WOULD YOU BELIEVE THIS? We spent Christmas day at the beach. South Africans apparently do that. In Strand large apartment buildings, tall office blocks, and low decaying vintage seaside businesses line the shore along a boulevard. On Christmas day it looked as if the United Nations had sent all their delegates to Coney Island. Only, of course, we were in South Africa. I have never seen a more amazing and multicolored collection of people. On beaches in the United States people tend to "blanket' and stay put, relatively speaking. Here in Strand the crowd moved, walked, played cricket, ran in rugby matches, dribbled soccer balls, rolled in the sand, dashed into the water, wheeled strollers, stood on their heads, surfed. It was like Brownian Motion lathered in sunscreen. I felt like I was in the middle ... read more

Merry Christmas from Cape Town. We are here until January 4, 2007, enjoying the sunshine and the wine. Has been quite warm some days especially in the interior winelands where we spend three days but usually there is a pleasant and occassionally strong ocean wind in Cape Town. ... read more

Sunday was a day of rest…I slept in and walked to town to chill out and use the internet and had lunch with Gabi and Bianca…two of the other volunteers…Aussie and Dutch. We had a great time and as it turns out, it really isn’t all that inexpensive here…I think my lunch was like USD17. Came home to read my book and passed out for a few hours…not sure why I was so tired… Then we had a braai…or BBQ in American. One of the girls in the house…I feel like I’m talking about a real world house, its silly…but anyway, she is the most unsocial person. Eats dinner essentially in silence and then disappears into her room. She’s a little bit older so you would think she would be more in tune to being friendly ... read more

We got up at 4am to leave for Kruger Park. It's definitely a Parkhouse thing that unless you get up way before dawn it isn't a holiday. We stopped for lunch at the best motorway cafe called Milly's, the one on the trout lake. On the way we must have passed at least a dozen broken down trailers on their way to Mozambique. They all seem to have a bed and half a dozen chairs lashed to the top. We got to Lower Sabie mid afternoon and set up camp, it was really hot so we then had a swim to cool down. The camp gates open at 4.30 so we rose at 3.30 to make sure we were first out of the gates. This time we weren't lucky enough to get any amazing sightings but ... read more

Happy Holidays to all of our friends and family!! Friday, December 21, 2007 Wow, it's been an amazing few weeks. So much has happened. We had a pretty crazy time looking for a new place to live. We knew that we had to move out of our Tamboerskloof apartment on the 11th of December. We started looking on the 28th of November. We rented a car, wow it was a total trip to drive on the opposite side of the road. I (Sarah) did most of the driving at Ben's request, though Ben definitely had his turn! At first it was really scary - it took me a full three minutes of waiting for the exact right moment. . .the right break in traffic. . . very . . . very long break in traffic before ... read more

Our arrival in South Africa in a town called Upington after a comfortable bus trip from Windhoek; it was a sprawling return to urban life after seeing nothing like it in Namibia outside of Windhoek. Upington is in the middle of nowhere in the Northern Cape, desert scenery was all around. We collected our hire car in the normal 'Africa time' (via a hotel casino and the airport - don't ask) and were on the road about half a day after later than expected - which ironically is just about bang on schedule! The drive was scenic and our first stop was the Augrabies Falls National Park, a stunning canyon with a large waterfall cascading over the rim. We were surprised by the volume of the falls, having seen almost no water in Namibia and the ... read more

After a long (but amazing) month in Zambia, we were definitely excited to get back to friends and our new family in Capetown. We had two full weeks in Capetown before flying to India. We spent the time with Angi, Gaz, Cardi and the gang at the Sunflower Stop, which was home for us at this point! Christmas day, we met great new friends Phil and Vicky (from the U.K. and threatening to invade America in the fall!). We also wanted to explore more of this amazing city. We rented a car and took a scenic drive to the Cape of Good Hope and hiked incredible trails along Cape Point. A long walk from Green Point to Clifton Bay Beach was one of the most scenic anyone could ask for; winding roads around plunging cliffs dotted ... read more
