After a short flight from Yangon the four of us arrived in Bagan. Bagan is kind of like an alien planet, and you notice this before the plane has even landed just looking out the window. It's a difficult sight to explain but basically there are over 4000 stupa's, pagoda's and monasteries across the skyline in all directions as far as you can see. We spent three days in total in Bagan in a town called Nyaung Oo which was only about two streets big. It seemed that about half the town was tourist restaurants, 99% of which had no customers at all because of the low numbers of tourists in the country this year. For our first day we hired two horse and carts to take us around the main sites. Calling these animals horses ... read more

Je suis partie tres ... read more

Bagan a world out of this world. More like a mythical place right out of a adventure movie. The valley has thousands and thousands of Temples and Pagodas springing up from the earth in every direction. the last count done came up with 4600 Temples/Pagodas i think they were only counting the larger ones. If you were to count the small ones it would be well over 10,000. the bus ride from Mandalay to Bagan was a adventure in itself. Not one, not two, but THREE flat tires. The 2 of them running the bus, were a expert pit crew (they use to do Indy cars "I Think"). First tire change only took 5 minutes from stop to start. The second we had to ride on a km or two to get changed in the next ... read more

Myself and my 3 friends flew Air Bagan from Bangkok to Yangon on a nearly empty A-310, where I was the only white person! This is a new airline in Burma that just launched international flights, one per day!, to bangkok. There was almost noone in the "foreigners" immigration line at Yangon airport. We paid for most of our flights in advance (well, brian paid for mine, i still owe him money!) because of the cash issue I discussed previously. at the airport the exchange rate is $1 = 450 kyats. This is the official gov't rate. Luckily we knew better than to change money there, and we found a nice taxi driver who took us to a sketchy little building, someone's house, to change money at the real rate, $1 - 1250 kyats. The taxi ... read more

*Many of the photos in this blog entry were taken by Jeff Roberts at www.eyeballimaging.com/blog ©2007* Our flight to Bagan didn't leave Mandalay until late afternoon, so we slept in as long as the heat would let us, checked internet in town, then stopped for lunch at a tiny local place near our hotel. Judging by the stares, there might never have been foreigners inside the restaurant before. They were playing Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto" on the small restaurant TV, and I don't think Jeff and I were the only ones to notice that our earrings and jewelry were suspiciously similar to the costumes in the movie. Despite the bloody drama on TV, we got a lot more attention than the film. We had practically no language in common with the waiter, but he did understand "chicken" ... read more

BAgan, July 20th southeasterly wind. locusts call from the sprigs of trees patched between the barren fields, the flat plain erupts in odd little mountains, as if the fields had mustered all of their collective strength and popped up these random peaks of the same color. when the swallows retire the bats come alight though the sprinting wind has already displaced any airborn insect. the portals of each little mountain yawn with the stretching of the days light. these black pores dot the horizon below their respective earthen spires of which time will wash away to the soil from which they came- to have another go at the nurturing of corn, beans, and sprouts of all types. Temple Philosophy Leaning against a 9,000 yr old structure is humbling. they made pretty darn good bricks back then. ... read more

Words falter where heart and soul sing...This is Bagan. I can not articulate the magic of this ancient city, merely speak of its' history and appearance. Beyond these pages is the stuff from which dreams and imagination are made. Bagan is a 42 square Kilometer plain east of the big river. Stretching across this land is an archaelogical playground: over 3000 ancient temples. Most of them are made of brick and burnt orange in color, but some are white or yellow cement. On the first full day, we hired a covered horse cart (10,000 kyats) to drive us along the powdery dirt roads to some of the more significant locations. His horse was named Rambo and he was Tittee--two names I was able to remember. Some of the temples were well touristed with local vendors selling ... read more
