On February 3rd Dad and I flew the entire width of North Africa departing from Cairo and touching down in Casablanca, Morocco. To say that Morocco is an upgrade from Egypt would be a gross understatement. Smoothly paved highways led us from the airport into the heart of Casa and further onward to the doorstep of our hotel. From our window we could see the Atlantic Ocean and the unbelievably beautiful King Hassan II Mosque that towers over the city skyline. It’s the 3rd largest mosque in the world and given that it was in 1993, the detail and artistry of the tilework and architecture is fresh, clean, and really quite amazing. Two days later we boarded what was once famously referred to as the Marrakesh Express, the 3-hour train journey from Casablanca to our next ... read more

We had a slight sleep in today and got up at ten for breakfast. Our primary goal for today was figuring out the onward part of our journey. We knew that Essaouira was our next stop, so we walked to the bus station to get the tickets. Lonely Planet said that there were nine daily buses there with a company called CTM who charged 60dh. Just as soon as we stepped foot in the entrance of the station, a guy came over and asked where we were going. He told us his company went there for 45dh and went at a good time whilst CTM only appeared to do one a day. I agreed and we bought the tickets, but as we were leaving Rob voiced his concern that the guy had just pocketed 10dh each ... read more

Thursday 31 January 2008 Exhausted after a 5:15am wakeup in Fes to catch the 6:50am train to Marrakech, and with disturbances during the night from rowdy locals outside our hotel, we were hoping to sleep for much of the journey. Unfortunately the locals had other ideas. Once again, the local women found it fascinating to be able to hold an intelligent conversation with a man, let alone a western one, so Michael ended up nattering with the women on the train for most of the journey. It was all very pleasant and entertaining but left us even more exhausted when we arrived in Marrakech 7 hours later (photo). Very weary, we trudged out of the railway station and followed our Lonely Planet map to our hostel - well that was the plan anyway, the Lonely Planet ... read more

Shock horror, we looked out of the window this morning and the sky had clouds in it. We even had the patio heater on for our breakfast in the courtyard. There were two things we wanted to do today; I wanted to see another palace and Rob wanted to see some gardens. Because Friday is a Muslim holy day, the opening times were a bit obscure and we found ourselves in the medina with nothing to do. For ages I have wanted a perfume called Hypnotic Poison and we found a shop selling an extremely good copy for 49dh (approx 3.30) so I bought that. We had another walk around the Souqs and were amused to discover a whole street blocked off by men praying outside a mosque. They were rather solemnly praying in the middle ... read more

Breakfast was more fun than usual because we had the company of lots of little birds which enjoyed our breakfast with us. We spent a while enjoying the courtyard and watching the birds and then headed into Djemaa el-fna in the medina. We phoned Hicham and he said he would meet us upstairs in café France in the square. We both ordered Jus d'orange and sat and watched everyone going about their business and dodging hustlers etc. When Hicham arrived we chatted a while and then followed him to his workplace. We walked through more of the backstreets and there was so much to see. We must have gone through a very poor area because the smell was unbearable in some places. There was a little street market where kids were selling fruits that looked well ... read more

Breakfast was good again but slightly later than yesterday. We discussed our good intentions for the day and got as far as mapping our route. We needed a new penknife due to ours being confiscated at customs so we asked and a very nice lady translated for us and found a shop for us. We semi-successfully bought one (it is a very cheap version) and when we returned to the hotel, the lady (Vicki) was still there. We started chatting to her and we discovered that she knew Morocco very well. We sat down with our map and she filled us in on what's hot and what's not. We got to ask all the little questions that we wanted answering and she had interesting stories to go with each location. We spent so long chatting to ... read more

Breakfast was surprisingly good with a huge glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. We sat in the courtyard and ate surrounded by orange trees. Whilst we ate we consulted our guidebooks to see where we should begin our explorations. Eventually we decided to stick to our routine for the first day in a city and just wander and get lost. We walked the correct way into the medina and suffered immensely in the heat. The main avenue Mohammad 5 leads straight from our hotel into the medina. The road in was crazy and just so chaotic with little observable regulation for traffic. Roads were impossible to cross and the dust and emissions from the vehicles clouded the air. This all sounds horrific the way I write it, but it was such a culture shock with so ... read more

Everyone in our room seemed to be checking out today, so were all up fairly early. Breakfast was a bit lame and made us glad it was our last one. We then dumped our bags in the luggage room and checked out. From the hostel we went into a department store looking for a few things; toilet roll, socks and lense cleaner. All the things Morroco might not have. Although we didn't find anything of what we wanted we did manage to go to the top of the building looking for toilets; all eight floors! After not finding what we wanted we moved on to a second supermarket on La Ramblas. Here we got a little tipple before moving to a new veggie restaurant for lunch. We opted for a vegetarian restaurant from our guidebook which ... read more

As a little girl, I would sit fascinated upon my Grandad's knee as he described his adventures in the British army in Africa and India. As a poor young lad he had joined up before the war and had seen the marvels of the world before War tore them to pieces. As he would tell his stories of Tiger hunting off the back of elephants, and wandering through the sahara, I could imagine the heat of a summer afternoon, I could smell the perfume of spiced food wafting out of a kitchen window, I heard the noises of the general street traffic, and I could feel the sun peeping in the corners of my squinting eyes. Ever since I have always wanted to see these imagined places. Would the smell of cooking be as spicy-sweet? Would ... read more
