The Sultanate of Brunei's influence peaked between the 15th and 17th centuries when its control extended over coastal areas of northwest Borneo and the southern Philippines. Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by internal strife over royal succession, colonial expansion of European powers, and piracy. In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate; independence was achieved in 1984. The same family has ruled Brunei for over six centuries. Brunei benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of the highest per capita GDPs in the developing world. To be updated

Note: For all you lazy readers, i have a summary at the bottom of the blog. Enjoy! Day 1 - August 18, 2007 (Canada Time) 1:27 PM. So after some confusion in the parking lot, and some confusions of fees, I’m finally here waiting for Gate D65 to open. I know this isn’t really exciting, but why not start my blog with something unexciting like sitting in the departure place thing. AH! PEOPLE are lining up! Time to save and shut off laptop.. boy was this short *sigh.. im UP UP AND AWAY! August 20, 2007 (Singapore) - 12:39AM I’M HERE [View Full Entry]

Sorry for the blatant opinion there. I know how I get in to trouble when I post them but our two days and one night in Brunei's capital seemed like an eternity. The trip from Miri to BSB was short and comfortable and we settled in to our slightly less than desirable accommodation. Having had a quick wander around the mosques and having checked out a few of the sultan's palaces we soon realised that there really was little else to do. The evening in BSB was utterly dead and we couldn't even drink away our boredom as there is no [View Full Entry]

I have been to all countries in South East Asia (except East Timor). Brunei is the last country in SE Asia that I visited, and also my favorite country in the region. In May 2007, I visited Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) for a few days and enjoyed a great time over there. From Hanoi, I flew to Kuala Lumper then BSB on Air Asia budget airlines. My 15 hour transit at the LCCT (low cost carrier terminal) in KL was so long. Waiting for 15 hours over night at the airport was a real challenge to my patience. However, it was [View Full Entry]

So we arrive at the port of Brunei after a 1 hour boat ride from Labuan. James had made arrangements with one of his old Bruneian friends to meet us at the dock as we were staying over at his place for a few days. The transport in Brunei is completely unreliable and the busses run spontaneously. The taxis charge prices. So we were completely relying on James friend to be there. We stepped off the recycled aircraft interior vessel through customs where they searched our bags for a [View Full Entry]

Unlike Ferdinand Magellan we made it out of the Philies in one piece. We're still missing our daily power cuts and friendly security guards who carry shot guns, pistols, truncheons and knives to keep Dunkin' Donuts safe. A few boat journeys later we made it to Brunei where two days was more than enough. Despite being surrounded by lush tropical rain forest, lovely beaches and lots of furry animals, it seemed a bit like Milton Keynes just with more mosques and mozzies. We did get to see a huge water village, some monkeys and some spankingly OTT palaces, but Mark [View Full Entry]

We managed to get about an hours sleep at the airport, I got a bit more on the plane after we had taken off & then Claire woke me up for breakfast. When we got to Brunei we got our bags checked at the airport & questioned if we had alcohol with us. Although alcohol isn’t illegal here for non Muslim people you are only allowed to bring in a certain amount for personal consumption & have to declare it at customs. We arranged transport to the hotel we had booked & checked in about 1pm. We had air con [View Full Entry]

We landed in Brunei - our 10th country - and had to wait half an hour for a shuttle bus to take us to our accommodation, which turned out to be in the middle of nowhere. When we pulled up Erica and I were really surprised as there was nothing to tell us we were in the Capital city at all. The receptionist was quite rude to us, and she wanted a $200 deposit for the key card, which we thought was a lot, as it was over 65 pounds. Luckily there was an ATM around the corner because all [View Full Entry]

In Brunei all that glitters is gold. Nagara Brunei Darassalum (Brunei: the abode of peace) is a welfare state but it has no income tax and is the only country in the world that hasn't held any elections at all since 1962. (Why bother rigging elections?) The GDP per person in Brunei is $US23,600 (2003 estimate. CIA FACTBOOK) It is one of the worlds smallest countries with a welfare system that includes free health care, education and even help from the government with buying a house. The reason for this wealth is tha [View Full Entry]

Hey Everyone!! This is the first installment of my treacherous trip!! So far I left Australia this morning (14th) at 1pm… only a few tears. *sniff, sniff* Got onto my flight without too many hassles - Sat down and watched TV and ate food for six hours. Then at around 7pm, we tried to get off the flight and into Brunei…. However Rose and I had a little problem when we realised they would let her through, but not me!! Argh!! I had to get a visa cause I’m Aussie, but since Rose is NZ she didn’t have to…. What’s with [View Full Entry]

Ok, so the trip over to Borneo didn’t start out the smoothest. I left Singapore with lots of time to get over to Johor Baru in order to catch my flight to Miri. But…I got stuck in traffic leaving Singapore, stuck at the border when the Malaysian authorities ran out of immigration forms, and then once I got through, I couldn’t find the bus station that would get me to the airport. Lonely Planet gave this great little piece of travel advice on saving money by taking the bus, but the departing location was not on the map. Go figure. So, [View Full Entry]
