Wow, what a week. I went shopping in Kampala for the computers. Uncle Paul sent me to town with a student, Joseph, he is a senior 4, so he has 2 more years before university, and he is 21. Its amazing here, you are never to old to still be in highschool. American highschoolers could learn something. Simon, the computer teacher went with us. THe two guys I felt so bad for, I was just awed and amazed at everything. I stopped and watched a lady doing hair in the mall. Way cool. She told me should could do my hair in a couple of hours. IT was fine, I passed. I aslo stopped and looked at the skirts. Gorgeous. Of course I didn't buy anything and so the men running the vendor complained that those ... read more

Africa Thank you all for your posts and emails. It is goods to hear from home. I am really starting to adjust well. I can’t believe just5 a few days ago I seriously doubted that I would be able to make thirty days here without family, now I am already trying to figure out how to get everthing done before I leave. Molly and I will be going to a womens retreat in Jinija in July. there will be women from all over Africa. I am looking forward to that. Some of you have asked about the netting over my bed. The netting over the bed is to prevent mosquitoes from biting me ang giving me malaria. I am taking malaria pills but the netting is prevention. It also helps keep cockroaches from climbing on the ... read more

Christmas in June: Today I went to the school in Kampala. Its amazing so many children so few resources, yet they get by with Gods provision for the school and their lives. Everyone seems to just be praising God. I asked Paul when we got to the school, can you look at your past students and point to one and know that one if it had not been forGod and this school , they wouldn't have survived, or would be destitute. His answer was a resounding yes, there are many, many, many. He then went on to introduce me to Ida. Ida shared her story, heartbreaking to say the least, but by Gods grace intervining in her life she has gone on to university, and now has a job in her field. I ask her permission to share and ... read more

hello, Sorry for the long delay, between power outage, then phone network outage and a computer issue of not excepting my format. I am good to go now. My first day has been very emotional. Poor Cliff, Molly/Paul's second son, has been toting me around all day,and each new encounter I have started crying. Maybe its the jetlag. He brought me to the school and showed me around. The play ground was something to see. In America children would be told to not play near it. I will have to take a picture next time I am there. When I first arrived I met Christian, Molly/Paul's daughter. She was playing with a 18month old. The baby saw me with my white skin and light colored hair and started too cry. I found it a little funny. ... read more

We have to pay $50 for visa to enter Uganda at the border. The scenery is similar to Rwanda, lots of planted vegetables green mountains etc. When we had a pee stop i saw 2 birds, the Ugandan national bird cant remember the name of it at the moment, it was in the cultivated field searching the soil for grains i guess. After a long cold drive we stopped to bush camp on the side of the road, few policemen later on stopped and ask us what we are doing there, they promised us protection from bandits etc... It was a difficult bush camp, terrain is rocky and not much space, but we made it through the night anywaysNext day arrived in Kampala and we are staying at the Red Chilli campsite. It has a nice ... read more

ok so i have like one more day in kampala... i managed to get some gifts for people that i hopefully won't break over the next few months. we got out of class early today and i head some cheese nan (like a cheesey pita thing) and a nice cold nile beer. it made me happy... that's about it. well ok - not really. we got to talk to a homestay dad who happens to be a member of parliament - specifically for the districts we visited in lira... it was frustrating and difficult. yup - i would elaborate but i'm not really in the mood - just thinking about it actually is making me a bit angry. there's such a disconnect between southern and northern uganda. - i'll leave it at that and spare you ... read more

Well, the devil is definitely not happy about this trip. I think something big is happening. The trip is with out a life changing trip, I can't wait to see what is up Gods sleeve. Yesterday started out well, got a lot accomplished in the morning, then I had a flat tired. It took several hours to get the tire fixed, and on the vehicle. I am so thankful for Fran, we calmly got the rest of my to do list done, no stress, just one thing to the next till my list was complete. As soon as the tire was fixed though, the steering in the van started to act up, and then the car overheated. So, Isaiah and I and Garry were on Goff hill for about 1.5. Thank God for Frank. He came ... read more

we literally just got back to kampala. it was a long ride. i'm not even sure what to write because i'm so exhausted right now. tonight we go back to our homestays, have class friday, a free day/going away party on saturday and then off to rwanda on sunday. i feel like we've been here much longer than we actually have, but it seems like i haven't had enough time to do anything much. i'm torn between spending more time with my homestay family and trying to see things like the source of the nile and the hindu temple... i haven't really had much time to buy stuff for people either. i might try to get my homestay family a white hen (yes a live one) and give it to them... i'd have to bring it ... read more

that's it's actually painful. today we visited different ngo sites. i went to world vision uganda. it was interesting, but apparently they're a super christian organization which i found to be a bit problematic. um... what else. i have a collection of blisters from bringing crappy shoes that i thought would be comfortable but turned out not to be... things that are still odd for me: looking for cars while crossing the street - they drive on the wrong side of the road here and it totally throws me off, especially because you literally run through lots of traffic and hope that bodabodas, bicycles and taxis don't run you over. bodabodas are motorcycles that are called bodabodas because of when idi amin went nuts people we trying to leave the country and were saying something like ... read more

has arabic on it. i started missing home yesterday... i realized how long i'm going to be gone for and it started to freak me out -- i'm going to be so dirty and covered in freckles by then. tomorrow we visit ngo sites and talk to people. it'll be a pretty independant day so that should be cool. i am going to visit world vision. today in class it kind of hit me how intense this program is going to be. we had a lot of orientation crap and today we finally watched a movie on the conflict in northern uganda. people getting their ears, lips and hands cut off... the role of the us in continueing the war... post-9.11 developments, etc - pretty fucked up and depressing. i'm also getting used to paying for ... read more
