Well, I think the pics say it all. I had four nights and four days of heaven. Pure luxury. Nothing like I've ever experienced or likely to experience again. A highlight was a boat trip along the coast we did....we saw several very rare Malagasy fish eagles...one flew just a couple of meters over our heads with a shiny new fish in its talons. We also saw a Peregrine falcon. The lemurs would just come by my villa everyday. It was insane. On the first afternoon I was lying in my hammock reading and felt as though I were being watched. I turned and there was a female Coquerels Sifaka on my patio, with a baby on her back! So...back to Nairobi tomorrow and another tour of East Africa and then home. I have fallen in ... read more

Well, when I was in the middle of my last tour of Kenya/Tanzania, I wrote a very long second entry and then the internet died in the cafe I was in, so I lost it. So...here I am in Madagascar! I just finished my tour and it was amazing. What a truly beautiful country. A few of the highlights.... The screaming Indris in Andasibe waking me up at 5:50 Having three brown lemurs climbing all over me on Lemur Island (and digging their nails into my neck) Learning how to pronounce Antananarivo, Fianarantsoa, Analamanzoatra and Andrianampoinimerina Meeting Dr. Patricia Wright, of Stony Brook University, who discovered the Golden Bamboo Lemur in 1986 and help set up Ranomafana National Park and getting a tour of their fantastic research facility Swimming in Piscine Naturelle at Isalo...paradise Dancing sifakas ... read more

At last back in Europe... Although not without casualties!!!! We arrived Wednesday afternoon and Thursday I spent all day going from one hospital to another trying to find out if I had no Malaria!! Well, in the evening when I arrived in the 2nd hospital, just after seeing my GP, I realized I got covered with tons of boils in only 1/2 hour...and my temperature had risen to 39.5°!!! So they kept me in the emergencies, looking for all the possible tropical diseases: Malaria, Dengue fever, Cholera, Pest, etc... I did not have any of these, but I picked up some kind of Chickenpox! (Varicelle, Windpokken) I stayed 3 nights and 3 days in the hospital in isolation, as I was highly contagious. I received plenty of Zovirax through my veins and now I am back ... read more

Hi, I am back in Brussels now and Nadja is back in Berlin. I have fever and some strange insect bites and Nadja is S...... strange worms. I won't write anything new now and will put some pictures on-line soon. But I recovered my old "going to the east" story so here it is: Hi all, We are in Tamatave (Toamasina) now. On the previous Blog you saw plenty of pictures, and we actually have a lot more to tell about all what we did and saw: Giant cockroaches in the toilets, The pousse pousse rides in Antsirabe, The long horse back ride which broke our backs, On the Tsiribina: Crocodile, Chameleons (Nadja saw a big one eating the flies when she was shitting in an open toilet), Lemurs, Bats, Birds, lot's of vegetation (albeit very ... read more

Sat 29th Sep - Got up early to say goodbye to the guys I had been travelling with for the past 2 weeks as they are travelling off to other places. This bit is always a bit sad as, although you promise to stay in touch, the practicalities make it difficult. When I get to oz in the future I can catch up again, but that is a long time away. Leaving for Madagascar later today, so time to catch up this morning. The couple who run the Twana lodge, Arnie & Chris are really nice folks and would love to come back some day. Arnie dropped me off at the airport later. Johannesburgh International has now been renamed O.R Tambo just to confuse. I am to board Air Madagascar flight MD125. First in line at ... read more

Have finally started to get a bit more organised for Mada... just over a week before I'm due to leave :S (hey, I'm a last-minute kinda gal) Got my insurance sorted (always important), booked a flight home from Paris (also kind of useful) and went shopping for today for anti-mosquito stuff and anti-sunburn stuff. God I cannot WAIT to be able to write more interesting entries than this! Just found out our placement's been moved from Moramanga to Ambositra. Check out pictures of it here - looking good! We still get our long weekend in the rainforest in Andasibe, so I'm happy. Leaving the country in 9 days and counting....... read more

Or maybe not..... So first of all in this Blog you'll find: 1) PLENTY of photos 2) A very negative comment as I have to get it off my chest 3) a text that Nadja wrote about most of what we did till now. (I use her text as I have spent a lot of time uploading the pictures. So what's wrong????? We have been very dissapointed by the "friendliness" of the Malagasy. Madagascar is not a country to travel "independently". As long as you travel in group and pay a LOT of money, you get plenty of nice smiles. But we are trying to do it the real way and travel with the locals and local transport. Again and again they try to rip us off. Over charging by 2 or 3 times the normal ... read more
