Being the ultimate professional (dubious), when I was asked at work if I would go up Kili (via the Rongai route) since no-one else had been in the office, I thought - hey, why not? At 5895 metres, Kili is the not only the highest mountain in Africa (and one of the Seven Summits), it is also the highest freestanding mountain in the world. There's also no technical climbing involved, just good hard trekking. People climb Kili for various reasons - ie. personal challenge; raising money for charity; special milestone like a birthday or anniversary, etc. The oldest guy in our group was a 73 year old gent (who made it to the top), and he was raising funds for cancer research in memory of his wife who had passed away quite some time ago. My climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro began just after mid-night on the 5th of January, 2008. It was a frigid, moonless night and the sky was heavy with stars. Lights from the surrounding cities flickered over the African plains as if the starry sky had cast its reflection. The only other lights present were those of trekker’s head lamps snaking up the mountain like a fiery serpent. The darkness held an unnerving silence that was intermittently broken by gusts of wind or the occasional guide’s whistle. Rarely was a word spoken from the mouths of the trekkers attempting the climb. There was just too much focus; too much pain to ignore. This was the highest my body had ever gone and the hardest it had ever worked. My heart raced rapidly and with great ... read more

Ah, Kilimanjaro. Can any other mountain claim such an evocative name? Or to have inspired so many poets, paintings, and songs with bad lyrics? These are photos - no text, at this stage - of a climb my sister and I did in December 2007 via the Lemosho route. Put away the Coca Cola jokes; we hardly saw other trekkers for the first three days. And yes, we made it to the top, "pole pole". ... read more

It was before even the crack of dawn we had to be up to catch the bus to Moshi, in the Kilimanjaro district of Tanzania. Sharing a car with one of the team leaders we had a long drive to the ferry port of Dar es Salaam before heading to the bus station. The roads near our house were drenched by the heaviest rain I have ever seen. The water poured down over three days leaving small lakes on the rougher parts of the roads. ‘Puddles’ would be an understatement. The rain in Tanzania falls mainly in the bus as I discovered finding my seat soaked and the curtain next to the window dripping, while curiously all the windows were shut. Thankfully I’d brought my coat which provided a barrier. ‘It will stop when the ... read more

"Hujambo, hujambo bwana Habari gani? Nzuri sana! Wageni, mwakaribishwa Tanzania yetu, hakuna matata " translation ... "Hello, hello sir How are you? Very good! Visitors are welcome In Tanzania, no problem!" Sunny, sizzling Africa. Tanzania, land of Kilimanjaro, home to the giraffe, and one of the most welcoming cultures I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I've been here for 4 days, and I already feel so at home. And, every day has been an adventure! Even the trip here was exciting. 12 hours between 4 African airports. Landing in Dar Es Saleem, the heat immediately flushed over me as I walked down the stairs onto the dusty tarmac, sun blazing, melting my jeans to my legs. I had a 4 hour layover, so I sat in the 1 room departure gate in the waiting ... read more

Today we had the day off from volunteering for a group field trip to the Marangu waterfalls. Marangu is on Mt. Kilimanjaro but not too far up. Seventeen of us piled into the CCS van for a day of adventure. First we stopped at a local batik maker to order custom batiks. Next it was on to a volcanic rock quarry. This was unbelievable. People working in flip flops carting out volcanic rocks on their heads to be made into bricks for construction. I'll post pictures so you can see how amazing it was. Apparently the person who works inside the cave chopping the rocks makes 25 cents per rock while the people carrying and carving it make 5 cents. I don't know how these people don't screw up their necks by carrying everything on their ... read more

YIPEEH! I made it up the highest free standing mountain in the world, to the top of Uhuru Peak on Mt. Kilimanjaro to 5895m. What an experience. Here are teh pictures now! enjoy Currently, we are headed to the Serengeti, and computers are hard to come by .anyhow, the climb was probably one of the hardest things i have ever done, and one of the best experiences ever! 7 days on the mountain, camping every night, and then the push on the last day, or should i say night, since we left camp shortly after midnight to be at the top for sunrise!! From the last camp, Barafu camp at 4600m, we climbed 6.5 hours up a steep slope of a little scramble and then up a huge lava field to the top. So 1400m of ... read more

WE MADE IT! Yep, that's right, we have officially been to the highest point in Africa and it was amazing! What an experience. It started on the 11th when we were picked up from the cozy, comfortable Rivertrees at 8 am by our guide and a few other people from the company. On our way to the Machame gate we had to pick up several liters of water for our first day of hiking. After that they would be boiling stream water for us to drink. When we arrived at the Machame gate, we were really surprised to see LOTS of other climbers. We were the only ones in our group but there were at least 8 other groups there ready. Some of the groups had 2 people while others had 14! We packed our day ... read more

Hi all! We’re now back in Kilifi after our big trip. I’m going to do as Brigid did and write a separate blog for each part of our trip (and backdate them, sorry). Justin and Whitley arrived in Kenya on September 4th - David drove me down to meet them in Mombasa on the newly done up Malindi-Mombasa road. Thanks to the road works (which happened as the President was due to visit Mombasa, apparently), it now takes less than an hour (instead of over 90 minutes) to get there, and it’s a much more pleasant trip. It made for an interesting introduction to Kenyan roads for our visitors though as David - who is usually the most conservative driver in the country - was excited by their new condition and took the opportunity to put ... read more

Hi, so today is Sunday, and i have a bit of time and thought i'd give it a shot to upload some pictures. It takes quite a long time (very slow connections and slow computers) to upload a photo, but here are at least a few impressions from my stay in Tanzania so far. Enjoy! I also added a few pics to the Maasai village blog, if you are interested! Cheers everyone ... read more
