I have just finished my first week at Meru Peak Day Care center and I am thoroughly exhausted! There are roughly 60 students total ranging from 3-7 years old. I teach in the middle classroom with 30 students ages 4, 5, and 6. Thus far I have been in the classroom by myself as there is only one teacher for all three classes. Even though both of the other classes are much smaller they think that since I work in a school in the US that I can teach on my own. They do not understand that what I do at my school in the US is very different. There seems to be a common belief in Tnazania that all Americans must be better at teaching English than any teachers here. The teachers here are ... read more

Hi all Well, not going to lie, I am having a pretty bad week here in Africa! I still have no bags and it is an absolute nightmare trying to solve problems here. My friend Helen went to the airport to pick up boxes for things that her friends had sent over, for our projects, and was asked for a million shillings from the customs officers for example! Anyway, today I was told that my bag should arrive at the airport tomorrow. Wish me luck with that one! I am starting to blend in with the orphans. I just got done buying a couple of kangas (sarong type things that everyone wears here). All I need now is a major tan and to be fluent in swahili and I may look African. I am very ... read more

hey everyone, i'm still around just had a busy last few days and have been away from internet. week three at CCS was great. it was really busy. School was good although one day, when we didn't have a swahili supervisor the kids had a riot in the classroom and there was nothing we could do to control them. there was a brawl in the middle of the tiny classroom. we kept repeating" sit quiet" and "stop" and "no" in swahili but the message just wasn't getting through. we ended up just walking out and gettting assistance, they only listen when the wooden stick comes out.... funny now, a little crazy at the time. on the monday night we went to visit a place called the united african amercian community association. it is run by Pete ... read more

Humjambo- I have found myself in a new world. Since arriving on Friday I have slept little and made many new friends. The people of Tanzania are incredible. Even though they have so little, I have never experienced so much joy and genuine friendlieness. Homebase is a wonderful place and the mix of people and backgrounds makes for an interesting experience. We have spent the last several days adjusting to our new environment and meeting people in the local community. Truthfully to say it is another an understatement. I am not sure I ever really understood what living on less that $1 a day would look like until two days ago. At this point it is not something I can even put into words. The people in this community value education above all else, and many ... read more

Jambo! Just writing really quick to let you know i am still alive (just). i have been here not even 24 hours and i feel like it has been a year. not quite but so many things have hyappened. i finally got here after an extra 9 hours in nairobi airport. i actually used a sleep room there (kind of like a prison cell). thyink i really offended the lady working there by appearing before my reserved 'wake up time'. anyway, i am still wearing the same clothes as i was wearing when i left arran as my luggage is right now on its way to nairobi. all is well though! our accomodation is fine. basic but fine. there are 2 other volunteers right now - an older english couple - helen and mike. they are ... read more

A great deal has happened since I last updated my blog 4 weeks ago. I did plan on updating the blog once every week, but I am either busy with work for my placement or out gallivanting! Things at my placement have moved on from my last entry in the sense that the leaders of TUPO, together with the volunteers came up with an idea of a small farming business to generate regular income for the organisation, as well as providing the members with much needed food. (You may remember that a brick project was mentioned in my last blog entry. This idea was ruled out as it was decided that the members are too weak physically to operate the labour intensive business of brick building). The main problem for those living with HIV/AIDS here ... read more

Safari For Souls Summer Campaign 2007 Hold on ladies and gentlemen, this is going to be a little more lengthy than normal. It covers all 3 weeks of the campaign. Bare with me - it’s all good stuff!! Each year groups of visitors plan their trip to Tanzania around the Safari for Souls Campaign. It is a concentrated effort to get the word of Christ to the areas surrounding Arusha and Moshi. We have participated in the campaign in past years, but as a visitor, not a local. This was our first year to be part of it on a permanent level. And BUSY we were!!! Before the actual campaign begins there is a week of preparation. Angie and I redid all the bulletin boards at the Arusha building with the theme, “Walking in the Light”. ... read more

Overlanding Begins Up early to travel to Arusha - our first day on the truck! Yep, it's hot, dirty and dusty but we had a great view sitting near the front. There's about 17 of us on the truck, a mixture of Brits, Aussies, Kiwis, Canadians, Yanks and a Chinese girl. Everyone very friendly so we're sure to have a good laugh. Saw lots of Masaai on the way to Arusha, many had cute donkeys in tow and we spotted some wildlife from the truck, including giraffe and ostrich. The towns we travelled through were fascinating! It's hard to believe people live in such tiny tin shacks. Snake Park Arrived at Snake Park and set up the tent for the first time, which only took a few minutes. Had a wander around the Snake Park to ... read more
