Background: Almost five centuries as a Portuguese colony came to a close with independence in 1975. Large-scale emigration by whites, economic dependence on South Africa, a severe drought, and a prolonged civil war hindered the country's development. The ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) party formally abandoned Marxism in 1989, and a new constitution the following year provided for multiparty elections and a free market economy. A UN-negotiated peace agreement between FRELIMO and rebel Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) forces ended the fighting in 1992. In December 2004, Mozambique underwent a delicate transition as Joaquim CHISSANO stepped down after 18 years in office. His newly elected successor, Armando Emilio GUEBUZA, has promised to continue the sound economic policies that have encouraged foreign investment.

“One thousand meticas, your fine.” The Mozambican policeman sentences Tony for driving over a street divider in swerving from hitting two people sitting in the middle of a pothole-stricken road in pitch dark. There were no signs, no visible clue as to the street splitting into two ways. The policeman sits waiting with his tattered notebook, looking to his fellow officer on the right. Tony protests that he isn’t paying a fine for something that ridiculous. “How much you have? OK, two thousand meticas, your fine!” Tony shakes his head, We’re on holiday, we hav [View Full Entry]

Barra Beach = Beautiful Africa » Mozambique
From Mount Mulanje it was a very long drive into Mozambique; border crossings, too many potholes and hours in the car. Our first stop was Vilankulos for one night - not much to do there, walked around the town a little, used the internet and we had dinner at the restaurant. The nicest part was that we ended up having rooms of our own - a nice luxury after sleeping in tents for so long! But the really best part of Mozambique was Barra Beach in Inhambane. How to explain Barra... well, I guess the most important part is that it's [View Full Entry]

Dry spell Africa » Mozambique » Southern » Maputo
So this is the first chance I've had in a while to update things. Currently I am in Maputo, Mozambique. This is a very pleasant city, lots of tropical plants, large trees with overhanging branches, old aesthetic buildings of Portuguese infuence. Not huge and asphyxiating like Johannesburg. Of course, there is the typical African street markets, beggars, trash strewn about, etc. But I have to say, that I am becoming more accustomed to all of that. For better or worse, it doesn't seem as unusual or dramatically discouraging to see dirty, shoeless children rooting through broken glass to fi [View Full Entry]

Update Africa » Mozambique » Southern » Vilanculos
As you have probably noticed with the scarcity of my updates... internet is not very available in the heart of Africa. I've been on an overland trip through Botswana, Zambia, Malawi and am now in Mozambique. The trip has been amazing so far and apparently great things to come in the last 5 days. I've seen elephants charging, I've dodged crocs and hippos, fallen down the falls... We are only 6 in our group including our fearless leader Chris so we have formed quite a nice little family. We had Jim and Lauren a father and daughter duo from Oz. Lauren [View Full Entry]

I am in the Peace Corps. I serve in Mozambique. Or is I the other way around? Peace Corps Mozambique is the name of my program. Within Peace Corps Mozambique, there exists a powerful and wise organization called The Peer Support Network (PSN). This organization is made up of only the wisest and most powerful volunteers, a network of peers, if you will. These are volunteers who have won the right to go through intense special training that will allow them to offer assistance, guidance, and advice to their fellow volunteers during this particularly stressful time of their lives. Homesickness, pr [View Full Entry]

Mt. Namuli is the second highest mountain in Mozambique, tipping the scales at 2419 meters. It also happens to be located in my province, right outside of a town called Gurue, which lies only about 5 hours from the city I now call home. Naturally, I had to climb it. Two other volunteer friends joined me, one, a health volunteer who lives in my province, and another who is a teacher in the province directly south of Zambezia, and was on break between the 2nd and 3rd trimester terms. We all made the trek to Gurue, where we would begin our [View Full Entry]

A look Back

So I spent so much time with those other entries today that I have very little time to write this update. I am training for a marathon. The race is November 2 in Soweto South Africa. Training in Africa is harder than training in Michigan. My hair is still growing. I will include a picture of how ugly I have become. I am almost done with my original name on my Peace Corps name countdown. I will include a picture. I am happier than I was last month, and I was happier then than I was in July, and happier in [View Full Entry]

Southern Mozambique (All hostel recommendations etc are at the end of this blog) So this was our final stint in Africa and it certainly didn't disappoint. After a very brief stay in Maputo we were wedged onto a bus at 4.30 am until it was full and then they crammed on about ten more locals and we all headed in one coalesced lump for Tofu about eight hours North along the coast. Tofu Tofu has become somewhat of a diving mecca. One of our reasons for going there is that you are virtually guarenteed to see whale sharks all year round [View Full Entry]

Diving Tofo Africa » Mozambique » Southern » Tofo
After spending two days in Maputo I headed up north to Tofo to do what I went to Mozambique for, diving. The busride to Tofo was utterly uncomfortable. A small minibus takes you to Praia do Tofo in 7 or so hours, cramped in a very small space, with only two breaks during the journey. Definitely not comparable to an average long distance coach trip. But I arrived there safe and sound, so I couldn't complain. Met some cool people on the way and we hung out together along with some other people we met at the backpackers, having a general [View Full Entry]

In February, we took my car (an old Honda CVR) on an adventure. Doris and Oliver (who we met in Bolivia) joined us on the adventure. We started in Johannesburg (our home town) and drove to the Kruger Park. We spent a couple of days in the Kruger at Lukimbi and in the Sabie Sands at Idube. (These 2 lodges belong to Carl's parents). We had the most wonderful game viewing and Doris and Oliver got to see lots of amazing South African wildlife. We then headed through the Kruger Park staying overnight in Letaba, to the Mozambique border post and [View Full Entry]
