Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

wall of Meknes medina
This morning we walked to the old medina (walled city) of Meknes. There were many orange trees bearing fruit along the way and we figured out the hard way why no one picked them. Meknes probably has the most number of billboards with pictures of King Mohammed IV. Due to mis-direction by a local we walked through a non-touristy part of the medina before a boy re-directed us back to the central medina. After a quick stop at the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum we got misdirected again and did a round about way to get to Place el-Hedime and the souq (market). [View Full Entry]

Hassan II Mosque
Hassan II Mosque
Casablanca Hassan II Mosque - 3rd largest in the world and one of only two in Morocco open to non-Muslims
Today began with a morning tour of the Hassan II Mosque. It’s the third largest in the world and one of two mosques in Morocco that’s open to non-Muslims. It rivals many of the large cathedrals in size and craftsmanship but I was too busy admiring the mosque so I didn’t catch much of what the guide said. It has a retractable roof but it wasn’t open at the time. We then drove to Rabat, the capital of Morocco. First stop was the Royal Palace. It looks fairly posh from the outside and I am sure it’s even more lavish inside; [View Full Entry]

Uncredible

Yes, that is an exclamation point on the end.
My last post spoke of Sevillan shit-stained sidewalks, sanitation sorrows, sodomizing Senoras (that is to say, Senoras who sodomize, not the act of sodomizing any particular Senora…Vincent…), sumptuous 90’s sing-along songs, Spanish semantics, spontaneous Scottish sprees, and supper-table shame. All alliteration aside, for some reason or another it turned out to be an excrement heavy entry. Perhaps I view the world with shit colored glasses (these days, I’m not even sure what color that would be…), but whatever the reason, I seem to be inextricably linked with [View Full Entry]

My training is almost finished so I am savoring my last week in my host site. I feel a mix between wanting to stay here and readiness to move onto my final site. My family here is wonderful, I couldn’t have asked for a better Moroccan mother and sister. They are so patient with my language and domestic skills. I have learned how to purify water, cook chicken tajine, make bread, [View Full Entry]

DAY 2 We take the train to Rabat this morning about 1 hour. The good thing is we have paid a little extra about 2-3 dollars more to travel 1st class, that only means we have a seat and don't have to stand all the way there. We took our food with us - things that we bought in the market yesterday - strawberries, raspberries and dates. We played GIN and Francine won most of the games. We ate lunch at a restaurant that had a lot of local character with very good food, we had turkey brochettes and veggie tajine. [View Full Entry]

We waited 2 hours for him to show but he never did. We missed the ship's scheduled tours, as they all departed while we waited 1 1/2 hours for no-show. We have yet to hear from him, but I am chalking it up to a miscommunication, scheduling conflict, or something similar. I refuse to believe I was ripped off. Our First Experiences in… The Western Sahara In early March, we found ourselves headed towards the Western Saharian province of Morocco. We set off from Tiznit in the early afternoon, under cloudy skies. It was one of our poorer efforts in hitchhiking in Morocco; we waited fully two hours before we found the right ride. A Casablacan couple with a rather large and luxurious suv finally picked us up, and drove us some 30 kilometres in total, 15 of which were completely out of their way. The drive took us p about 500 metres, into the foothills of the Anti [View Full Entry]

Olive & everything pocket bread
Hello everyone, My flight here was full of surprises to say the least. My flight to Chicago was fine and I sat with a person from lancaster. My flight to Rome was late and I missed my connection in Rome. So I was rerouted to Milan then on to Casablanca. A five hour delay but better than the 10 hour delay that they first suggested. A little whinning never hurt!! My flight to Rome was interesting because the lady next to me was from Albania and she spoke a little English so within 2 sentences I learned that her 29 year [View Full Entry]

We flew from Cairo to Marakech, our last stop. We stayed at the Beautiful Sofitel Hotel. We visited the Medina (old Town) and the Souk (Shopping area). The Spice Girls loved the shopping! We had a Farewell Party with costumes of places we had visited. Moroccan music with a Belly Dancer followed. She really cashed in! We headed back to Washington on 4/14 after having traveled 30,074 around the world in 23 days and landed back home in DC at 2:27pm. [View Full Entry]
