7/4/07 Happy Fourth of July! I am writing this journal on a slow boat (15 hours) to the ruins of Bagan. We wanted to take the slow boat to soak in the country-side and experience village scenes. The boat travels the mighty Ayeyarwady River--the life blood of Burma. The scenery has been spectacular; very flat grasslands with lots of greens and yellows (and brown including the river water). The first few hours were pretty full of villagers, tourists and baskets of goods. We have made a few stops where villagers load and unload the boat. It was suprising to me when locals from the various stops actually ran aboard the boat to sell us food and wares. We themed the stops based on the items being sold: banana, chicken, mango and blanket. The weather has been ... read more

בצהריים ... read more

From the cool hills we dropped back down into the heat and boarded a government run night train bound for the temples of Bagan. And night train is just what we got, with the only light coming from a crazy lightning storm outside and our trusty 30c plastic torch inside. Met a couple of Aussies in our 'first class' cabin and had one of those sit-and-chat-in-darkness-on-arse-breaking-wooden-seats kind of conversations, cos sleep was outta the question. One derailment and 10 sleepless hours we rolled (literally) into Bagan station. Even though we were tired, we were also pretty damn excited to be here. Its not everyday you get to check out 2000 temples built by a succession of slightly deranged Buddhist-luvin Kings some 800 years ago! A short 6 hour nap later (the daytime heat was insane), we ... read more

Yangon or Rangoon? An early morning flight out of Bangkok placed us in Yangon, Myanmar--the country's capital city. The airport was . . .very nice . . .and very empty. Point of interest: for those of you who didn't know, Myanmar is the country formerly known as "Prince" . . .I mean, Burma. We soon realized a couple of interesting facts about Myanmar. Number One: The women have some kind of Buddha-Mud on their faces--which Billy was sure was their fancy make-up. Number Two: The men wear skirts. Number Three: Everyone chews Beetlenut. We are not entirely sure why any of these facts are important to the culture of Myanmar, but we are looking forward to asking Billy's Dad who should know all of the ins and outs of Myanmar. Anyway, Yangon itself was a ... read more

Bagan was once the capital city of Myanmar at its prime between 1084 and 1286AD. At that time the king started a temple building extravaganza raising nearly 4500 temples over that 250 year period. It is a spectacular view with nearly 2000 temples remaining that speckle the countryside and mountains looming across the Irrawaddy river. For two days we were shuttled around via horse cart. Our first day out we had an "aged" horse who limbered around so slowly bicyclists would pass us. The following day we got a younger, friskier horse named Lucky who pranced around rather quickly. Lucky seemed to be jet propelled by his farts. To get moving some gas had to be released, and once on the dusty dirt trail another round of farts was expelled much to the dismay of Jarrod ... read more

... read more

An Bine/Eric: Selber schuld. Hier ists voll fein, sehr gutes ... read more
