Last blog, I was leaving for Africa and the World Cup giving footballs and smiles.... Many moons later, Africa is a whole lifetime away... That trip is chronicled in another place...footballsmiles.wordpress Now it is another journey and project that is making me smile, all the while cherishing the old that remains active in my life. This time it is with the added pleasure of roots and fantasy, food and music in paradise! Let me share a little vision with you and introduce you to... Nagai On the island of Ibiza, where I grew up, I have found a where to do what and with who...coming full circle from when I set out on this adventure nearly four years ago. Are you ready? This is where everything I have learnt in my life gets put to the ... read more
Fifa, Family and Friends I had the Cup in my hands! A dream, a childhood fantasy, fulfilled for a fleeting flight of floating fancy! No disappointed emotional reactions... no regrets of unfulfilled expectations, no suffering... just curiosity. Hmmm! I must be getting somewhere! Oh, well! What did we expect way back when, would we expect it today? Would we want it now? What do we expect now for later? Will we want it then? Are there any expectations for right now? Is that even possible? I was expecting to leave for Ethiopia via London last Thursday, thanks to Iceland, I had to re-direct, re-think, re-plan... at least I have learned not to re-expect! So now, the metamorphosis of a small venture into a full-blown organisation with a re-arrangement of itinerary, dates and composition. We are now ... read more
Plop! Oh, no! What was that? What was that thud? What just landed on my bed in the middle of the night? Should I just not move and see if it goes away? Was I dreaming? Hey! It moved, I felt something and heard it too! Ok, have to reach out from under the covers and turn the light on... Click. Nothing. Plop! Plop! Yes! There it is! Phew! Not a snake falling on my bed after all! A frog, trapped in the lampshade! After dismantling the shade and throwing the slimy, bug-eyed creature out of the window into the tropical garden, I tried to get back to sleep. Mission impossible. The neighborhood dogs have decided to have a loud and obnoxious noise-fest and the mad-men have decided to join in too... just another peaceful ... read more
On the road...again! She ducked and dodged, watchful, eyes alert, dark black. Studying, waiting, learning... Then, the light changed, the look was another. She knew. She was ready. Uh oh, time to get out of here! Too late. She weaved like a cobra, hypnotic She was coiled and poised to strike One, two, three, you were hit by a tree! Full speed, different angles, no chance! She is small, she is light, she is clear-faced and bright-eyed, fast and furious, sweet and shy. She is Sonia, from a small fishing village called Chapora, Goa. She is the World Boxing Champion. All this happens nightly in the simple gym, simple work, not simple results...Go Tigers! As I nurse my bruises, I relive the past year, a year of intense activity, no real time or inspiration to continue ... read more
Celebrate! Every day we can celebrate something... we all have the privilege of choosing what we see! Today I choose to celebrate! And I want to do it with you! With a huge smile and a twinkle in my eye! Here is what I see: I see that the world is going faster, there are all kinds of things to get worked up about and frustrated. Things like all the eco's (economy, ecology, ecorruption, ecommerce, ecoetc...). I see all kinds of global thises and thats... and a lot of concerned email spam! I see myself forgetting who I am... if I ever knew! I see that it is time to slow down and play with the children, especially the one within. I see a lot of email activism and am curious as to what that really ... read more
Today is wonderful... Always! Just returned from an adventure in Cordoba, Argentina, ten days of unexpected surprises. Funny how life is one huge adventure that we walk into backwards, semi blindfolded, looking for clues in front of us, all the while continuing to move into the unknown, ah! Love it! Means nobody really knows anything! Now, how's that for a liberating thought? Well, let me see, I think some people know some things, especially universal truths and technical things, just not what the future holds, unless they have some way of seeing without their eyes... Back to today, right now: Right now is wonderful because all is perfect, my body feels great, my mind is concentrated on the task at hand, writing this, instead of asking unanswerable why's and what if's, my soul is enjoying ... read more
Now What? So, here I am stranded in South America... Stranded from the German Strand, which means Beach... which I love! Well, I could just wander the amazon, or make necklaces to sell on the beach, or set up a facial reflexology corner, or work in a bar, maybe even teach English, work as a receptionist in a hotel or make American pancakes (the fluffy ones!) at the square... Or head out to a monastery or Candomble' center and get some spiritual advancement. Hmmm.... Nothing quite convinced me, I still wanted to keep smiling at the beach! I think it might be difficult to smile if you have no food or place to sleep or income. Nah, I know more ways to keep traveling and smiling, even if it means to miss the beach for a ... read more
Of Endings, and of new Beginnings! So, with a note of tristesse, I must officially inform that my round-the-world ticket has just expired... On November 22nd, exactly a year had passed since I had gotten on the plane at Heathrow, on my way to Antananarivo. This last leg was from Salvador de Bahia, Brasil, back to London, effectively closing the loop. End of trip. Basta. Finito. For a nostalgic recap, I re-read my posts, looked at the photos, saw the amount of wonderful people I met, the exciting and thrilling 'alive' moments from Madagascar to South Africa alone, yet, always in good company. Of India with all of its idiosyncratic paradoxes and family fun... Of Thailand with the quality of life, the harmony and good cheer... Of suffering Cambodia and the children who are creating ... read more
We had last seen each other a cold January night in New Delhi... Jordi and Vanessa went to the Andaman Islands, while Alberto and I headed the opposite way to Goa and onwards. They returned to Ibiza to work the Summer season. Now, here we were reunited at the other end of the World, another bustling city, cold and rainy too! Sao Paulo, Brazil, Jordi waiting at the airport, we stranded in Bolivia, thanks to a canceled flight, the only bad connection in a year! Luckily, Fernanda, a Japanese Brazilian angel we met in Peru willingly flew to pick him up with her mother!!!! Imagine his surprise, waiting to see his two best buddies from childhood, instead getting a call on the loudspeaker and being met by a beautiful Brazilian of distinct Asian features and her ... read more
