Like our stay in Shumbalala private game reserve, I'm combining days for our stay in Mala Mala... Oct 14 Gary is our guide (he's 23) and there are two other couples he is hosting: a couple nearing 70 from L.A. Judy and Steve, and Kate and Brett from Australia who are in their late 20s and also on their honeymoon. On the morning drive we saw: Caribou stork, giraffe, waterbuck, white rhino, male lions, zebras, whole pride of lionesses with 7 cubs (three are 7 mos old, two are 3 mos old, two are 4 mos old), yellow billed horn bulls, and leopards. The waterbucks have big manes and a big white circle on their butts. They are prone to dehydration because of their shaggy coats, so are always near water. They have a musky smell ... read more

5:30am Morning drive, and last, at Shumbalala. We will miss our guide Ryan and tracker Herman, they really made these a great 3 days and went all out trying to make sure we saw everything possible! Saw: giraffes, elephants, warthogs, impala, red crested heron, buffalo, nyala, dung beetles, white and black rhino, termites, and found the CHEETAH!! Elephants have very little instinctive behavior, everything is learned. At about 15 years old, the males go off on their own (they are pushed out of the breeding herd because their testosterone has increased) and try to find other males to learn from. They know each other and remember dominance should they encounter each other again even if they haven't seen each other for a long time. They live to be 60-65 years old. Most of how elephants communicate ... read more

Day 6 Finally underway! With a few hours delay, we were off to Krueger. Area towards Krueger is gorgeous with steep rolling hills with huge purple flowering jacaranda trees.Bit of a disconnect as we approached Krueger, shopping centre and there in the river next to the Toys R Us and KFC store are hippos swimming! Just inside Kruger Park, our first animal sighting...a rhino! Then to the lovely campsite and setting up tents etc...all went ell, then coals on the ground and kababs for dinner...then to bed with the "whoops" of hyenas and snorting of lions near our camp nice start to our adventure!... read more

Learning about SA’s history has been one of the most stimulating and rewarding parts of my experience here so far. To be in a country which so recently achieved its freedom (from a century of apartheid rule and previous centuries of colonialism) helps me to appreciate what the Declaration of Independence meant to colonists in 1776. What follows is a run through of what I’ve heard. For one thing, if the topic comes up in conversation, the South African will ask, “Do you know about 1994 when everything changed here?” I haven’t yet discussed with anyone the personal hardships or losses they experienced in the years before that.... There’s enough in the words “everything changed here” to know that it was BIG. 1) How did the PC cover this topic? One morning long session covered SA’s ... read more

The Goat Story is the last story I have to tell that took place during PST (pre-service training). 6 out of the first 7 weeks I stayed at Lina Kgomo’s house in Watervaal, Mpumalanga. (This was the shortest training SA has done..in response to big budget cuts last year...OK, I don’t need to go into THAT any further.. You are reading to learn about South Africa,...... and what would Africa be without a goat story?) With weekend trips to museums, site visits, etc., getting a full day at my homestay was rare. So, finding time to wash clothes was difficult. Some PCT’s host families did their laundry for them, but Lina is 2 years older than me and caring for her baby granddaughter for the winter months, and there was no way I would let her ... read more

One of the toughest thing in planning travel for a family is to take them to a place when you have never been, arrange travel, hotels, restaurants and workout the last details and make it so that it wows everyone’s, meet all the expectations are met and arrange everything remotely. That is a tall order! My son wanted us to go on a African safari!! The first place that came to my mind was Kenya/Tanzania and the Serengeti. So when I told him that ok, let's go the safari in the Serengeti he said, well no, he was thinking of Singita Lebembo. I didn't even know where Singita Lebembo was let alone which country it was in. I found out that Singita Lebembo is located in the Northern part of Kruger National Park in the Lebambo ... read more
