Sorry if the spelling/grammar is horrible. No time to review right now Will add photos soon!!!! January 2, 2012. Just the second day into what has been advertised to be the most important year in human history, thanks to the Mayans. What better way to celebrate the end of the world than by heading off to Kenya? A place that I have little to no chance of visiting in the future once I leave college and study abroad trips are no longer an option for me. Sure, its hard to leave your loved ones behind, even sadder when they drop you off at the airport and wish you the best of luck, but honestly, how do you have a life altering experience when you refuse to leave the comfort of your home? The familiar atmosphere in ... read more

We hope you have a very Happy Christmas and we wish you all the very best for 2012! We enjoyed a week at the beach before Christmas, with some friends. It was lovely being at Tiwi Beach again, by far my favourite Kenyan beach so far. Although the scorpions and other creepy crawlies tried to ruin our holiday. I really am a beach person, and loved watching the kids enjoying the beach and watching their swimming progress. Charlotte is now trying to swim unaided and is not worried about water splashing on her face (big improvement there), and Hayley is swimming with arm bands by herself. It is probably not where their swimming should be, but we find Nairobi too cold to swim, so this week at the coast was some precious swim time. We had ... read more

Wir treffen uns ca. 30min ... read more

What an amazing first week... ...After a lot of last minute stress and a long flight into Nairobi, we arrived safe and sound (not being mugged en route) at Effie and Celia's apartment. They swiftly took us to experience some close encounters with a selection of African wildlife, treating us with a trip to Langata Giraffe Centre and the Mamba (crocodile in Swahili) Village. After a day in Nairobi sorting ourselves out with money and getting our bearings, we were off on our way to the Masai Mara. It was a 5-6 hour journey on what felt like some of Africa's bumpiest roads. After a few pit stops we arrived at our campsite for a late lunch, and then a late afternoon/early evening game drive. Over the next two days we met loads of the characters ... read more

Africa time – no hurry in Africa. It is quite strange that people don’t care about time, no plans and living in the moment, and not tomorrow. If a Kenyan says to you that they will meet you in the afternoon then you can wait a period between 2-6pm. It is rarely a Kenyan will use the actual time and they use the terms like morning, afternoon, evening etc. But Kenyan business people know the strict time in the Western world and suddenly the Kenyan do follow the actually time. Actually, sometimes it is hard to understand how a business runs in Africa.. well we mean the business meetings, but how strange it sounds but it works really well. We experienced this a few times that few minutes can take hours. You can forget the strict ... read more

Today is our last day in Africa. We enjoyed a quiet morning by the pool and then headed to Nairobi by was of the giraffe rescue center. The center is dedicated to insuring the existence of the Rothschild’s Giraffe that is facing extinction due to loss of habitat and the casualty of warfare. One Mom was ready to give birth but she was friendly and let us feed her and pet her. Some folks held a piece of giraffe “candy” in their teeth and so “kissed the giraffe”. Not me though. After a wonderful time of giraffe petting we headed to the Karen Blixen house. She wrote “Out of Africa” and it was interesting seeing where she actually lived with the Baron and entertained Fitch-Haden. Our final African adventure was dinner at the Carnivore Restaurant. Next morning we had organized a taxi to take us to Mombasa to the bus stop. We got there almost an hour early, much better than being late though. Finally we got on our bus and it was the aircon version, very comfy, but it took a while for the aircon to cool the bus down sufficiently. We stopped halfway at the same place as on the way to Mombasa and had some empanadas (they call them meat pies) then oiled on again and left for Nairobi. We arrived at about 7.30 at the bus stop, and had called ahead to a taxi driver who gave us his card, but he sent his mate who waited for us since 6pm when the bus was supposed to arrive! We felt bad so paid extra even though he ... read more

I have now been back at St Dorcas for a week. Last week was the first week of school break so they where all revising, getting ready for their exams in a couple of weeks time. They spend the first part of the day revising and then after lunch their time is free. This has meant that I have had time to get to know some of the kids a lot better, especially the older kids. It has been great talking to the older kids and finding out a bit more about them. One of them is an 18 year old boy called Samuel. He was living in the Kibera slums during 2007 when the troubles from the elections started. Because he was from the Kikuyu tribe he was beaten and driven out of his home ... read more
