Okay so the job sucked. I trained with them for like four days and I would have felt like a complete dick if I had done it. Basically they pretend to be a talent agency and prey on broke people who really want to be actors and actress. They tell them they can make all this money doing extra work they just need to get some professional photos done….by one of their studios of course. T is all just a lie to get them to buy photos. The company never gets anybody a job. So I bailed on that. On the flip side, I have been hired as a freelance content writer for websites. It doesn’t pay well, but that’s okay I am happy to be paid to write. Eventually after you have a portfolio you ... read more

And onto our adventures in Cambodia.... The Cambodian border was slightly crazy, with loads of people in one small room and a man randomly shouting people’s names. We seemed to jump the queue because we were on a bus so weren’t expecting our names to be called so soon and didn’t hear them for ages (also because they were pronouncing them completely wrong!) However, we made it through and entered Cambodia, soon getting dropped off at the side of the road and transferred into a tuk tuk. We then hired the tuk tuk driver for an extra 3 hours (after booking our bus tickets to Sihanoukville for 3 hours later) and went for lunch. We had chicken amoch (a kind of local curry) and spring rolls J Katharine and I then went to the genocide museum. ... read more

Lets just pick right up where we left off. Okay so the jeep wasn't screwed or anything. Just a $50 flush to the fuel system and it was good to go. I did wind up repairing the brakes for $120 at the mechanics insistence. I am not sure exactly what was fixed because nobody speaks good enough English to tell me, but the mechanic is Vanna's brother-in-law so I just did it. So now the jeep is all good mechanically, all I need is my registration card and license plate. Socheata tells me that Vanna will do it for me, but after a 4 more days of waiting or so I am getting ancy. I decide to go to the Ministry of Transportation myself to find out how long it will take and what I need. ... read more

Sihanoukville is familiar territory to us. We had stayed here on our previous trip and had decided that this was the ideal place to ‘hole up’ and recouperate from our travels thus far. It was great to have a comfortable bed, cheap food and a lovely beach nearby (Otres Beach). As we arrived we could feel the ‘relief of the familiar’ and celebrate the fact that, for a while at least, we were going to stay put. The Mekong had taken a good deal out of us! Having visited the local pharmacy, for Janie, it became apparent that it was possible to buy ANY drugs, including really heavy duty ones, for a few dollars. In fact you can buy ANYTHING here for a few dollars! Our resort, The Beach Club, is a lovely friendly place run ... read more

This part of the cruise seemed like a blur. After moving to our new cabin and unpacking, we met up with our newly boarding guests. This is a very port intensive cruise starting with our call in Sihanoukville. Cambodia is light years away from neighboring Thailand or Singapore especially in terms of tourist infrastructure. The terrible destruction which occurred during the "Killing Fields" era is still evident in this poor country. Every family lost loved ones and the learning and religious institutions were eradicated. Fortunately, with its youthful population, that era is now history and the country is trying to rebuild itself both physically and emotionally. There are many foreign investors from China who are pouring money into the industrial sector because of the cheap labor and abundant natural resources. Joel Brinkley recently wrote in the ... read more

Siem Reap was an amazing experience like many other places I have been to up till now , god so many things to take in and observe , so many wonders of the world to have seen in such a short time , things that for a lot of people each one is an experience of a lifetime and this is all happening in one go to me , a constant barrage of wonders. I met a Russian archaeologist in Burma once ( another story how I met him ) and he told me then that one becomes complacent to such sights and wonders if you dont take a break and go back to reality for a bit then continue with travelling . I scoffed at this at the time but as the travelling went on ... read more

It is our last day in Sihanouk Ville. And there is not much else to be said about this place than it is a paradise. It's perfect. White beaches, clear water which officially has 27 degrees Celsius but it feels like 40 or 50, mainly in the afternoons and close to the shore. Almost too hot for swimming sometimes. And with a view of lots of tiny islands all around. It's spectacular. And I never looked this brown before. Davy says I look brazilian :) We originally wanted to skip the south of Cambodia as I was worried it'd be packed with tourists here but we chose to stay on Otres beach, the most quiet and nicest beach of Sikanouh ville and there are almost no people at all. Also the prices are reasonable and I ... read more

I've now officially been away for 2 months. As always, time is astounding me as it definitely feels longer! We've had a pretty busy few weeks in Cambodia, I think I've done more sight-seeing here than I had in the whole two months! We stayed in Stung Treng for the first night then left the next day for Ban Lung in the northeast. We were taken directly to a guest house which is usually expensive and we move on but this one was really nice and reasonable! We checked in and went down to the cafe which was too relaxing! I spent all afternoon there, watching 'The Royal Tenenbaums' and talking to other travellers. The next day we hired motorbikes again, maybe mopeds - I don't know the difference! We went to a nearby lake which ... read more
