So, here we are! After one week in Kampala we are finally getting more or less settled in our house and in the city. We are staying in a house in a quite peaceful area called Bunga, about five kilometres from the city centre. We have a small garden and a porch where we have all our meals. The house with its four bedrooms is quite big for us two (especially looking at the big family living in a small house in our backyard…) but soon Kenge comes to stay here as well, and the house is very nice and comfortable. After a day in the intense city it feels good to come home. We have a neighbouring bar just beside our house and it is a nice place to enjoy a beer in the sunset. ... read more

Long time we know since our last blog but finding fast internet is a bit tricky and we have given up on uploading photos until we get back to Aussie in a couple of weeks. We have some amazing ones so please stay tuned. After Zambia we headed across the border into Malawi with a wee hiccup being that they had stopped giving Visas at the border for some nations which included 4 of our party. After about an hour of sweet-talking by our guide, they were able to come across but had to go immediately to the capital Lilongwe to get their visas. This gave us some extra time there for a decent Indian curry and a bit of a browse in the market. That night we camped at Senga Bay on Lake Malawi which ... read more

After an pretty uneventful trip over - except having to make 2 bags into 1 using the magic of industrial cling film, which then meant I had this 30kg impossible to move clingfilm bundle, oh and also my Mum breaking my glasses just as we were leaving for Heathrow - I'm here and everything seems pretty good. Staying with our friends, John and Lesley Magnay and their 3 children, who live really centrally in Kampala. Their house is fantastic and really nice to be starting the trip here. John's been more than helpful with getting everything set up and getting me prepared to leave Kampala on Saturday. Not too much of a culture shock at the momment. Is what I expected it too be really, quiet similar to when we visited St. Lucia. It's very green ... read more

Day 259 - Christmas Day (25/12/08) Carly woke up thinking she had forgotten something and not that it was Christmas day, but her camera. After a frantic look amongst last nights clothes, we both came up empty handed but confident that I'd left it at the pub the night before. Certain our luck was to run out soon Jez jumped on a moto back down to the Pub arriving back fifteen minutes later with the camera in hand. Phew!! After some delicious pancakes for breaky, things were looking up and we jumped on the truck set for Lake Buoyoni. With some Christmas carols pumping from Carly’s IPOD we missed a call from home and then ran out of reception as we continued through the mountains, disappointed not to wish everyone at home a Merry Christmas. With ... read more

Merry Christmas Loved Ones, The weirdness of time zones allows us to open our Christmas letter to you by describing our day on Christmas Eve day. We have been missing all of you, and all the wonderful holiday cues and traditions - cold weather, santa claus at the mall, Christmas parties, lights, carols, the streets and stores decorated in wreaths and bulbs, and the general warm fuzzy feeling that comes with this time of year. We went out to the BeadforLife village this morning after our pregnant friend, Harriet, called us and asked if we would come pick her up there and give her a ride to Kampala because she was starting to have contractions (I’ll save you the suspense and tell you now that no, she didn’t give birth while we were with her today). ... read more

This morning I watched a teacher walk down our road to the school just below us. Moments later, I saw her walking back up to look for transport home. Today is a national holiday for Eid, the Muslim Christmas. The striking thing about this is that as of Friday, none of us knew if Monday would be a holiday or not. On Saturday, we ran into the head of our son's school at the store. We had heard that Monday might be a holiday, so I asked her if the school would be open. she said she didn't know yet, and that she would put a sign up on the gate Monday morning if the school was closed (she didn't, but it was). I fully admit that I don't know enough about Islam to know if ... read more

Well, we've been back in Uganda for about a month now, and it seems like it is time to finally get this here blog started. Many of you know the course we've taken to get here, because we have visited you along the way. For our own recollection, though, I decided to put up a little Reader's Digest version of the last four months. The main theme for these wanderings was visiting family and friends one last time before leaving the country. And we did a pretty darn good job of seeing a lot of people! To clarify the timeline, I left my job at IslandWood and Simmy left his daycare at the end of July. Devin has somehow managed to steadily continue her BeadforLife work through all of our nomadic wanderings. We rented out our ... read more

Hi all in Uganda now just went and saw the new Samuel L Jackson film, its not good not knowin reviews for films as it was a load of pants. Not recommended. So I will carry on were I left off last time, we left Stone town and got a minibus up to the North to stay at a beach resort called Nungwi, was a really nice place even though the double rooms had 3 double beds in them, a little random. Actually all the rooms had 3 double beds in them. Was a really good time done a lot of scuba diving while there, and I am now a PADI Advanced diver which is cool, it basically means I can now dive and do more or less anythink now like deep sea diving, night diving ... read more

I can't believe how long it is since I've done a blog but I think it's quite common ... at first so much is new and exciting and then day to day life takes over. Anyway I have lots of lovely pictures of Uganda for your delight and delictation as I took a week off to go on a big safari trip to the West with John Paul. On a five day trip we covered many miles - and very many potholes - and stayed in 5 lovely places. Lake Mburo national park in a very posh tent, Isasha in an even posher tent, Mweya in the Ugandan equivalent of a 5 * hotel complete with swimming pool, massages and fabulous cocktails by the campfire for the 'safari' bit of the trip. Then Lake Ndali in ... read more
