I woke up feeling good, thanks to the painkillers last night. The first thing I did was call up my parents in India to tell them that I managed to get my ass on the top. My mom sounded very excited. Cellular coverage was very impressive during my entire climb. I saw Ambrose texting at Uhuru Peak. If only mobile companies in US would visit developing countries and see for themselves how good the coverage is. Then it was time to have a group photograph with my crew, pay the tip and listen to Jambo song/dance routine that other climbers were doing. My crew was really good - they seemed quite happy with the tip. I've heard hrror stories about how people have tipped more than 30% to guide/porters/cook and they were still dis-satisfied. Uhuru peak ... read more

So I was forced out of bed by noise-making room-mates by 11. Tea and biscuits (much like glucose biscuits in India) were served. I could only take 4 of them. At 00:10, Ambrose and I started. We were the last ones to leave from our hall. It was a clear night - moon was bright, even though it wasnt a full-moon. Suky was beautiful with so many stars... I have never seen such a beautiful, starry night. Too bad I couldnt take any pics. For this climb, I just had my guide with me. Porters and cooks stayed back. Plan was to reach the crater rim around sunrise, reach the Uhuru peak around 7:30 and then come back for late breakfast at Kibo Hut and then late lunch at Horombo. First 15-20 minutes of ascent were ... read more

I woke up early for all the same reasons, and was greeted by a memorably beautiful sunrise. I also caught the glimpse of Kibo (Main crater rim) and Mawenzi peak. Mawenzi was covered with snow, which is apparently unusual. Within minutes, cloud covered them again. we started at 8:15. First 1/3rd of climb was steep. Toughest part was crossing Mawenzi Ridge. Vegetation was getting sparse. Once we crossed the ridge, almost all vegetation disppeared. For next 5 kms or so was "Saddle Zone". A barren, cold desert area between Kibo peak and Mawenzi peak. the place was relatively flat, barren and windy. Ambrose told me that I was lucky that it was cloudy. If it was sunny, wind would have been much harsher and I would have likely gotten sick. Walking wasnt easy still. It started ... read more

I am beginning to lose track of dates and days by now. Woke up early for two reasons - Wanted to see sunrise, and wanted to be the first one to use toilet. I realized I am a toilet nazi, who would sacrifice sleep for slightly cleaner environs in bathrooms :) It was cloudy, so watching a sunrise was not possible. After greeting Sue and Barbara a merry christmas, had a quick breakfast. Ambrose was on the door at 8:15, so I said goodbye to the two ladies. Sue had an extra bottle of water and gave it to me. 1.5 L of clean water was a great christmas gift, because it meant less chance of stomach problem. But it also meant carrying 1.5 Kg of extra weight too. We started in rainforest, but withing 30 ... read more

I woke up to rooster's call around 5. Soon, it was prayer time at a nearby mosque, which was followed by bell tolls from a nearby church. By 6, I was very awake, despite long travel. John and Ambrose came at 8:30, right after breakfast. I had 2 fellow climbers from Australia - Sue and Barbara. They were to climb just one day and head down on 25th. We drove to Marangu Gate (2 hr journey) but I couldnt catch a glimpse of mountain because of clouds. We drove through Moshi to Marangu. Moshi is a beautiful town, that reminded me of hill-stations in Central India. Lush green, red soil, and somewhat tropical vegetation. There were tons of gulmohar trees blooming with red flowers. They called its bloom "Christmas bloom". I was also amazed to see ... read more

Moshi & Kilimanjaro - Day 14-21 spread the money ... in different geographical parts of Tanzania As we came back from the Safari we headed directly to Moshi town which, despite it's name (Moshi means 'Smoke' in Swahili), is a clean town located near the mountain area. Moshi would be the base for our next adventure - climbing Uhuru peak at Kilimanjaro. The main reason we didn't book our climb from Arusha is mainly that I wanted to spread the money we spend in different geographical parts of Tanzania. I learned this from Uncle Tan and explained it earlier in and I absolutely believe in this way of travelling. However, as I later learned, Kilimanjaro is a serious expedition that requires not only good preparation but also the choice of a great operator. It is ... read more

What an experience! Sorry for the ridiculously long blog... I promise it gets more exciting toward the end. As mentioned previously, the four of us (myself, Doug, Sarah and Jared) had decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. We had talked about it in November of 2008, and had been training (lots of hiking!) since then. Coming into the climb, I felt like we were prepared and that we would succeed in our endeavor. Our family and friends had confidence in us and we had all our necessary gear. Day One Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa (19,341 ft) and the highest freestanding mountain in the world. It is composed of three different volcanic peaks, the highest being Uhuru Peak, which we would attempt to summit. To climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu (aka Coca Cola) ... read more

Hi all, Last weekend a few of us took a day trip out to Machame village, on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. We went with a guide who showed us all the local sights. The village is spread out, and surrounded by rainforest/bananna plantations. First of we went for a short 2hour trek into the forest, where we saw 3 waterfalls, and caves. We couldn't get to the big waterfall which you can swim in as it was the rainy season and so the path ws flooded. The village produces several local delicacies, the 2 main ones being coffee and bannana beer. Our guide took us to a local house where we were shown the coffee making process, then had ago ourselves. First job: remove the husks by mashing, then roast the coffee beans, then mash the ... read more

Monday, March 23, 2009: We left the school of preaching at 7:30 this morning. Kamarabi was our driver and he drove us to Moshi. That is about 40 miles, maybe, but it took us quite a while to get there. Around Arusha and Maji Ya Chai it's really green and tropical, but just a little ways farther it turns into what you picture Africa as-- desert. We saw a lot of homes that didn't have windows, doors, roofs. The reason is, if you have a lot of money (or any money) you are automatically obligated to give some to your relatives if they ask it of you. So many people start to build a house with their money. Then they run out and can't finish it, but they don't have money left when their family asks ... read more

Kilimanjaro - Machame Route - Day 4 - Friday 6th March I woke up on the morning of day 4 after a very good night’s sleep, much to my relief after the freezing cold night I had at Shira Caves. We were up early and the sky was very clear. We had a beautiful sight of the summit once again and so we took the opportunity to take our team photo, all seven of us! I had with me my guide, Felex, four porters (one of whom was my waiter) and Alex my cook. They were all very friendly although I saw nothing of Alex the cook as he was always buried deep in his tent, cooking! The day started slowly as we were only going to be walking for about 3 hours and were ascending ... read more
