I know there are people I have met thinking of climbing Kilmanjaro. This is the advice I can offer... Sleep. Get as much of it on the way up as possible, you’ll need it on summit day. Take lots of warm clothing. Again you’ll need it on summit day. Eat as much as possible, even if you’re not in the mood force it down if you have too. If this means taking a pile of junk food up with you, take a pile of junk food up with you. Before you finish walking for the day, walk up abit further. It will help you acclimitise. Do this no matter how bad you feel, it will help you feel better and sleep better. Loads of mental drive. Don’t loose hart. It is lots of walking. Remember that ... read more

The Kilimanjaro attempt was upon us. We were driven too Merangu Gate where the guide, Emanual, took care of the admin process, a last chance for some luxuries and off we went… DAY 1 - Merangu Gat to Madara Huts The first day was about 2-3 hours walking upto Madara (I think) Huts, Altitide 2700m and then abit further up to help us acclimatise. We ate and it was an early night for a 6.30 start the follwong day. All in all this was a relatively short days climbing. We were still in a tropical rainforest environment and while it was cold, it wasn’t freezing. DAY 2 - Madara Huts to Horombo Huts This was a medium legnth day. We set off at 8.30 am and ascended through clouds, we climbed out of the tropical rainforest ... read more

Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro seems to be part of the whole Tanzania tourist experience, something that people take on rather lightly, with the foremost consideration surrounding the trek being “how much?” But after some deliberation, climbing a mountain of 5895 meters in a few days is not your typical relaxing activity while on vacation. Add on fatigue, cold and altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness etc.) and the thought “why am I paying to make myself feel like crap?” may pass through your mind. Yet despite these factors, trekking to the roof of Africa was an incredible experience, well worth the monetary and physical expenditure. Day 1 - Machame Camp (3100m) The seven day trek up the Machame-Mweka route began on a sunny Monday morning with three rather nervous participants: *(1) A Swedish/African yodeler with a Maasai stick*(2) ... read more

Hello all!!! Hope all is well with you. Sorry for the delay (for those that are bothered?!) So after heading back to my cousins in Benalmadena, Spain after Morocco, i lived the life of luxury for a few days, eating plenty, drinking too much and having the use of things like washing machines????? I think it was a good decision though, got loads of admin bits sorted and Morocco will still be there another day!!! I flew back to Bristol on the Monday, then straight to Heathrow where i got my flight to Nairobi via J'Burg - absolutely ridiculous way to do it but its the only way my ticket worked?! I got to Nairobi at about 6pm, arranged my transfer to Marangu the next day and went to my hotel. Nairobi: Busy, heaving and contrasting ... read more
