The Sultanate of Brunei's influence peaked between the 15th and 17th centuries when its control extended over coastal areas of northwest Borneo and the southern Philippines. Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by internal strife over royal succession, colonial expansion of European powers, and piracy. In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate; independence was achieved in 1984. The same family has ruled Brunei for over six centuries. Brunei benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of the highest per capita GDPs in the developing world. To be updated

Canadian Faces! Asia » Brunei » Bandar Seri Begawan
So I woke up at 4:10am hearing echos. Then slowly, the echos sounded like familiar voices. Then I realized it was Darren’s and Vanessa’s voices.. but where were they? They weren’t on the bed. I walked around the room and I couldn’t find then. What the heck? So I gave up and just laid down. 5 mins later, Vanessa walked in the room through the curtains that lead to the balcony. Doh, they were on the Balcony lol. So I went backto bed, and woke up at 5:30AM as planned. Guess what? TIME FOR PHOTOS! I started taking photos at around [View Full Entry]

Okay, so before I explain my trip to Empire Hotel and Country Club, I’ll give you a little explanation. Basically, its Brunei’s main tourist attraction and even the LOCALS go to Empire for a vacation. It’s located right beside the beach and its massive. Google it.. I dare ya…. I DOUBLE DARE YA! Anyways, so I just started the morning by eating breakfast at Aseil’s house. And then, I ate breakfast again with Darren and his family. Went over to Darren’s house and waited for him and ness to pack. Took a while… a long while.. lol. So then, we ar [View Full Entry]

So Darren Slept over again and apparently I snore and I move around a lot lol (i guess I was tired). So today, I basically went with cico, Vanessa and Darren to Aseil’s house (cico’s girlfriend of 7 years). She lives in Bandar, and since tomorrow we’re going to empire (which is also in Bandar), we decided to go over to aseil’s house and sleep over. We arrived in Bandar and Nessa and Darren went to go do some tennis training. Cico and I just kind of hung out in Aseil’s house. For dinner, cico made a barbeque which was quiteee [View Full Entry]

So yes.. it's really hot here.. ...... I woke up and headed right over to Panaga club to watch my cousin train tennis (she’s freaking pro! She represented Brunei in some borneo national games). Darren was playing with my Nintendo Ds… poor guy had to wake up early to send nessa to tennis lol. Anyways! After tennis we went over to the Tamu (market). Quite interesting to eat in a market again. Nessa ordered me Mee Hoon. The trip back to the house was quite nostalgic. Cico (nessa’s bro) drove me past my old Flat (apartment thing). I saw it and [View Full Entry]

Us kids @ Empire=)

A ferry to Labuan Island and then one to Muara brought us to Brunei, providing a welcome break from bus journeys and a chance to see one of the richest countries in the world, run by one of the richest men in the world. Free education, free health care, subsidised housing, subsidised cars, and no income tax are just a few of the perks of being a citizen of the Sultanate of Brunei. Downers are the legality of detention without trial, a lack of democracy, and having a ruling family peppered with members hell-bent on spending money ill-advisedly (e.g. on thousands [View Full Entry]

When she left, I was on my way to trekking kuala belait (city im in). So kind of walked 20 mins in one direction, and then got really scared when I saw three stray dogs, and then I walked back through the [View Full Entry]

Family Dinner
My grandparents, Didi and Woddy, and I

Arrival in Brunei At around 12PM local time, I arrived in Brunei. This was it! While the airplane was flying over Brunei, it started to feel real. I saw the oh so familiar trees, and the non-blue rivers, and cars driving on different sides. That’s when it started to feel real to me. On arrival, I wasn’t sure what to do. Earlier, I was required to fill out a health card thing and an immigration card thing. But after talking to a few immigrant looking people (white ppl :)), I knew what to do with the cards. I handed in my [View Full Entry]
