Background: Almost five centuries as a Portuguese colony came to a close with independence in 1975. Large-scale emigration by whites, economic dependence on South Africa, a severe drought, and a prolonged civil war hindered the country's development. The ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) party formally abandoned Marxism in 1989, and a new constitution the following year provided for multiparty elections and a free market economy. A UN-negotiated peace agreement between FRELIMO and rebel Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) forces ended the fighting in 1992. In December 2004, Mozambique underwent a delicate transition as Joaquim CHISSANO stepped down after 18 years in office. His newly elected successor, Armando Emilio GUEBUZA, has promised to continue the sound economic policies that have encouraged foreign investment.

Welcome to Mozambique, as usual my border shirt (the Liverpool one) did the trick by giving me something to bond with customs officers over. Football truly is a universal language. Entry to Mozambique was smooth despite a disorganised border post, the SA side is pretty well laid out, the Mozambique side, well it’s a couple of sheds and lots of people standing about. The only exits from the border post were two sand roads one heading east and one north, no signs, but asking 3 different people identified that Maputo was the main road (that’s the sand road north to you [View Full Entry]

14 day trip - Started a few days before Christmas at Port Edward on the south cost of Kwa-Zulu Natal, then followed the cost north and entered Mozambique at Kosi Bay border post and drove up to Inhambane, with a few days stop over and New Year at Xai-Xai Bay Resort on the way up and then ending at Guinjata Bay Resort. Exited Mozambique at Komatipoort border post and returned to Durban via Swaziland. Passed through four border posts without an issue or even waiting long. Generally 20 minutes per border post. Furthermore was not hassled by anyone at any of [View Full Entry]

The cancelled trip to Maputo was back on when I heard I wouldn't be going to Korea in December. So after a frustrating start to the trip when Annie locked herself in the bathroom and Roisin's dad had to break the door so we could get her out, we started the long drive to Maputo entertaining ourselves with confusing the Garmin since we knew the route better. This was mine and Annie's third time in Maputo so we knew the drill but we were lucky enough to explore the town more(The Garmin is definately worth the rands). We went on a [View Full Entry]

Day 50 Africa » Mozambique » Southern » Maputo
Day 50 Another disaster day…our second proper one of this trip. We left Swaziland at 10 and drove to the border crossing with Mozambique; it was our first bad border crossing since the one into Zambia - no proper queuing so everyone was pushing and shoving, inept officials who took ages over everything and a visa we had to buy which meant that after giving our passports in we had to wait another hour to get them back. Add to all this the fact that it was raining like nothing I’ve ever seen before, proper monsoon rain. We finally got into [View Full Entry]

Thesign for our campsite

In the morning Johannas and I toss our packs into the back of Gabriel’s pick-up, and with a few toots of the horn and a handful of merry waves, we bump along through the streets of Ilha. We’re undoubtedly a curious sight - at no point this week have I seen more than three or four other white tourists on the island - and there are plenty of barefoot kids in varying states of undress to chase our clouds of dust. At the bridge to the mainland a chapa idles near the checkpoint, four haggard faces peering from the rear. It’s [View Full Entry]

Rui is wrapped in a bedsheet and sleeping under the cashew tree when I set off for the train to Nampula. He wipes the sleep from his eyes, raises half-heartedly, offers to walk me to the station. I pat his shoulder and thank him for the offer, but tell him to go back to sleep. “Estou bêm,” I assure him. The early pre-dawn blue has begun to show in the sky, and sleepy Cuamba doubtless has few surprises between here and the train station. The askari opens the gate and wags his hand and sends me off, no doubt grateful to [View Full Entry]

I still cannot write the actually name of "My Town" because chances are that somewhere out there amongst my thousands and thousands of loyal readers there is someone so repulsed by my audacity to continuously publish a public journal about ME and MY LIFE that revealing my exact location would only put a bulls eye on my back for that someone to come here and put an end once and for all to the Fresh Prince of Mozambique. I can't allow it. The show must go on. Please be warned, if you are not related to me or even if you [View Full Entry]

Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, this would in fact be my second blog entry within the last 10 days. It must be due to that holiday magic that finds a way to touch all of us, even those of us in Mozambique. I was telling my mom that Thanksgiving is just absolutely HUGE here!! You wouldn't think it, but the streets were just overflowing with Mozambicans wearing pilgrim style hats, dressing up like turkeys, and of course bars become packed with everyone in town who has gathered around to see the Detroit Lions play football on the television. It [View Full Entry]

Why hello there! How have you been? Oh, me? I’ve been good thanks, pretty busy though. Whats that? Well yes, I believe I have lost a little weight, thank you for noticing! You actually look a little fatter to be honest. Its ok, that happens to a lot of people after high school. What? Yeah, you’re right, it has been quite a while, I apologize ….I believe the last time we talked, I had a full head of hair, my name was Jimmy Schneidewin_, I was 23, I had only run one marathon in my life, the President of the United [View Full Entry]
