A few weekends ago a handful of teachers decided to jump on a ferry to Stonetown for a few days where there was an annual Swahili music festival going on, Sauti za Busara. Some excellent bands coupled with the now familiar frustrations of Africa made for an overall great weekend. In fact, I hadn't planned on going to the festival mainly because I had not booked a room, so on Wednesday night my friend Christy and I sat in Cody and Nora's (Nody) apartment where I was berated into calling a few places. After a number of negatives we tried the place Nody had booked months ago. Not only did they not have a room for me, they had no record of the reservation that had been made! So now there were four of us ... read more

At long last we are able to get on to our blog and update it. Once again thank-you for sending messages we read them with relish and some salt. A pinch thereof. 15 Dec on we travelled north along the Malawi Lake. In places the lakeside resembles a coastal cove with small lapping waves. Mkuzi Beach lodge is nice and apparently room 8 is the best one to stay in. Sangilo lodge is an hour and a half from the Tanzanian border and not a bad stopover. Sometime between the 15th and Christmas we entered Tanzania and arrived at our first lodging on a coffee plantation - Utungele. We could defnitely have stayed there another night as the walking is great and the pool big cool. We met an intrepid biker from Bath who had already ... read more

Writing from Stone Town, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania, we have safely evacuated Kenya. Seeing headlines such as "tension building in Mombasa" has made us quite glad that we did so. After 5 glorious days in the town of Lamu, we headed south to Malindi, a region heavily developed by Italians and full of the typical touristy holiday problems that I used to love, and now loathe. Being constantly approached by people selling useless trinkets was a lot more fun in Mexico when I was 12. After a few memorable day trips, one to the ancient ruin town of Gede, we decided Mombasa would be a better place to spend Christmas and witness the elections. Christmas in Kenya this year was extremely uneventful, due to the fact that 97% of the population decided to forego holiday travel ... read more

Hello All! Today was a free day after the stress of ISP writing and presentations as well as Kiswahili final exams. All went very well, and it was so cool to hear all about the projects that the other ladies did for the past month. Yesterday all of us headed out to spend some more money on gifts and souvenirs. I am so glad that I did shopping early on, we are so sick of the shopkeepers harassing us that we are totally unmotivated to shop. Last night we went on a pub crawl through stone town and had a great time having fun here. Today we all took a boat out to Changu/Prison Island off of stone town to lay in the sun, see the Aldabra giant tortoises and have a pineapple eating contest! Random ... read more

Wow. I cannot believe that I am only in Africa for 6 more days. The past three have been spent pounding out ISP papers (literally...the keyboard I have been using you have to bang on to get the keys to work!). I am so happy to have mine done. I spent 12 hours in front of a computer on Friday getting it done, two hours yesterday morning, and then went to get it printed, copied and bound. It is done! One interesting note that now seems relevant. There are places to get photocopies made on almost every corner of every town that I have visited. Photocopy places are like the Starbucks of Africa. It cracks me up! I have been living in an apartment on the third floor of this really old building near the cathedral ... read more

Well, after two amazing nights at Fundu Lagoon we are all back in Stone Town cramming in as much time in front of computers as we can to write our ISPs...a frustrating experience with unreliable outcomes here usually! I have already been typing for 5 hours today and fighting my way through excel to graph all this data. I wish I knew how to use that program a little better! We are still on our own for the next three nights in stone town. I am living in my apartment...and it turns out that the whole building was where all the SIT ladies ended up. People are crashed on the floor and sharing rooms...we jokingly refer to it as the SIT brothel. The hard part is the lack of keys...three sets between about 12 of us. ... read more

When coming to Zanzibar one is told to expect all sorts of interesting, bowel-distressing, general health-reducing, occasionally fatal diseases and experiences. Malaria, Yellow Fever, (little ebola going around in Uganda...), a batch of cholera here or there, jiggers: really fun: you can see them wiggling around merrily laying their eggs in your feet (in reality you don't usually get as far as the wiggle stage... a friendly neighbor will take a knife to your toe and start digging before that happens...) being in any kind of moving vehicle: rocks, dogs, cats, other people, other cars, yawning precipices -- all aimed directly for and then swerved away from (in most cases) at the last possible instant. - The ultimate game of chicken. (In a recently relayed Kate adventure ... when asked why she would not re-board ... read more

so funny story about how I thought the nyamanzi blog had been published a while ago... guess not... anyhoo... Was for a while attempting to get out of Africa early... no can do. so mostly over it now. I've finalized all of my flights and thought I'd share a list of airports that I have been frequenting this past semester. San Francisco International, JFK, Dubai, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia, Arusha, Kilimanjaro. :) Also fun fact: I woke up today with Puff the Magic Dragon and Riding Dirty stuck on simultaneous repeat in my head. Not really sure how that happened - but very positive it means I have entered a whole new level of musical deprivation. - traveling with out my ipod was NOT A GOOD PLAN! anyhoo thats me currently. I have (another) ... read more
