The South African Department of Health has issued the following information regarding the requirements for travellers from and to South Africa: 1. Tanzania: Returning travellers from South Africa to Tanzania and those from Tanzania travelling to South African will require proof of a Yellow Fever vaccination. This is unchanged from the present regulations. 2. Zambia: Returning travellers from South Africa to Zambia and travellers from Zambia to South Africa will now require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination. Previously, proof of YF vaccination was not required. 3. In-transit passengers, irrespective of the time period in-transit, will still require proof of a YF vaccination. Vaccinations must be done a minimum if 10 days before your departure date. ... read more

Tuesday 3-22 to Sunday 3-26 After saying goodbye to Trent, Allen & Amy (thanks for a great week guys; hope you feel better Allen!), a 3 hour plane delay (a scene that could have been pulled right out of an episode of 30 Rock – seriously, the pilot kept saying “just another 30 minutes” over and over again), and a 12 hour layover in Abu Dhabi (hope all is well, Angel!), we arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa. At this point, we realized we had been sitting down for nearly 48 hours straight and we were about to embark on a 21 day coast to coast drive across South Africa, where we would do nothing BUT sit in a car most of the day. My hips are tight just thinking about it. ;o) But here we go! ... read more

Barbara & John at Blyde River Canyon and Kruger Park This is the last phase of our trip lasting about a week and has been a memorable finale to an equally memorable trip. The drive from St Lucia to Graskop, close by to Blyde River Canyon, took 10 ½ hours. The first couple of hours went like a dream but the next four hours were dreadful, with road works almost non stop. After this we had lots of potholes, sometimes amusing to avoid, but when you fail they can be frightening, especially when overtaking long HGV’s. The sites of the Blyde River canyon route cover about 50 kilometres north of Graskop. Our first stop was The Pinnacle. This is a grey vertical rock monolith rising several hundred feet into the air from the river below. It ... read more

We spent three nights in a round thatched hut (rondawel) in North central part of Kruger Park. The temperature averaged around 85 deg. Here are just a few pics out of about 300 that we took in Kruger. We loved the Giraffes and Elephants the most. We spent hours driving our own car on the dirt roads looking for animals. You cannot get out of your car at anytime except at the rest camps. They are far apart. It’s fun not knowing what is around the next corner. We encountered a bull elephant in 2 separate incidents on the road right in front of us. We thought it best to give them the right of way. We also saw 2 lioness lying in the grass apparently after a meal because we could smell a really rank ... read more

We stopped in Dullstroom hoping to acquire provisions. I was looking for some good stuff for evening barbecues, better known as ‘braais’ in southern Africa. Having a petrol station directly in front of the main stores in town gives rise to a rather dense traffic situation, both regarding vehicles and their passengers. Diane went into the local butchery as I waited in the blue rocket, prompted by a milling throng of folk and wondering whether they were all totally unaware that the suitcases on the back seat contained everything needed for an enjoyable trip. She soon returned. “No way. All the meat is frozen.” What??!! How can that be true of small-town South Africa? Have things changed to a plastic cheese and frozen meat culture in just a few years? Looking around there was nothing that ... read more

We’re into the second month of 2011 and its not looking good for South Africa’s rhino population. As of yesterday, a total of twenty-one rhino’s have been poached in South Africa. The killing of 21 rhino is devastating, as its only the beginning of the year. Last year, a total of 333 rhino’s were poached in South Africa. January 2011 also saw the killing of the Cape's first white rhino !!! During January 2011, 31 people were arrested throughout the country – 16 in North West, 10 in Kruger National Park (KNP) three in Gauteng and two in Limpopo. Five suspected rhino poachers died during skirmishes with park rangers in the KNP, while two had been wounded and were hospitalized. In an effort to try and curtail poaching, SANParks announced the implementation of a new tool ... read more

14 January 2011 – Crocodile Bridge Setup camp at Crocodile Bridge right on the fence, one of our favourite camps, small and usually quiet and good game viewing in the area. The first night we noticed a few scorpions running around the ground, reminded us of the last time we camped here in 2008. Woke up early for a game drive to hear the pitter patter, not of tiny feet but of big raindrops. Now there's nothing worse than packing up a wet tent so we made an executive decision to stay another day in Kruger before heading south into Swazliand which had been our plan for today. As you don't see much game in the rain we rolled over happy to have another hour or so of sleep. On waking a bit later it had ... read more

Kruger National Park This is my first attempt to embed a video into my blog. I still am not sure that it will work. Anyway, if you copy the url in your browser, it does work. Enjoy the poor dung beetles' discomfiture. Dung beetles moving their home. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld7eG8KoOuU Did I claim that I had planned our trip very well? OK, here is the confession. There was a big mistake that I had made while planning, which would have made us too stressed out and tired to enjoy the evening game drive at Kruger. I had arranged for the travel agency to pick us up from the Johannesburg airport (after a 9-hour flight from Mumbai) and drive straightway to Kruger N.P., which is 490 kms away – not a mean distance by any standard. Moreover, there was ... read more

Sightings in Kruger included a herd of about 60 elephant on the way to Satara and a herd of about 200 buffalo, I know how many because I counted them as they crossed the road in front of our car one by one! The highlight really though has to be our last 2 days in Skukuza when we first saw a Leopard in a tree, we had a really clear view and there were only a few cars there, not the normal traffic jam you get when a big cat is spotted. As the leopard left the tree we drove further up the road and found 8 wild dog just lounging and playing in the road. Again, we were the first car there and only a couple joined us to watch. They stayed for half an ... read more

Happy New Year everyone….. but not quite ready to get to how mine went. My holidays were so jammed packed that I can’t fit it all in one blog entry so I’ll start at the beginning. After finishing work on the 17th, I got up early Saturday morning to drive to Nelspruit to meet Mike (who I met in South America last year, he is teaching in Dubai and decided to spend three weeks in Africa with me). Since I didn’t have a cell number for South Africa our plan was to meet where the greyhound would drop him off. I was running a little late trying to get a new South African cell number (a giant pain in the ass) and get food for camping. I was literally driving down the road with the lonely ... read more
