9.00 Abfahrt. ... read more

How to describe Marrakech? It has none of the hard edginess of Egypt or East Africa. That is not to say there is no buzz, there definitely is but it is more of a soft vibrancy. The medina is still a crazy place, with its narrow winding streets full of shops and stalls selling everything imaginable. The leather work and metal work is particularly good and very prevalent. Its really easy to get lost in the medina but that is all part of the fun and if you walk long enough you eventually spot some place you recognise. The main square, Jemaa al Fna, is a sleepy place during the day but it goes crazy in the evening with dozens of food stalls, african dancers and snake charmers all selling their wares or plying their trade. ... read more

Wednesday, 21 March – Fes Our boutique hotel, Riad Andalib, is the bomb! It’s in the Medina but has the best location of any hotel you could hope for. You enter through a door in the wall and come into a beautiful atrium with a water fountain and plunge pool, and 10 tables under a clear roof. The intricate carving on the doors and concrete frescos is amazing! On the perimeter of the atrium are the rooms, overlooking the peaceful courtyard. Our suite has a comfy bed and massive bathroom, and the breakfast is delectable. The food just keeps on coming and the local ricotta is to die for! The Riad owner is a wonderful man, Moroccan by birth but he spent time living in Montreal before coming back to renovate the Riad. There is literally ... read more

Friday, 16 March – Ait Benhaddou Hertz gave us our diesel Peugeot 208 and whilst the weather had cleared enough to go see the Majorelle Gardens, we couldn’t find parking so we decided to forego it and make our way to the desert. Besides, we had a 4 hour drive and we didn’t know what blockers were ahead of us on the 200km stretch. Proudly, Dwayne mastered the art of driving like a mad Moroccan within a half hour! The dirt is extremely red everywhere. The rivers run red and you can see why the houses are all coloured with terracotta. In amongst all this red dirt are patches of bright green terraces where the locals harvest fields of millet. It’s quite the contrast. As we drove towards the High Atlas Mountains, the rain and fog ... read more

Day 8 & 9 8 is a sea day sailing from Barcelona to Casablanca. Booked a massage (Elke’s was good). Went for a hot tub. Only crazy Canadians will go into a hot tub in cool weather with a gale force wind blowing. Played scrabble and went for dinner to the buffet restaurant (we had never done that). Elke had Cioppino which wasn’t quite as good as the Pelican Club in New Orleans. 9 we are up early for a tour of Casablanca and the capitol Rabbat. The tour guide spoke to us only in Arabic for a good 10 minutes until some people started asking for English. Nuri the guide answered in English that this was the Arabic tour. Best part of the tour. Bus headed for the King’s Palace. I have very little internet ... read more

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” – Susan Sontag With much trepidation I board my flight for this trip. For me this time has been really hard to make the decision to leave New Zealand. New Zealand is home, its a place of relative comfort and most importantly routine and a sense of worth. The decision to put this aside for a time just gpt really tough. Although I have made this decision a number of times before I feel with age it just gets harder to disconnect. I heard a great quote the other day and it was something like:Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Think this makes sense in many aspects and in travel so much more-so but everyones comfort zone is different; whats important is stepping over ... read more

Morocco recorded a bumper year for tourist arrivals in 2017, breaking through the 11-million barrier for the first time, the tourism ministry announced Monday. Visitor arrivals numbered some 11.4 million, a 10-percent increase over 2016, with tourists from "emerging markets" such as China and Brazil joining those from France, Spain and Germany. Revenues from the sector jumped to 69.7 billion dirhams ($7.55 billion, 6.16 billion euros) in 2017, up from 64.2 billion dirhams the previous year. Fez, Tangiers and Marrakesh, along with Ouarzazate on the edge of the Sahara desert, recorded the strongest growth in tourist numbers, the ministry said. After several years of stagnation, the tourism industry has turned around, partly thanks to new budget air links with Europe and increased flights by national carrier Royal Air Maroc. Tourism is Morocco's secon... read more

Monday, 12 March – Marrakech Despite the fact that we flew business class on Iberia, which was excellent, neither of us slept any better than in economy. Usually we take Restavit to calm the senses when in cattle class, but we didn’t bother this time because we thought that lying flat would give us the sleep we usually don’t get. However, even with earplugs and eye mask, we were too aware of the aircraft noise and movements around us, and I was wishing I’d had the Restavit to dull the senses. Will get that rectified before our next flight in May. Arrived in Madrid for our 3hr layover and had showers in the lounge to freshen up, before boarding another flight to Casablanca. From there we caught a taxi to the train station, waited another hour ... read more

Last night we had our farewell dinner and started saying our goodbyes. The group has been a good mix of kind and curious people. As I had said earlier mostly young professionals , 2 lawyers , a nurse , a mechanical engineer , an environmental technician who had taught English in China for 3 years , a restaurant manager ,a teacher , a mom and her 18 year old daughter , a recent MA grad who studied international relations and a Canadian-polish couple in their late 50,s and Brenda and I. I especially enjoyed the young Austrian couple who seemed to enjoy my company as well . They tell me I am a role model for them because I still want travel and adventure as a regular part of my life . I tried to explain ... read more

From The desert to the mountains...this time it was the High Atlas . We stayed the first night in another UNESCO site . Ait.Benhaddou...a kasbah that has been lived in since the 1600's . Several hundreds of people would have lived there and farmed the flat lands that surround it . Because it is still in such good condition it has been used in many films over the last 30 years . Atlas Film Studios are located in the nearby town . "GLADIATOR" "BABEL" and "GAME of THRONES " have all bèen filmed there. The next day we ciontinued into the mountains .We actually drove through a pass that was 2300m and really cold and windy . Not all that different from home.We were headed toward a mountain village that would have involved an up hill ... read more
