has been a pretty crazy 2 weeks. not got much time so it will have to be in brief. returned to the forest and was back to my same old routine. then at the end of the day on tuesday i got a lift back from the forest by one of the ourist cars. got chatting to them and they offered me a free ride upto the Tsingy in the north. So packed bags organised things and i was off in the morning. took the whole day of driving to get there including two very interesting ferry trips. by ferrys i mean a woodent raft on top of 3 canoes. which the cars drive onto very two pieces of railway track that are only just wider than the wheel. so that was an experience. the scenery ... read more

i am back from another 2 week stint in the forest. first few nights were alittle restless as i acquired a room mate. a madagascan rat with a big bushy tail. kept me up all night cos i was trying to work out what he was nibbling away on. had vesions of him eating through daves rucksack straps, which i dont think would please him too much and would make getting my stuff home a little more complicated!i got a trap to catch him the next night, which i soon did. but this was no normal animal, when i tried to frighten it off from my platform, any normal animal would run away, but this guy decided to run straight at me. and when i let him out of the trap in the morning he hoped ... read more

So... This time in one month I will be on a plane bound for Madagascar. Actually, if we're being pedantic, this time in one month I will probably be asleep in my hotel room in Paris as the flight isn't till 4:30pm, but let's not get picky! For those that don't know (and as I have yet to inform any of my friends of this website, that's currently 100% of you!) I'm off to Madagascar in October for 2 months to volunteer with the Dodwell Trust I'll be living in Moramanga (land of the cheap mangos!) and teaching English to schoolchildren, something I've never done before so should be interesting! Anyone who's lived/volunteered in Madagascar, or knows anything about the area or just the country in general, your comments would be much appreciated!!! Lianne x... read more

hmmmm. So... 25 days before I go. Or something approaching that. It was my last day at work today. which felt very weird. After 10 years and 2 months, it was somewhat of an anti-climax. Mind you, I'll actually be popping in for a couple more days before I go so it didn't really feel finally final. Today's list was quite short - swim, take my homeopathic remedy, have my hepatitis and rabies jabs (2nd of three), go to work, finish everything (!), deliver press training, leave work. I didn't actually have any madagascar admin to do at all... so I was looking forward to a nice, relaxing slump on the sofa when I got in from work. However, when I got home, I found the washing up still in the sink. From two days ago ... read more

Well, 26 days until I leave. Feeling relatively calm still about the job and about upping sticks and moving to another country (that I've never been to before) for a year. Feeling less calm about everything in between now and leaving though! I have lists coming out of my ears. But it's the best way to get organised and what doesn't get ticked off before I go, just won't get ticked off.... Anyway, I'm trying to work out how easy it is to actually post on this blog as, chances are, it won't actually be me that's doing the physical posting being as we won't have any internet access on site. hopefully, I'll be able to send someone some sort of text files so that they can copy and paste and do it for me...... I ... read more

since i last wrote on here i have spent 2 weeks in the forest. living on rice 3 times a day and using the 'toilet' (a hole in the ground), sleeping in a tent and being woken by scurryings outsiode and there was even some hoping the other night. god knows what that was. a giant frog maybe! but everything runs away from me before i can get out of my tent to find out what it is. my days consist of a 30 min walk into the forest which is 60km from the nearest town already. 15 mins of that 30mins involves a trek through the forest, with fallen leaves to climb over and lots of cobwebs to walk through. one of which had a massive scary spider in it the other day. but the ... read more

hey everyone. hope everyone is well. confused where i am upto with telling you things, but we had a good night in the forest with the malagasy guys teching us how to dance and showing us there music. then wer taught them how to play cards. its really cool how much of a laugh you can have even with language barriers. after this night we came back to town again yesterday and had a day of wandering round the town which is very interesting. then we signed up for the marathon which i did this morning! i did 5km mostly running be it very slowly. but seeing as i had to do it in jeans as i still dont have my luggage i think i did alright. it was really beautiful route, with the baobo trees ... read more

hey everyone so after i updated you yesterday we headed off to the forest. my luagge is due to arrive on saturday so i borrowed a tent and a sleeping bag. so we set off in the 4 by 4 (which is diffinately needed!) along a dirt track, beautiful red sand but with lots of pot holes. it took us 2 hours to get to the camp but xas amazing getting there and i dont think i will get tired off that trip even if i do doze off from time to time. the scenery is amazng with forest on either side then suddenly a few shacks of people with their coats and zebu. all washing theie clothes in the rivers or walking down the street carrying everythin on their heads. i even saw one woman ... read more

No, we are not in Madagascar but when I tried to enter Reunion Island travelblog did not recognize it and therefore I had to go with the next closest place. The fact that a well used travelblog site doesn't know about Reunion says a lot about how far away we are from everything! Imagine a small volcanic island in the middle of the Indian Ocean not far from the Tropic of Capricorn with a circumference of 200 km. On this island there are over 200 microclimates created by the various elevations that make up this tropical paradise. In only one hour you can go from the sandy beach up to La Fournaise which is an active volcano that erupted for the last time in April of this year. (This eruption actually cut the bottom of ... read more
