Champagne?...yes please Moved through the boarding gate and got handed our Club world ticket. From hear on things got pretty ridiculous. Sitting in our seat which reclined down to be as flat as a bed, probably the most comfortable plane journey possible. Soon as we sat down we were offered champagne and obviously were inclined to take this and then two more double southern comforts and lemonade. Coffee came with cake, champagne came in a glass, and dinner came in three courses. This was most pleasing, but we both were pretty miffed we weren't in first class. Apparently their TV's are bigger....piss take. We landed and queued for about an hour for the visa. Got picked up by a cab who's boot obviously didn't open, so we squeezed in with out luggage and were taken on ... read more

Okay, so I've been home for several days now, but the blog is unfinished and has been weighing heavily on my mind (well, a little bit). There's really not much to say, but here goes. Wednesday was a pretty easy day. I just re-read it and it's only a couple paragraphs, but we didn't really do anything spectacular, so I'm just going to leave it. Thursday - our final day in Africa. After being able to sleep in again, somewhat (we're in the middle of the city and the hotel is under renovations, so it's pretty noisy in the mornings), I made sure everything was packed and then we all moved our stuff into Todd and Heather's room for the rest of the day. That way we could check out of our other rooms, yet still ... read more

We arrived safely in Nairobi this morning... definitely jet lagged but the excitement over powered our sleepy eyes. We were immediately greeted by our new friend Peter from the safari company we booked with. He was incredibly kind and gave us a tour of Nairobi as we sat in the early morning city traffic. When Jake asked Peter what his favorite kind of music was he proceeded to tell us about his love for country music! He even pulled out a cassette of his favorite country artist... Kenny Rogers (whom we listened to for the duration of our drive today)! After a warm welcome at the Savuka guesthouse (we are literally staying in the tour company owners home!), we headed out to the Nairobi National Museum. It was the perfect first stop in Nairobi as we ... read more

As the bus pulled closer to Nairobi I started to get nervous - a victim of the hype about 'Nairobbery', and not helped by the fact that we were due to arrive in an area 'rife with petty theft' according to the guide book. As we entered the city we passed mile upon mile of red roofed shacks, and then moved into the city where the dirt and rubbish built up and at times became the road itself. Hardly an inspiring entry. The bus pulled to a stop in the chaotic, crowded, and manic eastern side of the center, and as we stepped into the city it felt like we were walking into a maelstrom - there wasn't an inch of space on the pavement, the roads weren't much clearer either, and as traders, shoppers and ... read more

Monday – more safari. Our morning game drive was a wake-up call to everyone else. We had neglected to tell everyone how cold it is in the morning as you’re driving across the park, it wasn’t on purpose, but Heather and I had to learn the hard way, so I wasn’t necessarily generous with my info. So most of them weren’t too impressed with the drive. A lot more antelope, zebras, elephants. We saw a hippo crossing the plain from its night spot in the bush back to the river for the day and several hyenas wandering around, looking suspicious and up to no good. The impala kill and leopards were nowhere to be seen. But then we came across a huge troop of baboons (Kristina’s not really a fan of monkeys and apes anymore) and ... read more

The “project” portion of our trip is over, so now all we have to do is relax and have even more fun right? That was the plan for Saturday, but, well, you all know how plans are in Africa. We’d said goodbye to most of the clowns already, and Jane was next to leave, back to the UK, on Saturday morning. The rest of us, the 6 Edmontonians, Meryl, Elisabeth and Sue, headed off to explore Nairobi. Heather still wasn’t feeling very well, stomach cramps and diarrhea, but she wasn’t about to miss out on the day, so she rallied and we were off. First stop was the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust aka Elephant Orphanage. We got there a little early so had to wait in the sun. The babies were cute as always, but they don’t ... read more

Jambo!! I am sure you have heard this version of “hello” from our previous travellers yet I have never had the chance to say it and, since I am experiencing the free life right night, I will do as I please J I have been put in charge of the blog for this trip to Kenya with the instructions to tell you absolutely anything that has happened this that day. So, yes, our flights were great. Not a lot of sleep, blah, blah, blah... Yesterday, we were able to take it easy and did a few touristy things such as the Sarit Centre mall for some last minute supplies and also the Giraffe Reserve. We were able to feed the giraffes small pellets although they are not an animal that ”cares for friendships”, as the ... read more

Hello Hello, I am not going to apologize for the delay in posting because if I set that precedent, every posting will have to start with an apology. I have a couple days to catch up on but I will do my best. Just so you know the players in this saga, I am travelling with a non-profit group that I am involved in, One Child’s Village that was started by my Uncle Todd. If you want more info, check out www.onechildsvillage.org. So this trip is with my Uncle Todd, my cousin Whitney, and fellow volunteers Heather, Kristina and Kamal (later to be known by his last name Chetty). Our first bump in the road was at the Edmonton Airport – yep, we didn’t get very far. We’re blaming Kristina, as every flight she’s had that’s ... read more
