(Kev) Brunei is unique from the other countries we have visited in South East Asia. The only comparable country in my mind is Singapore, which is also incredibly clean. Brunei however shows its wealth. The sultan is supposedly the third richest man in the world…though his actual rank is debatable. The display of wealth is remarkable and it is evident through the various fountains, parks, and mosques that make up Brunei. The mosques were an amazing sight and experience. The first mosque we visited was Bandar Mosque. We entered through the wrong door, it was ok though we were politely corrected and given long black robes to cover up our legs. We were not allowed to take pictures inside the mosque, but were able to depict some of their grandeur nonetheless. On the Sultans 25th ... read more

1-21-06 Yesterday morning we hired a tour guide to take us around Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brueni. We climbed in a small boat which was going to take us up the Brunei river to see Proboscis monkeys. On the way I saw a 6 foot crocadile slide into the water. The boat stooped next too mangrove trees and we used binoculars to spot the monkeys. We saw them immediatley in the trees swinging around. The large ones were about 4 feet tall, had big wierd noses and they were very bulky. The females had smaller noses and they weren't as big. From far away it looked like they were wearing golden jackets. Our boat driver pointed out a flying fox, which is a type of bat. We saw iguanas and another type of monkey ... read more

Not much to tell! Pauline dropped me and Dave off at the airport and we flew Royal Brunei (quite good - they even blessed the plane!) to Brunei, internet cafe-d for 5 hrs, resisted the temptation to buy more postcards, looked for gold plated things but didn't find any and then flew on to Sydney where Pete had arrived an hour before us by flying direct by Singapore Airlines. Grr!... read more

Alright, well... it's been a week since I've arrived in Brunei. Today's the 22nd of June, and there's much to tell. Unfortunately, my 1 GB memory card that held 200+ photos gave out on me and I've had quite a few dreams since then of giving Visions a piece of my mind. I visited my cousins for a couple days before heading out on a Temburong tour, the most eastern district (or state?) of Brunei ($140 BD/person for permanent residents and citizens - otherwise, $240 BD/person for foreigners). Well, there's only four districts: Belait, Tutong, Brunei Muara, and Temburong. Because a large water inlet separates Temburong from the rest of the country, it's only reachable by a 45 minute water taxi ride. It's a good thing the taxi drivers are quite knowledgeable with the water routes ... read more

Four days after leaving Australia, we came to the little Muslim country of Brunei where we spent the day, as our tour literature said, admiring the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Brunei (rhymes with soon-eye) is a tiny oil-rich Islamic sultanate (its sultan is head of state) on the large island of Borneo. It has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. (Less than the US, but much higher than most of its SE Asia neighbors.) Its huge reserves of oil and natural gas finance a lavish life style for the Sultan and aristocracy, with enough left over to provide free education and healthcare for all citizens, plus subsidized food and housing. Brunei imports 80% of its food, as said citizens can live quite comfortably as clerks or subsistence farmers without going ... read more
