The adventures of Simona and Davy in Asia

Asia » India » Maharashtra » Kashid June 2nd 2013

We were only coming back to India as our return flight home was from Mumbai. We had just 4 days there and still we decided to make the most out of it. What was obvious to us was that we didn't want to stay in Mumbai for a single extra minute that was necessary. First we were thinking about going to Goa but that was a little bit of crazy idea considering that we had just 4 days including the journey and flight tickets were extremely expensive. So then we absolutely fell for the idea of going to Kashid (thanks Indu for the tip!) which is called the Goa for a poor man. Perfect for us! :) It was supposed to be only 3 hour drive from Mumbai. And not touristy at all. But of course ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu May 25th 2013

Kathmandu was our gate to Nepal and to the Children's home in Talamarang. We were picked up at the airport by Bikash who takes care of the Children's home together with Neel and we were taken to their shops in Thamel. And we were offered to stay at Neel's house for the next few days before going to Talamarang. It was absolutely lovely of him. We got to meet his family, were offered breakfasts and dinners every day and it was perfectly close to the touristic centre of Thamel, to Monkey temple and to the famous Durbar square. Perfect with the exception of one day when we ended being locked in the house by accident and couldn't leave for a few hours for our planned trip :) Being in India for some time, Kathmandu feels like ... read more

Asia » Nepal May 24th 2013

The beauty of our travels was in the diversity. We visited the main tourist attractions, we were sucked into the athmosphere of sacred and old temples and the craziness and noise of huge and modern cities, we had time to relax on beautiful beaches, to enjoy the peacefulness of remote and non-touristy areas, to explore unexplored, to admire wild animals in the jungle and to meet friendly people along the way, to try the proper backpacking way of traveling and to have experienced some seriously mad adventures. Volunteering in an "orphanage" and spending nearly a month in a tiny village called Talamarang in Nepal in the middle of nowhere gave a completely new dimension to our holidays. It gave us the opportunity to stay in one place and not have to move every second day and ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur April 28th 2013

No stories from Kuala Lumpur this time as this was our fourth stop in KL and we did all the sightseeing already. So just a few snaps and one video http://youtu.be/KfE4Qaago8Y of a crazy rain and human feet running through a huge puddle, most of them taken while we were geocaches hunting in the town.... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gili Air April 24th 2013

Gili islands are tiny islands close to Lombok, Indonesia. It might sound a little boring now after all the other places we loved, but Gili Air is an absolute paradise, a perfect place for holidays and a perfect place to settle down and stay forever (we wish). First we spent a few days on quite touristy Gili Trawangan and did lots and lots of snorkelling and it was just amazing, white beaches and the most blue sea and so many fish swimming all around us. But at the end of the day, Gili T is a bit too touristy and a bit too overcrowded and there is too many pubs and parties for such a small island so we decided to get the short 15 minute boat over to Gili Air which we heard was a ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu April 13th 2013

For us, uninformed and unprepaired, Borneo was one big surprise. The first thing you notice about Borneo is the most amazing sky you have ever seen. It is the most beautiful mixture of all shades of blue with different types of clouds in different layers and everytime you look up you think wow this is really something special. The second thing we realized pretty quickly was that Borneo is much more developed that we would expect and very modern and very very expensive (although the public transport between cities and touristic places is an absolute disaster that would deserve some improvement). The only two things we have planned for Borneo was to climb the famous Mount Kinabalu in the northern Sabah and to visit the Bako national park in the sourthern Sarawak state of Malaysian Borneo. ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang April 2nd 2013

Every travel guide says that Luang Prabang is a must see in Laos and everybody we met said it's an absolutely beautiful place. So not stopping in Luang Prabang for a few days wasn't an option. It has this similar colonial style feeling of a town lying on the Mekong river as Kratie or Savannakhet but in all possible ways it is much more enjoyable city than the two of them. You do get immidiately why people like this place so much. Luang Prabang represents a perfect blend and infusion of the old and the new, the traditional and the modern, the touristy and the local, the urban and the pristine nature around. It is hard to imagine other place where you can visit the most amazing Buddhist temples and have the chance to soak in ... read more

Asia » Laos » East » Sam Neua March 27th 2013

In our effort to experience the real Laos, we hopped on the bus to Sam Neua in east Laos. Trying to get off the beaten track wasn't really comfortable and wasn't that cheap either. After exhausting 16 hours on the bus, we arrived to a small town in the middle of mountains and dense forests. Coming to the mountains pretty much means we spent the whole time on a bus bumping up and down and left and right as the journey is just turns and cliffs and downhills and uphills and more turns and luckily for lots of people on the bus, there are vomiting plastic bags available in an unlimited amount. Only a few tourists come here to Sam Neua, usually only to change a bus and cross the border to Vietnam. We definitely didn't ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Savannakhet March 23rd 2013

There is probably no point repeating how terrible our journey from Don Det to Savannakhet was. Travelling in Laos is simply awful, roads are really bad and maximum speed is 50 and sometimes even 30 km/hour and 100 km take easily 6 hours on a bus. Arriving to Savannakhet in very late evening with several hours delay was more a norm than a surprise to us. As it was shortly after the biggest storm ever with proper rain and crazy lightnings crossing the sky and one of them hitting a close power station, the town was dark and dead. Everyone was hiding at home and there were no tuk-tuks available at the bus station so we had to walk to town in dark and surrounded only by emptiness of the city and by barking of angry ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Don Det March 20th 2013

Our journey from Sihanouk ville to Kratie in the north of Cambodia was one of the worst since we started travelling. Getting bus at 7 am, arriving to Phnom Penh after mid-day was the easy part. We were told to wait for another bus at the bus station but then we were loaded onto a tuk-tuk and driven somewhere else to find out we were getting a mini-van to Kratie. It wouldn't be tragic if the weather in Phnom Penh wasn't sooo hot and sooo humid and we were sitting in the mini-van, squashed liked sardines and had to wait for maybe another 2 hours until they completely loaded the car with boxed, bags with rice, motorbikes and then it took another good few hours to get to our final destination. So when we arrived to ... read more
