After leaving Pezulu it was just a short drive to Kruger National Park. We took a slow meandering game drive through the park towards Skukuzu – the site where we checked in for our walking safari. The awesome thing about driving through Kruger is the excitement of never knowing what you are going to see. One thing we didn’t realize is that the animals come so close to the vehicles. We didn’t expect that at all… The thing is though – they just look at the vehicles as some big nosy other animal and don’t really pay them any mind. So you really get to see some of them so close- it is awesome! We saw so many animals in Kruger that it is hard to list them all – during the game drive that ... read more

Animal time!!! Soon after we left the mountains we reached the area where Kruger and the surrounding private game reserves are located. In fact, had the visibility been better in the mountains, we could have seen Kruger from some of the lookout points we stopped at. You basically come down the mountain, pass some farmlands, and then there you are surrounded by game reserves . Before we went to Kruger we did one night at the Pezulu Tree House Game Reserve. This place was out of this world!!! Because there are no big five animals (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo) in the private game reserve that Pezulu is on – you don’t have to have fences surrounding your camp. So we were literally walking around amongst the animals. We saw giraffe, zebras, monkeys, warthogs, ... read more

Episode 2 (11.9.11) Blogged by Craig. Hello everyone. We are safe and well and having an excellent time here in South Africa. We spent the past 3 days in Johannesburg - a city with a fearsome reputation but one in which we had a great time. Ross found a brochure about a stage show called Africa Omuja. We booked and went along. It was brilliant - with singing and dancing ranging from tribal - complete with drums, spears and shields, as well as vibrant gospel that made your hair stand on end. The singing and dancing, and performances were excellent. The next day, we did a private tour of Soweto (which stands for SOuth WEstern TOwnships.) It is hard not to view such a tour as cultural vouyerism - white tourists gawking at poor black communities. ... read more

After a great night’s sleep at Africa Sky we packed up, ate breakfast, and headed out towards the mountains. The drive out of Jo’burg was fascinating as Pete (our guide) told us a great deal about the history of South Africa. He also gave us the scoop on all the things / places we were seeing during our drive. We drove by a squatter village (HUGE areas where illegal immigrants from surrounding countries build shacks out of whatever they can find and create their own little village), free houses for immigrants (one of the South African government’s ways of dealing with said immigrants – they build them free little box houses so that they can move people out of the squalor of the squatter villages), gold mines, and all different types of farms… On our way ... read more

M – There have been times on this trip when we have felt like we were either submerged in an episode of the Discovery Channel or, for those Brits reading this, sitting in the truck with Sir David Attenborough filming one of his many documentaries. The short series of photos that follows was taken from the car when a troop of Baboons blocked our path. It started when Kate happened glance down from the passenger seat and began laughing at the lack of endowment of the fellow in the first shot (see the photo to the right). The rest of the photos took less than a minute, the only missing shot was of the female offering herself to the male. My favourite of the group though is the two differing expressions on the male and female ... read more

M – The series of photos that follow are of a pride of lions moving through the bush and crossing the road in front of a growing group of tourists led by a Lioness. What was again amazing to me was how the lions give absolutely no indication at all that they know us tourists are amongst them other than to walk nonchalantly around our parked vehicles. They obviously can both see and smell us but at no time did a single lion give any acknowledgement of our presence other than a general stare in our direction. Again the silent communication between the members of the pride was fascinating as they took it in turns to move through the bush keeping a sentry posted at the front and rear during the movements. To answer the question ... read more

M – On our travels through Namibia and Botswana we met many South Africans who whenever the Kruger National Park was mentioned seemed to indicate by their general comments that the other parks were really just a build up to the Kruger and that if you hadn’t done the Kruger you hadn’t really been to a park. As such I was pretty excited about our visit even if by know we had seen a lot of animals already in Etosha, the Okavango Delta and Chobe. I was however missing the last animal in my viewing of the Big 5. The Big 5 were so named by hunters years ago for being the 5 most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. They are: Elephants, Rhino, Lions, Leopard and Buffalo. I seem to be a lucky charm re ... read more

Next morning we got up, had the free brekky, checked emails, skyped my mum and dad and then just got ready to leave. We ate the left overs of last nights dinner that we cooked for lunch then at 2pm we loaded into a tiny little car with Henri our guide and another guy from the backpackers to drive us to their camp. The drive took about an hour and a half and the camp is inside Marloth park, on the boarder with Kruger, literally. We arrived at the gate and Henry (a different younger one) was waiting in a safari vehicle with 3 people from Spain. We hopped in and went for a little safari inside Marloth alongthe fenceline with Kruger as well. We saw Giraffe, Hippo, crocs, Impala and Zebra as well as many ... read more
