagodák Pekingben

Asia » China » Beijing » Beihai Park
Kedves Mindenki!
