Numero 6 Wednesday 5th December 2007 Tulear - Chez Lala 17:43 (UK) / 20:43 (Madagascar) Today has been a computer intense day; 8am until now (with Lychee breaks). Working in this heat my brain is feeling too exhausted to write much, my eyes feel slightly crossed - I hope they’re not. But anyways I thought I’d write about lychees today; I like them a lot and I’ve been thinking about them a bit- not the most commonly thought about fruit I bet, so I thought I’d give them a thought or two. I like lychees - now possibly more than grapes, apples and carrots! Anyone whom knows me knows this is really saying something. (The carrots are good here though) My favourite foods for a long time now have been trumped by this pink egg shelled ... read more

So here we are. Mango town. We have never seen so many mangoes in one place. Ever. On the trees, strewn all over the floor. Mangoes are eaten for breakfast & lunch, the after-school game was throwing mangoes at the mango tree and eating the fallen mangoes and dinner was.... Mangoes! Raay! Inevitably it stank of fermenting fruit. The local bin men were obviously on strike or something. Following the river trip, the second half of the tour was a visit to the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park in western Madagascar. The journey there was quite nice - initially driving along tracks past paddy fields, then lunch and a river ferry at Belo Tsribinha - Eric had to get out of the "ferry" and help push it across the river, much to the amusement of the ... read more

Numero cinq Tuesday 4th December 2007 Tulear - Chez Lala 15:24 (UK) / 18:24 (Madagascar) I am just writing this quickly before I go to meet Vola - BVCO’s site coordinator until last week. Despite working on the project together from the start we have never met. It will be good to finally sit down and discuss everything not over emails and phone calls. It is essential that BVCO minimises costs and carbon of course but there is only so long a project can go on before visiting is required. Hopefully we will have a good couple of days together to get to the bottom of all issues arising. Today has been a good day - learnt a lot of things today and done quite a bit, it is nice to feel productive again! The day ... read more

Numero trois Sunday 1st December 2007 Tulear - Chez Lala 13:42 (UK) / 16:42 (Madagascar) Oh my goodness it is hot. Really hot. Tulear may be only 500km south of Tana, but it is also at sea level and thus it is 10 degrees warmer - approaching 40ºC! At least there is little humidity, making this a walk in the park compared to my trip to Goa. The last two days have been slow. My brain and body are finding it hard to adapt; from being on full on the accelerator since August I have been forced to stop because everything is shut here! Don’t get me wrong you can buy a mango / sweet potato / bottle of THB at ant time of day but banks, internet places and office are open infrequently (9 - ... read more

Numero quatre Monday 3rd December 2007 Tulear - Chez Lala 16:57 (UK) / 19:57 (Madagascar) You are probably now thinking I have no one else to speak to. You’d be right. My French is getting rapidly better - but my conversational level has only yet found a ‘Can I please possibly have another roll of toilet paper?’ high, so having an interesting thought provoking conversation is difficult. I did however have a very good meeting - in a mixture of French and English with the people at ADES. ADES are BVCO’s project partners in the stove programme, and they have so far been responsible for constructing the stoves that we have created the demand for in Andavadoaka. A lot of interesting discussion indeed! Thanks to the support of the Adventure Company we will be able to ... read more

On arriving in Tana we had booked ourselves into what turned out to be an awesome hotel called Sakamanga, Malagasy for Blue Cat, with the intention of shopping around the city for a few days for a canoe trip down the Tsiribinha river. "It's never a good idea to jump at the first offer to come along" is our first travel motto. So when the taxi driver who picked us up from the airport (and also the first person we met in Madagascar) happened to mention that his cousin had a trip leaving the following day for the river we jumped. "Never pass up an opportunity for a cheap river trip" being our second travel motto. Our rough (and extremely open to change) plan was to do a fairly standard river trip down the Tsiribinha river ... read more

Numero Deux Friday 30th November 15:15 (UK) / 18:15 (Madagascar) A day of driving all over Tana centre on errands; trying to get the freight released from customs has left me feeling rather tired, smelly, and dirty. As a highly active person I have found It very frustrating being contained in one vehicle all day long. Tried to go for a bit of a walk - but have found Tana not to be the best walking location - surprising that - cars and people fill the space and shouts of ‘Mademoiselle!’ and ‘tssss, tsss’ fill the air. I have come to expect unwanted attention as a lone female where ever I travel, but it still don’t enjoy it; it has a tendency of cutting short any walking that I do. So exercise-wise I am just going ... read more

Tana Banana After freezing in London, it was quite a blast to get out of the airport in Antananarivo after 23 hours of travel time, out into 25 degrees... or so it felt! Tana. What most people seem to call this bustling city of rolling hills covered in houses and people. The ride in was a lot of green to me...green rice paddies, green trucks carrying green bananas, but not a very green country environmentally...or higienically! Bel Zebu, Bub Well done, please. It is actually the local buffalo, served everywhere, often cheaper than pork! Zebu steak, delicious! In some local places it costs actually less than a Euro, with rice and broth...the beer costs more! 6 Horses, 4 Fish, 1.5 Lobster Okay, I am a firm believer in coincidences (not!), so when these things happen, I ... read more

Numero Une Thursday 28th November 17:02 (UK) / 20:02 (Madagascar) I always swore to myself that I would never write a blog; it was too trendy, and perhaps reveals a little too much about a person, but today I have reassessed my opinion. Here commences the first of many BVCO blogs - I know the excitement is intense! It may turn out to be a rather boring tale, but I hope it will give some insight into the workings of a small not for profit carbon offsetting organisation, along with an insight into Blue Ventures as a whole, the location in which BV works, my own personal travels and experiences as a vegan abroad. So today I start this blog malarkey at the beginning of an exciting phase for myself and for Blue Ventures Carbon Offset. ... read more

Heading Getting ready and already dealing with fotoana gasy (Malagasy time) Now that our trip is officially one month away, Jessica, Wendy and I are trying to book our plane tickets to Diego- so we either pay 50 dollars on top of the tourist price to get them sent to the US, or we very kindly ask Wendy to get the peace corps travel agent to book them for us and hope that the dollar becomes stronger in the next 2 weeks. I think we are doing the latter. ... read more
