The Sultanate of Brunei's influence peaked between the 15th and 17th centuries when its control extended over coastal areas of northwest Borneo and the southern Philippines. Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by internal strife over royal succession, colonial expansion of European powers, and piracy. In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate; independence was achieved in 1984. The same family has ruled Brunei for over six centuries. Brunei benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of the highest per capita GDPs in the developing world. To be updated

Brunei part two Asia » Brunei
Brunei (Part Two) While the men were climbing through the jungle, we women took a nice, leisurely tour of the cities. Our first stop was to view what is called water villages on stilts. Twenty eight small entities totaling almost 30,000 people are built on stilts over the water. They have schools and other facilities there, but most people commute by water taxi across the water to their cars and go to work on shore. This is not what you’d call shanty towns, either. The sizes of the houses vary and go from very small to rather. What many don’t have [View Full Entry]

B4runei (part one) Asia » Brunei
Brunei (part one) Our visit to Brunei was much more interesting than we both thought it would be. Bruce and Bruce Laing went on an “adventure” tour into the National Park, or jungle while Brigid and I toured the city and went to “Hi-Tea” (their words) at the seven star Empire Hotel. I really can not describe the Bruces’ trip nearly as well as either of them, as we laughed so much we were gasping for breath. I will only hit the basics and let him tell you himself - in person if possible. First of all, it was pouring rain [View Full Entry]

Padang Bai, Bali Asia » Brunei
Padang Bai, Bali Some people find themselves between a rock and a hard place, but we find ourselves between Cyclone Nicholas off the coast of Australia, a 7.6 strength earthquake off Sumatra, and a missile to be shot from the pacific near Hawaii at a wayward satellite that may drop toxic fuel in some remote place. What is one to do? Head for Brunei, that’s what. But first, I think I have time to tell you about our day in Bali on Feb. 19th. Many of the crew on the ship are from Bali, and they were able to get off [View Full Entry]

Brunei Asia » Brunei » Bandar Seri Begawan
Hi Everyone I arrived in Brunie (Bandar Seri Begave) at 3:00am gmt and 11:00am their time. I have not slept propaly yet for a good 40hrs, trying to get the odd hour every so often in the planes. My first flight was from Heathrow to Dubai which was only six hours, the flight was very smooth and no problems with it (sorry Matt) you was right it did not stall or need rebooting. the inflight entertainment seemed very reasonable and all they seemed to want to do is feed you which does not bother me. so far I have met and [View Full Entry]

An afternoon in Brunei Asia » Brunei
During our flight from Bali to Bangkok we had a four-hour layover in Brunei. Realizing we might never have another chance to visit the tiny country, we decided to leave the airport to see the city and get some lunch before our flight back to Bangkok. We flagged a taxi driver willing to drop us off downtown and pick us up two and a half hours later. We had no idea what to expect from the tiny Muslim island. The drive from the airport took us through a sparse, bright, wealthy city with wide open spaces and perfectly manicured gardens. Slick [View Full Entry]

My very first business trip in Asia took place in the last few weeks. It was a whirwind of meetings, cities, countries. I managed to visit sometimes a little bit here and there.. * Brunei: Unfortunately only flew there for the night, and stayed in an amazing hotel which was half full of business people, half full of holiday makers who probably flew in for the long week end from somewhere near. Brunei is a Muslim country and it's interesting to see how it's part of life. On the plane over a prayer took place before take off. Women wear the [View Full Entry]

We visited Brunei as part of our trip to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. For more photos from our trip visit - Ian and Wendy's travel photos from Brunei. We flew from Kuala Lumpur to Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei with a stop in Kota Kinabalu. The Royal Brunei flight was on time, a modern plane, and great service. It was pricy however: $200 one way from KK. We were staying at the Jubilee Hotel and had arranged (by email) a complimentary pick-up from the airport (and drop-off the next day). While [View Full Entry]

Where the heck is Brunei? Grab your atlas and find Borneo. It is a small country attached to Borneo. As it turns out that when traveling in Asia all roads more than likely lead to Kuala Lumpur which is in Malaysia. This is because it is a major airport hub in Southeast Asia, kind of like Atlanta in the U.S. We left Singapore for a 50 minute flight to Kuala Lumpur with a short lay over and then a 2 hour and 20 minute flight to Brunei. It’s all about perspective because the flight actually seemed short after our last one [View Full Entry]

Roughing it in Brunei
Roughing it in Brunei
Steve, Paul, Me.
What was initially going to be a two day stint in Brunei was axed to a one dayer. The original plan was to spend a day in the capital and then on the second day take a boat trip down the river through the jungles to try and catch a glimpse of some Proboscis Monkeys. Unfortunately the dork at the guesthouse we were staying at in Sabah told us the wrong boat time so we literally missed the boat on the first day. When I say 'we' I mean me, Paul and Steve. Neil had now gone his own separate way [View Full Entry]

**Dec14..I realized that I never finished this journal entry off. It was basically done, but I forgot a few things and forgot to post it up. So I woke up thinking “wow…this is my last full day in Brunei.” So I woke up to roosters in Sungai Teraban. Bapa (what I call my grandpa has a bird farm on his land. So roosters were making nosies, chickens were running around, the turkey was interesting and the ducks minded their own business far away. So lastday lastday. I didn’t plan anything big. I was suppose to hang out with safforo, but instead [View Full Entry]
