Arriving in Beijing is really chaotic, as a first time. When I first got to the city, it was one of those days where the level of PM 2.5 was extremely high and I could not see much of the surroundings. After having dropped all my bags and stuff, I had a quick look of the area around me and, considering the heaviness of the air, I decided to have a bit of respite and better air quality heading to Beihai park which is among the biggest park in China. A bit of history: being one of the biggest in China, this park was built in the 11th century with an area of over 170 acres, comprising the enormous lake. Beihai means the "Northern sea". It is absolutely amazing strolling around it and there are a ... read more

It's a bit disconcerting to be always writing about the last place you were, from the current one. I'm losing track, boom boom, of which train I was on. My wads of paperwork, including an actual ticket, showed 3 different times for departure from Irkutsk for Ulaanbaator. I knew there was a constant in Russia to always refer to Moscow time but the ticket should be in local time (their instructions!) Whatever, I checked out of the hotel, unchecked by bag at the station, gave away the last of my roubles.....and had 6 hours to kill....hahaha in a soviet era waiting room in stinking hot weather with a crowd of professional circus quality freaks, I fitted in admirably. This time I shared a 4 berth sleeper with an overly self-assured and optimistic (but aren't they all?) ... read more

Off to Beijing Finally I am on the 4th trip of my travels. I have found the blogs invaluable in keeping friends and relatives updated on my status (a lot are worried of my age. I have looked through my blogs, sometimes just for revisiting the memories and osmetimes to answer a help query on Tripadvisor for which I had forgotten the details. So, I have decided to continue with the blogs. Sorry to anybody finding it tedious and boring. Thankam's return from India signaled that I can be on my way at last. Flew from Dublin with Etihad Airlines yesterday morning. The flights to Abu Dhabi and onward to Beijing was very pleasant as both had plenty of spare room to relax and stretch legs. Flying over the Hindukush the air got very turbulent and ... read more

Here we go. I had an awesome breakfast at the Sun World Hotel. It is a buffet with many meat, rice , noodle and vegetable dishes. There are even strange little white round stuffed breads. Then there is the regular American fare which is excellent. I chose an amazing variety of mushrooms and truffles and a fried thing that looked like a miniature stalk of Chinese cabbage. Then they had a great custard. I really wish you all could taste this. Of course, there was the great tea also. I am off to theBeihai Park. It is within walking distance and I am on my own today as my tour Starts tomorrow. It used to be the Imperial gardens of a bunch of dynasties. Plus there is a museum. Then hit the shops andstreets. I am taking ... read more

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that Ralph's laptop is now fixed. Hooray for the internet! The bad news is that I may have difficulty getting a Russian visa. Apparently new rules mean that you can only get a Russian visa in a country of which you are a resident. So, not China. However there is a ray of hope. They consider residency to be 'over 90 days' and since on entry to Japan British citizens get a 90 day stamp, we're hoping to get our visas while there for 4 days next month... Yeah. So I would definitely appreciate prayers that that all works out! If it doesn't then my other option is to post my passport back to a company in the UK and get them to do it ... read more

This is the final blog coming to you from our Beijing trip 2011! We have had a lovely time, and I know Nanny has really enjoyed herself, and has bravely plodded on (excuse the pun!) even though her legs and feet have not been cooperating at all times! Sunshine welcomed us this morning as we awoke with our early bird children. We had one final park to visit and that was Beihai Park. It is across from Jingshan Park and the Forbidden City, but much larger. A huge lake is situated in the middle of it and it is much more expensive to get in that Jingshan. We had been for a healthy lunch at Element Fresh before the park, and everyone was ready for a relaxing walk. The most famous thing about Beihai Park is ... read more

So incredible, so glad that we went! A mixture of, well, of course, acrobatics, but also classical Peking opera, modern dance, incredible set design and amazing costumes. No photos here as they were prohibited. I was so tempted to sneak a picture or two but didn't want Bao to see his mama being hauled away. Bao was pretty good the whole time except when the performers came out on bicycles, about 12 to a bike in impossible configurations. Then he shouted "My tuhn, my tuhn." Otherwise pretty good. Two days til Jin.... read more
