Zanzibar has only one town, Zanzibar Town and its old part, Stone Town. Throughout the rest of Zanzibar, or properly Unguja, the largest island of the archipelago comprising Zanzibar, you will only find small villages. Of course we had to go see Stone Town. For USD 50, Rama, the driver of Tamarind Beach Hotel, took us safely the 45 kilometres into town and waited for us to return. Rama drove around the perimeter of Stone Town to give us an idea of where the different attractions were. We decided to be dropped off just outside the House of Wonders which was the palace of Sultan Bargash when it was completed in 1883. We walked along the waterfront to the Old Dispensary, a very beautiful building carefully restored by the Aga Kahn Trust for Culture. Next we ... read more

Day 87: Thursday, August 17: Arusha to Mt Kilimanjaro Today we headed into the town of Arusha for a couple of hours and then made our way to a small village at the base of Mt. Kili. The roads were reasonable and it was only a 3 hour drive. We relaxed in the evening, a few beers and some card games.. Day 88: Friday, August 18: Mt. Kili To hike up to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro is a 5-6 day trek. Obviously I don't have the time (and certainly not the endurance) to climb to the top. We did have an optional to climb to the base camp, but I decided not to. For a couple of reasons, 1) the park fees is $60, plus a guide. 2) You can't see anything at the basecamp, ... read more

i am in great spirits today. just met some austrian and german exchange students i am keen on. morogoro was a nice little town. the four hour drive in the bus was nice since the landscape changed so much. i kept writing quickly everything i saw on the ride, the colors changed, the flowers changed, the trees, the distances to which i could see, the landscape, the types of houses, everything. went from large metropolis to the mountains built in the great rift valley, mountains that spike up every which way and make little sense in the landscape. reminded me exactly of the mountains i was in last summer around this time south of mexico city. first day we woke up at 5 in order to enter mikume national park at 7. the drive into the ... read more

If you are looking for a secluded place with picture perfect beach, then Pongwe Beach Hotel would be a good choice. We rented bikes and it took us about 45 minutes to go from Uroa to Pongwe. We were given a very friendly welcome by Val Preston and his staff. At Pongwe Beach Hotel you are welcome to use their facilities as a “walk-in” guest provided you deposit Tsh 15.000 per person. If you buy food and drinks at the place, then the value of that will be drawn on the deposit. When you leave, you have to pay anything you spent extra. We thoroughly enjoyed our day at Pongwe Beach Hotel. The beach is immaculately groomed, the sea is just as green as you see in the pictures and the palm-trees are majestic. It is ... read more

After a long drive through Kenya we crossed the border into Tanzania and headed for Arusha. Another beautiful sunset from the truck meant we again reached camp after dark. This meant pitching our tents for the first time without being able to see what we were doing. Fortunately, the new additions to our tour had just returned from a fortnight’s camping to see gorillas in the Congo, and were more than willing to help out us newbies. Little did we know that this was going to be the least of our worries… At about 10:30pm most people started to feel some stomach pains. Sitting in the bar, smiles started to fade and people began to leave. The rest of the night was spent with most people suffering from cramps, diarrhoea, and even vomiting (which was amusingly ... read more

The view from our bungalow is simply beautiful. Palm trees, the Indian Ocean and the sky. It is so quiet here. The only sound you hear is the sound of the waves breaking on the shore. Oh, yes. I almost forgot: There is a mosque nearby and by 5.30 the imam calls for prayer. A little later the cocks start crowing. But those sounds underline the silence of this place. This is the perfect place to relax. There is absolutely nothing to do here except take it easy. Oh, yes. There are quite a number of fishermen going out between 6 and 7 every morning. The sun rises at 06.25 and I try to be there to get some nice pictures. The light is changing quickly at that time, so it is very interesting for photography. ... read more

Hello Everyone! Well, we have had a wonderful time here in Africa. I guess I'm going to have to upload those pictures when I get home. Sorry about that, but we have some amazing pics that I'm really excited to share with you all as soon as possible! Our snorkeling adventure was fun (a little cold, but who cares!) and we had an amazing night at the Forodhani Gardens, this green space in Stone Town that bursts alive at night with tons of vendors selling grilled kabobs of every fish and meat imaginable! We wandered around and ate until we burst! The next day we thought that we would just become beach bums, but Vaughn called this tour operator to see if we could get onto Chumba Island, the most pristine coral reef and wildlife sanctuary ... read more

It's been an eventful week, full of the unexpected - bumping into people, going to weddings, meeting up with AIDS consultants and gathering material for the library/reception at Kinshai. As ever, nothing ever quite goes according to expectations. So, having gotten to a conference in Swahili, one of the things I did was take advantage of the location and go for a hike in the Uluguru hills. These are about 3 hours south west of Dar. I was taken up by a guide - 26 year old James, who wanted to know why I thought some people are poor and some are rich. He asked me about education in the UK, social services, poverty and he also wanted to know what I thought about (the common practice here) of polygamy. He escorted me on the 16 ... read more
