Lembrei da frase “Happines only real when shared”.

* Começou a diarreia. Fiquei ruim por 4 dias. Em 1 ano de viagem só tive diarreia uma vez e foi em Madrid (comi paeja em um restaurante!!!) =( * Ônibus que demoraram mais tempo que o normal para chegar ao destino final. Cheguei ... read more

We apologize for the lack of inspiration in the upcoming words and I fear that our Ethiopian experience has suffered for our want to be home. Our inspiration has also suffered from seeing how the animals are treated in the rural areas of this large and densely populated country. This often unnecessarily harsh treatment of life, has my empathetic heart hastily retreating for safety. The people certainly don't have it easy, but sometimes we saw the animals bear the often brutal brunt of the frustration and helplessness the people here must be feeling. Our 4 day trek through Simien Mountain National Park was also disappointing on a few fronts. As our trek started, it became painfully obvious, for both the people trying to eke a living and the natural environment/wildlife, that despite being a critically endangered ... read more

Like on cue, tears shamelessly trickled down as the vehicle carrying me and my colleagues left my house for the airport. "Sorry, I'm crying," shyly wiping away the tears that clouded my eyes. "I'd be concerned if you did not," said my fellow volunteer who came down for a visit. If that was a movie, I swear I would be up for nomination for best actress. Hands down. As we cruised by the patches of green and brown fields, I could not help but reminisce the day when I first got the taste of life in Ethiopia. "Chocolate crepes!" I felt my heart beat faster with delight after seeing the brown piles of rolled-up thin cake-like dish on the table among the spread on the table. I had to give in. One, two. Wait, one more. ... read more

When we camped at Samburu recently there was a squatter toilet a short walk from our campsite through the bushes. Murray likes to camp in Maasi Mara which we normally have to dig our own toilet. I really hate squatter toilets of the long drop version, the walk up to the toilet from the campsite is normally one of me looking around for snakes or baboons or you know, a lion or a leopard. Then when I’m there doing my thing trying to balance and keep the door shut, I’m wondering if a snake or a scorpion will bite me while I’m doing my thing. Murray normally hears a LOT about the state of the toilets and often obliges and pays a lot of money for a drink at a fancy hotel where I conveniently use ... read more

I don't know what it is about Ethiopia, but I am completely taken by it. Maybe it is the uniqueness of the culture—their own unique cuisine, their own music styles, their own dancing, their own language only spoken in that country. Going to Ethiopia reminds me of the first couple of times I went to Nepal. I just wanted to take it all in and could not get enough. It is strange and exciting and always full of adventure. This past week I was in Addis Ababa leading a qualitative research training for a maternal and child nutrition project. This is not actually my study, but I was filling in for a colleague who could not get to Addis quickly to lead the training herself. So I said since I was in the region anyway and ... read more

So here it is merry Christmas everybody's having fun......except that isn't quite true as due to the Ethiopian calendar it's 16/04/2005 and Christmas isn't for another 13 days. As a result we are volunteering in school for the whole of this week which, in fairness, it out of choice and better than festering in hotel lamenting the loss of turkey and associated trimmings with absolutely nothing going on in the town. We will have been at the school for a month by the end of the week and it's been a great experience which has allowed us to understand Ethiopia a little better as well as meet some very funny children and recover from the two months on the road. We are ready to roll now though and have our sights firmly set on the Kenyan ... read more

Here's a blast from the past in your inbox, eh? Another blog entry from Al and Sara! Three years have passed and as promised we have returned to Ethiopia to see our friends and introduce Sahai (T'sehaye) to the country where she spent 6 months bouncing aorund in Sara's tummy and the country that gave her her name. Flying out to Ethiopia on the Thursday 22nd November overnighter, we landed in Addis very early in the morning for us (not Ethiopians, who had probably been up several hours running, praying or both!). After a curious mexican stand off where we sat in the shai bet (coffee shop) in the airport waiting for Debebe and Zikargechew and Debebe and Zikargechew sat in the car park waiting for us, I finally borrowed the mobile phone of a cleaner ... read more

And the blog returns...... So we have now completed the 'northern circuit' which took us up to the border with Eritrea in the north and then returned us to Addis Ababa. The trip took about 20 days and around 80 hours of that was on the bus covering the 2300kms. It was a great trip, highlights included endless, stunning views across the mountains of the central ethiopian highlands (including perilous dirt roads with 500+ metre drops inches from the side of the bus). The chilled town on Bahir Dar on the edge of lake Tana. The castles of Gondor - castles in Africa is pretty unsual. The stelae of Axum (big tall pillar things built by the Axumites) see the pic for what they look like. The unbelievable rock hewn churches of Lalibela where they decided to ... read more
