The Youth Conference was, to say the least, awesome. Or at least I think it was…I wasn't there for very much of it. As it turns out, Linda, the Conference Coordinator, needed me to drive her all over town not just for the Wednesday and Thursday in preparation for the conference, but also for Friday through Monday, making it a round six days of driving all day around town; buying stuff, picking up stuff, picking up people, transporting goods and running like madness to try to get everything done on time. My one consolation for having missed most of the conference was that Linda missed it too. Haha, take THAT, evil Linda! The time that I had at the conference, however, was great. There were youth from Rwanda, Uganda, the DRC (Congo), Burundi, Ethiopia and Eritrea, ... read more

Hey All, Sorry for the lack of emails but Africa computers, internet access, emails, phones and snail mail are all non existent. But just wanted to touch base and let you know we are both fine happy and healthy and having a ball. I have uploaded some pics on facebook cos it is the only thing that works ok at the moment. Enjoy this latest edition of Camp K & K KENYA How do you describe a country where its people are as beautiful as its landscape? You hear the children before you can see them. They scream out “jambo” and wave with the most heartfelt and true smiles, jumping up and down. Our arms are sore from waving continuously. Not sure if anyone could ever come to Africa and not fall in love with its ... read more

"Doucement! Doucement! Il y a un trou!" "Gently! Gently! There's a hole!" Such was my trip to and from Gikongoro. Washboard dirt roads with potholes, ditches, rivulets and log bridges, all of which I had to go over at no more than 10-15 km/h. Thus did my first village trip without Chris begin. It makes me wish that he was still here because he always insisted on driving. Trust me, I didn't argue against this insistence very much. More like, not at all. But I should start at the beginning. The Days After Chris began at noon on Tuesday July 17th, when I took Chris to the airport to catch his flight home. The rest of the day, nay, the week passed rather uneventfully, mostly taken up by making budgets of the money we have left, ... read more

Finally, after much anticipation, the newly formed Nsinda ‘Blue Bloods’* (Formerly known as Nsinda Vocational School) kicked off in their first match of the new ‘Dry Season’, away to Nsinda Secondary. If you thought travelling to Old Actonians was a nightmare, you ain’t seen nothing - this was a ‘local derby’ and it still took us over an hour in two much needed 4x4s, and the pitch, best described as bush, made Old Stationers 5th team pitch look like a bowling green - a good one. We were in our red away strip, Nsinda Secondary in their customary white - When I say ‘strips’, what actually happens is all 22+ players line up and we try and mix and match the most common colours as best we can, old school style. - Today its red and ... read more

So, we returned from Gisenyi last night. I should explain that I barely made it to Gisenyi because we had bus tickets for 9am and they leave on time, on 'mzungu time' as Africans would say. So, I was planning on getting there at around 8:20, change money and head over to the bus with plenty of time. I was waiting for a taxi into town for over 30 min and then I finally had to take a moto ( like a boda boda/motorcycle that are one of the quickest and easiest ways about town) into town and I got there at 8:25 which was fine but, then I just had a nightmare experience at the bank. The woman helping me was just being completely difficult and kept liek telling me all this stuff, it was ... read more

Kigali, Rwanda I have finally made it to Rwanda, The Land of a Thousand Hills. We flew in on Friday from the Arusha-Kilimanjaro airport on a twenty seater RwandanAir Express plane, and from the window, looking out over the country I already knew I would love it here. On a quick side note: I had overheard the man in the aisle next to me mention that he was from Pasadena, so when he pulled out his maps of Tanzania and Rwanda I had to lean over and ask him where he had bought them. Surprise surprise, he had picked them up a couple weeks before at Distant Lands. We had a great laugh when I mentioned that I worked at the same store in Pasadena throughout the year. What a small world it is! Running into ... read more

So, the movie Hotel Rwanda is based on Hotel des Milles Collines ( a thousand hills because Rwanda is the land of a thousand hills). But, it is one of the swanky hotels in Kigali and has received new found success and popularity after the movie, kind of wierd, I know. But, they have free live music and karaoke by their pool on thursday nights and I think I may be attending. It is strange that this hotel is one of the most populat places in town, as a hotel and as just a hang out place (they have a pool) because of everything that has surrounded it. But, if you think about it this is one of the most hopeful places in the city because this is one of the only places where there weren't ... read more

So, I decided that I would give a little bit more information about my time in Kigali, as it is limited. WE have not done many like super interesting things this week so far because we have had some lectures and have done papers and research, etc which is interesting to me because duh, i'm studying that but, not really that interesting to hear about. Today was interesting though, we went to this organization Women for Women which is doing wonderful things for women in Rwanda, among other countries. I really believe in the empowerment of women and encouraging women in business. I think I am surrounded by such successful and intelligent women like my mom, my grandmothers and all of my aunts that it is really easy for me to see how women have the ... read more

Chris Anderson (Mr. Big Boss Man of the Anderson Association) arrived here on Saturday the 7th, around 6pm. Within twelve hours (i.e. at 6am) Chris, Faustin, Gad, Fidel, Madine, Irene (the mother of a youth who came last year, who also arrived on Saturday) and I were preparing like crazy for a trip to the boonies. Another hour or two, and we're off. We headed to Gishanda, the first village I visisted and wrote about (though I may have been mistaken as to its name...I will check the entry and edit any errors later). We took massive amounts of materials; books, videos, posters calendars cards key-chains and other gifts from Nepal (where Chris currently lives), candies, etc. etc. etc. plus stuff for eating and sleeping at the house in Muhazi on Sunday night (we took all ... read more

Well it is getting time to leave Rwanda. I first arrived in Rwanda from Burundi 2 weeks ago. In that time I’ve traveled around Rwanda and even into Congo. Now I’m in the capital, Kigali. In Rwanda I’ve been to Genocide memorials, met good friends, saw Colubus monkeys and seen some spectacular countryside. I like this country. It feels good and safe. Last night in Kigali we walked back from the restaurant in the dark… that never happens in Africa, but in Kigali it is safe. Rides from Hell Here I am sitting on the side of the road outside Nyungwe Park, looking for a ride to Cyangugu. It is about 1800 and the light is fading. I get a lift in cab of the slowest Lorrie. I’m not sure how whenever I get a lift ... read more
