What was supposed to be an 18 hour journey from Granada, Spain to Fes, Morocco became a 45 hour journey due to sea storms and cancelled ferries. After spending the night in Algeciras, Spain, a real dump of a port town, we finally got the ferry the following afternoon to Tangier. From there, we continued on our bus to Fes, arriving at our hotel just after 1 AM. By the next day, our difficult journey was a distant memory, as we immersed ourselves in the sights, sounds and smells of exotic Morocco. We enjoyed Europe, especially France, but it's exciting to be somewhere that is really different. Let me tell you: the ¨culture shock¨ of going from San Diego to Tijuana is nothing compared to crossing from Europe to Morocco. Sure, there are internet cafes, cars, ... read more

Marrakech. Our first impression of the legendary hospitality of the Moroccan people came within ten minuets of arriving in the Souk s, Just in front of the biggest mosque in Marrakech inside the Medina walls of the old town. We stood clandestinely trying to avoid the gaze of would be muggers and con artist of whom we’d been warned of previously, and whom I’d become increasingly paranoid of since the knife point ambush in Marseille and the pink panthers appearance in Barcelona were my €100 were the object of desire. So there we were, the three of us trying to blend in, but looking completely lost. We sneakily unravelled our map and tried establish our location and more importantly the location of the hostel, this proved unfruitful and not as sneaky as we’d have like, because ... read more

On 13th Oct I took a coach from Agadir to Marrakech. It takes approximately 3 hr. Going by car is a bit tricky and I don't recommend anyone who is there first time. Specialy if you are going to Marrakech. No rules at all. The biger car the better Marrakech Beatyfull city with magic, unforgettable atmosphere where you can take a picture with a snake or monkey. You can buy there everything from crocodile leather to spices. Music is around you. People play on the pipes to hipnotize cobras. You can also hear drumming.... read more

Well, my journey home wasn't without incident, so perhaps I will recount these misadventures before concluding my Morocco journal. I showed up at the Marrakech Airport on Tuesday, September 30, at 0550 for my return flight home at 0750. Problem was, the flight was from Casablanca, not Marakech! Who booked this itinerary anyhow? I took the next flight to Casa at 1110, as the airport staff said I was too late for the 0630 flight. Upon arrival a scant 35 minutes later, I checked into the expensive Atlas Airport Hotel, so there would be no difficulties making check in the next day to try again. While dining at their fine establishment, I picked up a case of food poisoning, compounding matters. Funny how things go from bad to worse when you don't need it. I was ... read more

There are some places that one has such a clear picture of that it feels as though one has already been. In my mind, Marrakech was one of those places. I knew what it would look like; I knew what it would sound like; I knew what it would smell like. I could not have been more wrong. I had a very romantic notion of it. My guidebook describes it as having the pros of cons of both Africa and the Middle East. In my limited experience of both of those places, I have to agree. My trip did not start well. I had decided, in some moment of weakness, that I would take the early flight out of Luton -- early being 6.00 am. What this meant was that I had to be at the ... read more

My journey ends today, as I fly home to Canada tomorrow. I had an inclination to put in for another week or a month off from work! But don't worry Diane, I won't do that! It would have been nice though, to have gone to the coast with my new Slovenian pals, Oliver and Rudi, just to relax and chill out. The computer connection speed is too slow here, the keyboard too difficult to operate, and just not a lot of fun spending my time like this. I'll complete the entry when I get home. Next time I travel abroad, I'll bring my own laptop. You won't want to miss my adventures at the "Million Stars Hotel" in the Sahara Desert at Erg Chebbi, partying with the Berbers, drinking Slovenian Schnapps, listening to authenitic Berber music ... read more

Morocco I've never been to Africa or a muslim nation, and with Morocco I wouldn't be able to say that any longer. It's the same for Maria, otherwise known as Fatima from here on and I will be her Mohamed. Marrakech Arriving at the airport, the architecture, women's dress, and writing - my first impressions - give no doubt of arriving in a non-western country. In regards to arabic, it's nifty to watch an arab read right to left, then moments later read french left to right. Moroccans do this naturally and often with English, Spanish, and their native Berber as well. Later I met our camel guide, a Berber in the sand dunes near Algeria, who spoke fluent arabic, berber, french, spanish and intermediate level german, english, and then even a decent amount of ... read more

The emotions were high right from the beggining, azs the flight had some turbulence, and we were in the absolute last seats in the plane... as we arrived the pilot announces we will lake two approaches for the tower to check all is OK with our front wheel...mmmm how nice!!! Don't worry if you see fire engines and blue lights on the runway...it's standard procedure. -nervous laughs and distracting our friend... but all was really fine in the end.
