Having lived in South Africa for 18 years before returning reluctantly to the UK in 2002, we go back regularly to visit our son Aaron as well as all our friends.

Our daughter Kerry emigrated this year to Australia with her husband Dave so we now visit there as well.

18 January 2011 – Ithala Game Reserve Next stop was Ithala Game Reserve. Never having been there before we had no idea what to expect, all we knew was that the campsite was 20 km from the main camp and that it was expensive at R240 a night for 2 to camp so were maybe expecting too much. The staff were pleasant enough but the roads were pretty awful, very uncomfortable to drive along and I feared for my poor little trailer bumping over the rough ground. We finally made it to the site which was lovely although extremely remote with no-one around for miles and no other soul in the campsite. Facilities were one open air cold shower with a couple of walls and one open air loo – although this did have walls AND ... read more

15 January 2011 – Hlane Game Reserve, Swaziland Arrived at Hlane game reserve early afternoon to be met by very friendly staff, a charge of R60 per person per night which is pretty good value and the choice of the whole campsite, all equipped with picnic tables, built in braais and a very large and clean ablution block. A member of staff came round to empty the dustbin and clean the braai and asked if we needed wood, when I said we did he went off and cut us some from the store free of charge. There is no electricity or drinking water but they light oil lamps in the loos at night and sell drinking water at the shop. A well stoked fire under the donkey boiler ensures piping hot water at all times. A ... read more

14 January 2011 – Crocodile Bridge Setup camp at Crocodile Bridge right on the fence, one of our favourite camps, small and usually quiet and good game viewing in the area. The first night we noticed a few scorpions running around the ground, reminded us of the last time we camped here in 2008. Woke up early for a game drive to hear the pitter patter, not of tiny feet but of big raindrops. Now there's nothing worse than packing up a wet tent so we made an executive decision to stay another day in Kruger before heading south into Swazliand which had been our plan for today. As you don't see much game in the rain we rolled over happy to have another hour or so of sleep. On waking a bit later it had ... read more

Sightings in Kruger included a herd of about 60 elephant on the way to Satara and a herd of about 200 buffalo, I know how many because I counted them as they crossed the road in front of our car one by one! The highlight really though has to be our last 2 days in Skukuza when we first saw a Leopard in a tree, we had a really clear view and there were only a few cars there, not the normal traffic jam you get when a big cat is spotted. As the leopard left the tree we drove further up the road and found 8 wild dog just lounging and playing in the road. Again, we were the first car there and only a couple joined us to watch. They stayed for half an ... read more

Fired up the red fire engine and left at 5.30am, always have to leave in the dark, and always have to take egg sandwiches as well. It's something we used to do before there were Wimpys along the way and now both kids insist they have to have egg sandwiches or its not a real holiday. The drive was uneventful – which for us is a bonus as we normally manage at least one flat tyre – apart from the potholed road and the roadworks where we had to sit and wait for the traffic to pass one lane at a time. Arrived at Sodwana mid afternoon, very hot and sunny, pretty cramped pitch considering we had 2 large tents and 2 vehicles to park and of course deciding where to pitch the tents took the ... read more

I won't bore you with all the details of shopping and preparing the trailer for our holiday. although we did manage just one or two delicious lunches – had to have my chicken livers peri peri – and possibly the best seafood I have ever had served at Ocean Basket, a platter of mussels, prawns, calamari and fish all served in their unique sauce – absolutely delicious, all for the price of a burger and chips in the UK. Or maybe I've just been away from good food for so long that it all tastes wonderful. Family started arriving on the 23rd ready for a big Christmas together. Carrie's parents came from Durban en-route to the Cape, complete with their two dogs and Wendy and Barrie and Rory and Dean flew up from Durban, fortunately with ... read more

The Long Journey to South Africa Now that we have moved to the beautiful Highlands of Scotland it is no longer a quick hour or two drive up the motorway to Heathrow, check in, and off you go. This year, apart from having to work out how to get from Fort Augustus to Heathrow, we also had to worry about the weather. Anyway, after a week of pretty bad (or good depending on whether you like or want it) weather with plenty of snow and ice and closed roads and airports the snow all suddenly disappeared to allow us to get to Glasgow. This was via the only bus on a Sunday from Fort Augustus (they've just put a bus stop outside our neighbour's house, how considerate) to Inverness then catch the bus to Perth, change ... read more

Trailer all repacked, restocked and washing nice and clean again we set off for the Yorke Peninsula. We had searched on the internet to find some good snorkelling spots and decided we would look at the campsites as we went to decide which one to stay at. The National Park has several campsites which are all bush sites. We eventually decided on Shell Beach as it was right on a lovely beach, it was one of the spots we thought we could snorkel at, there was a campsite we could fit on and the toilets - although the standard pit toilet - was at least new and very clean. After setting up camp we walked to the beach where Dave tried out the water first, of course it was very cold so we didn’t swim but ... read more

Drove to Mount Eccles National Park. The drive there was some of the best of the Great Ocean Road so we made sure we stopped at most of the view sites. The 12 apostles are rock formations that stand tall in the sea and were incredible to see. The coastline is beautiful. The weather, however, remained windy and cold. We found our campsite in the park with no trouble. This was to be our first proper bush camp and it was beautiful. There were very tall trees, individual camp sites, most with a fireplace. You have to take all of your water to these sites, none of them have drinking water and many have no water at all. We had a couple of koalas in the trees above us and we saw kangaroos hopping through the ... read more

Off to our next stop which was planned to be the Otway National Park. We stopped off at Torquay for Kerry and Dave to do some shopping as it is known as a big surfer town with lots of good shops. We were now starting our drive along the Great Ocean Road. One of the big towns along the road, Lorne, has a music festival that starts on 30th December. It was just our bad luck that we were trying to get along that stretch of the road the day before - along with everyone else. We were nose to tail in traffic for 3 hours. There are no roads off the main one so once you have joined the traffic there is no way to go but forward or back. As this is the only ... read more
