Mozambique

So again I'm a bit late in updating my whereabouts but the internet in Mozambique was weather dependent through a satellite so as soon as it got a bit windy it took a lifetime for a page to unfold. At the moment I’m back in Cape Town, SA but for the whole of July I was in Mozambique. I traveled through from Joburg to Maputo on the bus, with the mission of getting my visa on the border, the driver had already told me I had to be speedy otherwise I'd be stuck and the bus would continue. So boy was [View Full Entry]

After a couple indecisive days spent next to the Mozambican border in southern Malawi, pondering whether the 3 day ride on bad roads to get to the coast was worth it, we took the plunge. Hearing everyone rave about how amazing northern Mozambique is made it impossible not to want to see it for ourselves, especially after the glimpse we had had going through the Tete corridor between Zimbabwe and Malawi. So we set off from Mulanje, Malawi to tackle the bad roads that are as renowned as the beaches in northern Mozambique. The road wasn't horrible, but I think we [View Full Entry]

You have to try it!! Driving in Mozambique!! Its not just the potholes in the road, also the corrupt police men whom make it difficult to get around....the only good thing is that it was a rental car, wouldn't try it with our own.!! After too many hours on the road we Arrived in Tofo!! A geat diving place and with a nice beach......The first two backpackers we could't go because we got stuck in the sand.....next time we'll take a 4WD!! Dive cente is too professional, had to take a refreshing course!!! cold water in the swimming pool so I [View Full Entry]

am actually in Maputo for the evening as we move back to the Wildlife College. It was an 17 hour drive from Machipanda to Maputo driving I believe 1400 kilometers. The research turned out really well with a lot of data to interpret upon arrival home. The use of the ground penetrating radar for observing below ground biomass has not been developed very thoroughly for practical applications. The research Abi, Dintwe, a Botswanan forester, the lead investigator Kelly Kaylor and I have been working with the Noggin 1000 to attempt to take strides forward in being able to map the [View Full Entry]

It's a long road trip, so we stopped for another night at Tete in Mozambique. The roads are pretty bumpy and customs very slow..... Here's a few photo's anyway..... [View Full Entry]

We are now safe and sound back in Sydney but needed to finish off our last 2 countries! We left you in Rwanda last time we blogged. We flew Rwanda Air to Jo'burg in South Africa for a brief night's stay before we left for Maputo, Mozambique. At this point I was extremely grateful for having a dad who preaches and has friends all over the world cos we were met at the airport by 2 very friendly faces...leaders at a local church in Jo'burg who just happen to love my dad. They took us to our hotel (another Formule [View Full Entry]

The fish eagle's cry. A peregrine falcon meticulously plucking and eating his breakfast of what appears to be a wader of some description, given the length of avian legs hanging off the branch. The self-important chattering of a giant kingfisher as it takes up its perch on the dead tree near the Lake shore... but only once the falcon has vacated the premises. A bearded scrub-robin hammering the local ant population, with our vocal encouragement. A slender mongoose with his reptilian breakfast hanging out either side of his mouth. The dassies among the rocks, playing peek-a-boo [View Full Entry]

Where's the toilets then? Waited three hours at the border for our visas, so we ventured down to the local village and braved a bar that was blaring out mega loud music. It was fun trying to order because we don't speak Portugeuse and it was deafening in there. We sat on the steps outside, next to some young lads that were playing draughts made with cardboard and bottle tops. Journeyed into Mozambique until dusk and set up camp just off the road. The ground was very sandy and dotted with vicious little acacias. Had a huge camp fire and made [View Full Entry]

Leaving Mozambique

 Africa » Mozambique » Southern » Maputo
So, leaving Mozambique… Leaving the "Beek", I've remembered a few things I've forgotten to share. When S. and I went to Inhaca last week, I had gotten a letter in my room advising me to secure all valuables on my bed. I couldn't figure out what valuables as I had everything with me - phone, laptop, wallet, etc. Anyway, since the letter was signed by three people, and heavily underlined, I figured I'd better comply. So I promptly locked my passport, etc. in the safe in my room, even though I felt like that made me more of a target. But [View Full Entry]

OK, thanks for your patience. We left off at the beginning of our bus ride north to Inhambane which left 2 hours late and choked its way up the country for the next 10 hours. On the bus, we actually had the conductor come and ask us for an additional 50 Metzicales ($2) for our piece of luggage, but seeing that he didn't ask any of the locals for the money, we refused to pay, and he grumbled and left us alone. It was a pretty beaten up bus and any time there was a hill to climb, it would [View Full Entry]
