The Sultanate of Brunei's influence peaked between the 15th and 17th centuries when its control extended over coastal areas of northwest Borneo and the southern Philippines. Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by internal strife over royal succession, colonial expansion of European powers, and piracy. In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate; independence was achieved in 1984. The same family has ruled Brunei for over six centuries. Brunei benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of the highest per capita GDPs in the developing world. To be updated

Yesterday I had to go to work. Today I don't have to. This is what retirement is. Welcome to my Travel Blog! During the last month I've piled in sixteen entries to show a little of Brunei Darussalam, where I've been living for the last five years (deep at the bottom of the pile), and the major holiday trips I've made to different Asian countries. You may have seen some of the material elsewhere. Now I go live! Tomorrow I set out on an erratic journey which will finish in Sydney during October. It will take me first to Kuching and [View Full Entry]

I am off on another wandering trip soon, so if my emails to you are no longer welcome (ooh that probably means you don't like the fact that I am gallivanting again!) please send me an email and I will take your name off the list. Now where is my new rucksack! [View Full Entry]

Creatures in Brunei don't seem as menacing as creatures in NSW. The leaf insect in the first two pictures was outside my supermarket. The lizard was up a tree in the forest. I photographed all ll the bugs and moths inside my flat. [View Full Entry]

The range of pitcher plants and orchids that I've seen in Brunei is amazing. Here are some of my favourites. The orchids are probably mainly hybrids, but the pitcher plant is a rather humble natural breed which found growing in the wild. This one was a vine that grew all over the ground and up into the trees. The orchids are growing at the government-owned Rimba Orchid Centre, while we found the pitcher plants in the Berakas Forest Reserve. [View Full Entry]

In my first post I included a video of being in Kampung Ayer in a water taxi. "Kampung Ayer" is Malay for Water Village. Traditionally the Malay people lived in stilt houses close to, or over, the water in rivers and estuaries. When Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigated the world in 1521, his ships visited Brunei. Antonio Pigafetta, employed to chronicle his voyage and its discoveries, described the splendour of the Sultan of Brunei's court and dubbed this village The Venice of the East. It was a bustling and extensive capital city then. Today the walls and many walkways are made of [View Full Entry]

Remember not to lick the stamps It is something of an irony that the best bit of Brunei - one of the richest countries in the world - is its most run down area. Being such an oil rich country it is hard to find cheap accommodation in the capital city of Bandar but we were lucky and bagged the last rooms in the government run hostel. The only drawback was that women slept in one wing, men in another. This was the first hint we got of just how strict a Muslim country Brunei is, although the fact that the [View Full Entry]

I have been working in Brunei Darussalam for five years. Before I pack up and go back to NSW, Australia, I want to record some journeys I've made during this time. I'll start with visuals and post some of my favourite pictures of BSB (Bandar Seri Begawan). ... Gotta find out how this TravelBlog works! [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Brunei. It's a wealthy country, owned for all intents and purposes by the Sultan, who is one of the richest men in the world. It's standard of living is relatively high for the region and a good deal has been put into the Bandar Seri Begawan's cleanliness and architecture to ensure a pristine look about it. Brunei and its people are welcoming and friendly, trying hard to ensure you have a good time, a place to stay, and good food to eat. A tour guide, we met just as we were leaving the city was telling us that the [View Full Entry]

March 11, 2008 This morning around 8 AM we arrived in Brunei on the island of Borneo. Three nations share the island: Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. It is probably not correct to call them “nations” instead they should be called independent states. Brunei struck it rich around 1929 with the discovery of oil. There still must be plenty of this ever increasingly expensive resource available. Since my last visit more high-rise apartment buildings had been constructed in town. The most impressive building is the new mosque with its large blue dome. The current ruler built [View Full Entry]

Because of laziness and lack of computers we haven't been able to write for a while. It's been an eventful week since our last blog and we're deeply sorry. We'll begin at the beginning. As you might remember from our last blog, we were planning to go to a lagoon on Bantayan to do some snorkeling. The way there was a bit more rough than we expected, Erik poor flip-flops got penetrated by a lot of inch-long thorns. Hannes just like Achilles was wounded in his heel, though this time it was a mighty thorn. We snorkeled for half a day, [View Full Entry]
