Hello All! A quick update! (As per usual)! We have been relaxing and exploring the jewel in the crown of East Africa the past week... Spice Island, Zanzibar! This place is absolutely divine - think: Lisbon meets Venice meets Morrocco meets Grenada (the beaches). We have a few more days left in Tanzania... these will include a hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti & a 3 day adventure in Serengeti National Park. After that it is off to Nairobi, Kenya and then homeward bound! (Almost)! One of our first nights here we sat in the bar-hut of our campsite... Klay bought a local gentleman a package of cigarettes following which he bestowed upon him not one of his 50 (yes I wrote fifty) daughters but two! hahaha Klay then proceeded to auction me off for ... read more

In an attempt to get in shape for Kili, I’m going to be running a 10km race on Sat and probably another one in a few weeks. I reckon it will be kill (me) or cure, particularly after some overindulgences in Dar. I’ll be raising money for Kinshai, so I’m looking for sponsorship. To remind you, here are some of the things Kinshai does: * HIV testing and counseling in the offices in Moshi * Family planning education * Care of HIV positive babies * Adolescent health and condom negotiations * Education and support for people living with AIDS * Awareness of sexual violence issues * Educational materials for ophans * Support for elders left looking after orphans in the community Would be great to get donations from any of you. Send me a mail ... read more

Before leaving Ongata Rongai this morning we stopped at the post office on the campus of Kenya Telecom. There we discovered they had a dozen warthogs grazing on their lawns. We don’t know if they just come in or if the keep them on purpose. At any rate, they look so funny when they kneel down to graze. Later we discovered that our postcards mailed from this post-office just outside Nairobi reached our son in Oslo the day after. This must be some postal miracle. The high point of our flight to Zanzibar was the magnificent view of Mount Kilimanjaro. The view was probably much better from the air than from the ground. This time of the year you very typically have a layer of clouds hiding the peak from view. We rode a small aircraft ... read more

Day 83: Sunday, August 13: Nairobi to Arusha, Tanzania I met up with our truck, guide and most of the people on the tour. A lot of them have already been together for about 2 weeks, checking out the gurillas and Maasai Mara. There were 8 of us that are new and another 10 or so leaving in Zanzibar with 10 more joining up. So its a bit of a hop-on/hop-off kinda tour, which I think is okay because it just means a bunch of fresh new faces. Once on the road, I quickly learned about truck life. The roads are bad, potholes everywhere, if the road even really exists. The truck is slow and every time we pass a town or village, we have to slow down to a crawl for the speed bumps. 7 ... read more

At the moment I am by Lake Malawi (Kande Beach) after some hefty days of travelling. Lots has happened since my last blog and seeing as I didn't write much then I have a lot to tell you! We arrived on Zanzibar on the 8th August after spending one night by the beach in Dar es Salaam. It was a beautiful white sand beach with a cool campsite with hot showers - something of a luxury here. The ferry across to Zanzibar takes about 2 hours, during which about half the passengers become very sea sick and wonder why on earth they are putting themselves through this. It was very hot on the ferry and even though I dont get sea sick usually I felt terrible and spent most of the journey on the top deck ... read more

Having a great time here so far in Tanzania, we are just back from an overnight bush camp in the Serengeti. You literally just pitch your tent up in a designated area but there is no fence to keep anything out so you really are in amongst everything. There was one pit toilet to use but as this had definitely seen better days the preferred option was to use the great outdoors instead - even knowing what was out there, which proves just how bad it was! We were one of three lucky (!) tents that had lions sleeping outside throughout the night. We were on the edge of the camp & the safari guides (who were safely locked up in a caged area, they said this was because they had to stay along with the ... read more

im in the middle of the registration process, it has forced me to visit the many many offices. some of the buildings are very tall and since we are elevated over the city (city in a bit of the distance) there are some awesome views from the offices at the tippy tops. got me distracted from listening. most of the professors arent around, but the ones that are..some are fascinating. i will take a graduate coarse called "international issues" on globalization and such, we read mostly books from professors at the university. if i leave only with a good udnerstanding of the african-intellectual understanding of globalization and the global divide and africas feasible and positive abilities to "Develop" then i wil have done well. also wil probably take an art class, art and social mobilization, where ... read more

Hello All! So, remember when I said we were going to take a ferry to Zanzibar? Yeah, well, it was apparently full, so instead we were talked into paying $20 more each for a 30 minute plane ride. Sounds great, right? I have a confession...little planes scare me. Our plane was not just little, it was the most puny little thing with wings that could be considered man-made! Our luggage barely fit in the tail, big guys up front, small ladies in the back so we would be balanced. We took off, and were leaning a bit, but in all fairness, the rest of the flight was wonderful! We had a very dapper pilot from Belgium who took good care of us. Still, that plane was not my preference! We are totally taking the ferry back ... read more
