We flew from Cape Town to Nelspruit Mpumalanga and drove for two hours to Dulini Lodge in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. We have been lucky enough to have four nights in this rather special place, so instead of the usual combination of ill-informed opinion and schoolboy humour this episode will (rather gloatingly) depict the highlights of a typical day. In Sabi Sands the animals have become used to the open safari vehicles driving around. They regard them as neither a threat nor as prey, so they ignore them. This lets the vehicles drive very close to the wildest animals. Of course, if you climb out of the vehicle you could immediately become a leopard’s luncheon. Safety is taken seriously, and each ranger carries a rifle and is regularly trained in its use. So yesterday, for ... read more

Rounding up the end of our venture we finally departed Cape Town after a week of beauty and headed through Johannesburg towards White River to reach our final destination...Kruger National Park. Our hotel lay on the outskirts of this large National sanctuary in a town known as White River. Surrounding us? A whole lot of nothing. We enjoyed a late dinner of local spreads and meats and readied ourselves for the 5am wake up call to board the bus into wilderness. We were awoken before sunrise and grabbed our gear to go. For not being much of a morning ray of sun, I was smiling and truly ecstatic. I had dreamed of the day I could encounter the wild at an arm's length. As we passed nearby villages I was taken in by the locals walking ... read more

We got ourselves a guide book and like studious 6 year olds we ticked off the animals as we saw them - strangely satisfying. Kruger stretches out for miles and is similar in size to Israel. Although it is fenced this protects the animals from poachers and they are free to roam where they choose. The tracks through the park are tarmac making game viewing a nice smooth ride. Visitors are not alllowed off these tracks and a hefty fine is issued if they are stupid enough to try. At first we stopped at giraffe, zebra and impala but after a while it's close encounters with rhino, lion and elephant that really excite. We stopped by a group of baboons. They were great to watch as they chased, groomed and pushed each other about but the ... read more

After dumping our stuff in the Nsele chalet we added even more deet and headed off with Olaf for a sunset game drive to Thornybush reserve. The vehicle was a big 4 wheel drive, completely open with the windscreen flat against the bonnet. The seats were elevated to get better game view and there was a tracker perched right on the front. The sides were a bit battered and I wondered what all the dints and scrapes were from... I was about to find out. Olaf apologised in advance for the bumpy ride we were about to experience which was a little unnerving and we headed for Thornybush game reserve. Within minutes our tracker spotted the footprints of white rhino and sure enough there they were peacefully grazing on the grass a few yards from the ... read more

After a pretty monster drive along back roads and sandy tracks we were greeted at Nsele Lodge by Afrikaans Olaf and Stephanie, their friendly staff and crazy dogs. Another hidden gem of a place to stay thanks to Acacia. We each had a small thatched chalet with mosquito nets which were turned down for you and an ensuite - ahhh nice! As we were in a malaria area we were both dripping with deet and armed with numerous mosquito repelling devices - Neil swiping at any insect that came anywhere near. Nsele lodge is like a home from home. There was a big long table stretched out for shared dining, the dogs now calm were tucked up on their beds and we enjoyed pre dinner drinks round the open fire before the drum boomed that dinner ... read more

The most memorable experience was our encounter with elephants! We stopped the jeep a safe distance away from the herd who were enjoying the high green leaves from a tree. The first female and youngster passed our vehicle watching us out of the corner of their eyes -it was amazing to see these huge, magnificant mammals wandering passed so closely. The second female was not content with only walking passed - she stopped a matter of metres away and starred at us - she wasn't showing any agressive behaviours but was interested in who or what we were. She kept approaching - Neil and I mouthed OMG at each other as the guide warned us to stay still and not to move. Neil put the video camera down and we all held our breath and waited ... read more

After a short drive spotting giraffe towering above the trees along the way, we arrived at Nelspruit Cheetah project - an organisation for conservation of these speed demons and a visit which was included in our Acacia tour. We climbed aboard the elevated seats of the safari vehicle and toured the park seeing a nyalla merely hours old, wobbling on his legs that were not yet used to standing and hiding in the bush with his mother. The cheetahs have large fenced areas to roam and are encouraged into smaller pens to feed where they are locked in for a few hours to enable digestion and allow them to toilet. This keeps the large areas clean and enables the staff t clear up the waste and monitor the faeces for any mucus /blood that may signify ... read more

The eyes of hippos popped up and submeged again as we tucked into a huge cooked breakfast overlooking the glassy water. The resident cats tumbled and played rather close to the waters edge oblivious to the dangers of crocs as they rolled. Today we were off for a game cruise by 2 storey boat along the Olifants river. As the German tourists filled the remaining seats on the top deck and the Aussies started drinking (8am) we steadily chugged upstream binoculars at the ready. The hippos peered at us, their eyes just breaking the surface of the water and their huge bodies submerged. Hippos walk along the riverbed eating grasses and as we passed we saw the muddy footprints the hippo had kicked up rise to the surface rising like brown dinner plates as he walked, ... read more

The first day wiith Acacia tours - what a day it has been! We travelled out of J'burg at a chilly 5 am leaving the city in darkness and making our way up towards the olifants river. 1st stop at the services for breakfast overlooked an animal park where we got our first glimpse of rhino, ostrich and some white faced ducks - you'll never get a better view from the mens loos. Stretching our legs further along the road we stopped for a walk at the Blyde river canyon and later the three rondavels. Cueni - our guide told us the history of the area and how the river came to get its name meaning 'happy river'. We passed baboons sitting like kings on top of the rock formations looking out, as we were, at ... read more
